How to spot greenwashing and actually travel sustainably

How to spot greenwashing and actually travel sustainably | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
Interest in sustainable travel has been high for the last few years, and the airlines, tour companies, destinations, and accommodations that serve these eco-conscious explorers seem to understand this. But while businesses tout the steps they’ve taken to mitigate climate impacts, it can be hard to decipher whether they’re taking sustainability seriously or simply greenwashing their meager efforts in a bid to secure the almighty tourist dollar.

Five sustainable hotels that prioritize the planet.

Five sustainable hotels that prioritize the planet. | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
Travel is undoubtedly rebounding, with US airline ticket sales back to pre-pandemic levels, according to recent analysis. And with pandemic restrictions being eased, travelers are packing their bags and taking to the skies to satisfy a long-suppressed sense of wanderlust.

But the pandemic has done more than just intensify the urge to travel, it has made us considerably more aware of the impact of our travel. According to Booking.com’s 2021 sustainable travel report, 61% of travelers said that the pandemic has made them want to travel more sustainably, and a further 81% intend to stay in sustainable accommodations at least once in the upcoming year. However, it is clear that barriers still remain, with 49% believing there simply aren’t enough sustainable options available to them.

Many hotels still largely depend on fossil fuels for their energy, and according to a recent green lodging trends report, a mere 21% have on-site renewable energy. These energy-intensive systems, used for things like heating water for showers and spas, and keeping guests’ rooms at comfortable temperatures create carbon emissions. These emissions, particularly at large resorts with an abundance of amenities add up, contributing to the roughly 8% of greenhouse gas emissions that estimates attribute to Global tourism.

Are online travel companies moving too slowly on sustainability? | PhocusWire | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
In what might be considered a watershed moment in the industry's understanding of how important climate change is to its future, Jeremy Sampson, CEO of The Travel Foundation, indicated at The Phocuswright Conference in November 2021 just how far the sector needed to move away from its current practices.

He had, some might argue, a pretty radical idea that could be put in place immediately and would have a huge impact on the sustainability efforts of the brands that do it.

In short: stop the crazy use of billions of dollars on marketing and do something valuable with the money instead.

Delegates and fellow panelists knew exactly which brands that he was singling out: online travel companies such as Expedia Group and Booking Holdings, a duo that collectively and regularly spend north of $10 billion in a pre-pandemic year on digital marketing with platforms such as Google Adwords.

Tours and Activities Go From Hardest Hit to In Hot Demand This Year: New Survey

Tours and Activities Go From Hardest Hit to In Hot Demand This Year: New Survey | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
New research suggests that tours, activities, and attractions will be one of the brightest spots in the travel industry’s recovery. Consumers say that price is the last thing they’re worried about when shopping for travel experiences this year — in a sharp switch from the past.

Travelers intend to spend 31 percent more than usual on attraction tickets this year and up to nearly double as much as what they’ve spent on walking tours in the past, according to data discussed at the ITB Berlin travel trade fair on Tuesday.

“It’s really clear that travelers want a lot more out of their experience in 2022, and they’re willing to pay for it,” said Douglas Quinby, founder and CEO of Arival, which surveyed 1,000 U.S. travelers.

Chinese tourists 2.0 – Coming anytime soon? | Phnom Penh Post

Chinese tourists 2.0 – Coming anytime soon? | Phnom Penh Post | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
Regional tourism is grappling with the absence of the prolific travellers and big spenders – the Chinese tourists. Cambodia, which has welcomed over two million Chinese tourists before Covid-19, is reeling from the economic loss despite being the first to fully open last November

‘To put it simply, tourism in Southeast Asia will not see a full recovery until Chinese travellers come back,” said Hannah Pearson, a Southeast Asia travel and tourism industry analyst.

Truth be told, it is not just Southeast Asian tourism but the world in general, given the fact that it is the largest tourism source market since 2012.

But the protracted travel restrictions relating to its zero-Covid policy, multiple pre-and-post departure tests and quarantine imposed on inbound travellers (which eased slightly this week) have discouraged its citizens from venturing abroad.

In the last year, the number of consumers expressing interest in traveling more sustainably is up 10%, but many also say they don’t know how to find sustainable accommodations or only review a property’s sustainability efforts if the information is easily accessible.

The data comes from a survey commissioned by Booking.com in February of more than 30,000 people from 32 countries and territories who had traveled at least once in the past 12 months and who plan to travel in 2022. Details are published in the brand's Sustainable Travel Report 2022.

The Rise of the “Corporate Nomad”

The Rise of the “Corporate Nomad” | Innovation and trends in tourism | Scoop.it
The rise of the corporate nomad will be inexorable in the wake of the pandemic. These are individuals who, while maintaining a full-time employment relationship with their organizations, will increasingly participate part-time in geographically dispersed initiatives and projects within their employer’s global network. The benefits are many.  It gives individuals a sense of financial stability while also allowing them be exposed to new people, new geographies, new cultures, new values, and new work projects without having to leave their current organization. Fostering this type of global exposure and contribution will also become an increasingly important and effective way for organizations to retain and develop top talent. It can provide individuals and corporations alike with an extraordinary chance to reap the benefits of job enrichment and change, without requiring individuals to jump into the wrong place with the wrong fit, and without creating a situation where organizations must replace great employees who should never have been lost in the first place.

European Tourism 2021 – Trends & Prospects (Q4/2021)

In 2021, strong vaccination coverage in Europe, the EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate and the easing of travel restrictions which allowed the release of large-pent up demand, set the grounds for tourism revival. However, the emergence of the Omicron variant at the year-end weighed on this recovery and brought back mobility restrictions due to record-breaking infection rates.

Year-to-date data informs estimates of a 62% decrease in tourist arrivals to Europe in 2021 over 2019 levels. The outlook, however, remains positive, with travel demand projected to be just 20% below pre-pandemic levels in 2022, fuelled by domestic and intra-European travel demand. Domestic travel is expected to exceed pre-pandemic peaks in 2022, while international travel will not do so until 2024.

"The traveler is then given a carbon budget for the year, and once it is consumed, then no more travel is allowed.
