Summary:

 This study examines path directions for 6,194 tornadoes that occurred in the eastern two-thirds of the United States during the twenty-three-year period 1980–2002. At the national scale, almost 70 percent of tornadoes in the study went from the west, west-southwest, and southwest, with west-southwest being the highest frequency origin direction.

Summary:

This was a very interesting article that gives the history of tornado warning systems, dating back to 1948. It goes through the years giving the advancements made. It started from T.V. network and radio warnings to today with warnings being delivered to specific locations, using GPS and other location technology, through cellular telephones, outdoor sirens, e-mails, and digital television.

Summary: In this article it discusses how we are advancing by predicting and estimating the damage that will be done by a incoming tornado. This is being done by using polarimetric radar data. This can tell the severity of the tornado as well.

Summary: In this Discovery Magazine article they explore these large gas tornadoes on the sun. Described by astrophysicist, Wedemeyer-Bohm, tornadoes reflect local changes in the sun's magnetic field and estimating that there are over 10,000 of them at any time. He also discusses that by moving energy upward, they may give reason for the difference in temperature between the sun's surface and its upper atmosphere.

Summary: In May 1998, atmospheric conditions across southeastern South Dakota led to the development of organized moist convection including several supercells.This supercell remained isolated for an hour and a half before being overtaken by a developing squall line. During this time period the supercell produced at least one strong and one violent tornado

Summary: In this Time magazine article was about the tornado that hit Moore Oklahoma in May, 2013. It goes into the how and why it formed and what the radar looked like that day. Most of this article is about the warning going off at 16 minutes before the tornado hit. They have stories from different individuals from Moore, telling their stories about what they did in those 16 minutes to prepare themselves. They also discuss the repercussions and damage done by the tornado. Lastly, it talks about the tornado that took place in Joplin, MO and how they only/most important difference was that Moore had an advanced warning system.

Summary: This article from Discovery Magazine was about how predicting tornadoes was very difficult. It features a story about the tornado that went through Greensburg kansas in May 2007. It also touches on the nature of tornadoes and how hard they were to study with the equipment they had. What I would like to get from this article is an example of how things used to be and how far we have come since this tragety.

Summary: This article from Discovery Magazine discussed advances in weather modification techniques. A solar power satellite that can prevent tornado formation. Also, in this article it says that lightning kills 62 Americans a year. Scientist have invented a rocket that triggers lightning, making it strike only where they want it to. This will eliminate those deaths.
