Theory Of Constraints + Lean in Manufacturing - Conference by Philip Marris, Vilnius Lithuania 2013

Conference: “How to quickly become a much better manufacturer than your competitors?” in Vilnius, Lithuania on 30th of April 2013. This was part of the Supply Chain Conference organized by TOC Sprendimai and Verslo Zinios. Part 1 is a brief presentation of the concepts of the Theory of Constraints and Part 2 presents two case studies. The first case is an automotive OEM supplier in Mexico. It involves injecting Theory Of Constraints (TOC) into a very Lean system to very rapidly improve the factory’s performance. The second is a luxury perfume bottle manufacturer in France that rapidly boosted its performance by using a combination of TOC, Lean and Six Sigma. It is probably one of the first full implementations of “TLS” (TOC + Lean + Six Sigma). The presentation (in English) is by Philip Marris.

[...] I flew up to Seattle for a rare on-camera interview with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for CNBC. [...] The guy's got plenty to be happy about. Amazon stock has been on a tear this year, up about 22%, which makes Bezos's 19% stake in the company worth about $5 billion more than it was in December. (Probably better than your portfolio.) [...] But my favorite detail from the Bezos interview? This summer he spent time at Lab126, a Silicon Valley outpost about a mile from Apple headquarters where Amazon engineers hash out hardware designs. And he also hosted three all-day book clubs with Amazon's top executives, capped by nice dinners at the end. Bezos said he used the books as frameworks for sketching out the future of the company.

Companies all over the world try their best to improve their business by implementing efforts such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or a combination of the two methodologies. Logic would tell you that these two methods would be the right approach because you would have an improvement method that, through Lean, reduces waste and make value flow, while Six Sigma reduces and controls variation. If this were true, then why is it that many of these initiatives simply aren’t delivering quantifiable bottom-line results?

After having studied many of these on-going improvement efforts, the author believes that these efforts are missing an important focusing mechanism. That is, most of these improvement efforts attempt to improve "everything" rather than finding that key part of the system that should be assessed and improved, the constraining factor, and then focusing the improvement efforts there and only there.

The hallmark of this book is how to first locate this constraining factor and then determine the best way to exploit it to generate extreme profits, radically improve on-time delivery of products or services and increase market share by outperforming your competition at rates you never expected possible. How do we do this? By combining Lean and Six Sigma with the Theory of Constraints. This book demonstrates both the basics of improvement (i.e. results) with the "how to" (i.e. the methodology) in a very simple format that everyone within your organization will understand.
