So what IS the diff between multimedia and transmedia? Is it just a new term for the same thing?  This question was posed recently within LinkedIn's Transmedia Producers group and I'd like to stoke the discussion fire by encouraging all of us to look back at Henry Jenkins' 2009 transmedia course at USC and its motherlode of transmedia history, cutting edge projects and future looks.   Luckily most of the links still work and live on through Jenkins' blog  at

If we can accept that "transmedia" is both a term and a communications methodology, that it is still in its infancy, and that it  is likely to morph, expand, and contract repeatedly, we can move past mere discussions of terminology and get on to the really interesting issues of just what and how  we can use multiple platforms of communication to tell more compelling stories.

If anyone still wants to poll whether or not transmedia is just marketing, I'd have to vote "no" simply on the basis of the term's origination. Whether or not it will evolve into "just marketing" is the more appropriate question.

At EpiCintre, we have innovated radically new systems and methods for creating transmedia content and in the process, we were forced to create an entire dictionary of terms that we could all refer to in order to stay on the same page (given how the industry typically mis- uses or mis-applies nomenclature on the subject). For example, the "EpiCintre Media and Technology Dictionary" boils transmedia down to a basic root concept: "Transmedia: The use of two or more media platforms for the same, similar or like-threaded content deployments, regardless content purposing." This simple definition allows for story, advertising or marketing content, etc. to fit in, depending on the intended purpose deployed. "Transmedia Storytelling then becomes self-explanatory. While many of the definitions used in EpiCintre dictionary are long established by others, we have been forced to create, perhaps, over 100 new words to accurately describe the new concepts, procedures, inventions, outputs and things that are involved with our proprietary project---some of these concepts may one day become common place but right now they are front line, radically redefining alien concepts for an evolving industry that is clearly not yet defined or even 5% developed towards its potential. EpiCintre is pioneering the new paradigm so that Hollywood, New York, Silicon Valley and US artists and workers can reap the rewards. In my opinion, we are about to enter the Second Golden Age of Hollywood---it's a very exciting time to be in the transmedia industries!
