There are a number of unhealthy ways to cope with pressure and anxiety, but "stress eating" sweets, crisps and -- or turning to alcohol and energy drinks -- might just take the proverbial cake. Paradoxically, when dealing with stress, the body frequently craves precisely the foods that will exacerbate the condition most.


"When they're stressed, people go naturally to the wrong foods because they increase levels of [the stress hormone] cortisol," Heather Bauer, R.D., founder of, told the Huffington Post. "People tend to crave foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt because those directly increase our cortisol levels."


But before you head to the local shop for a quick fix for your stressful work day, read below to see what foods you should avoid when under pressure. 


Energy Drinks- Full of caffeine and sugar, energy drinks and caffeinated colas are some of the worst foods for stress, e combination of both the caffeine jitters and the sugar crash, that can be taxing on your body, Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D., author of author of The Flexitarian Diet.


Spicy Foods- if you're experiencing stress-related digestive troubles, steer clear of spicy foods that might aggravate the discomfort. People who get stressed easily are not able to process food as well, Bauer explains. "[Stress] slows down metabolism and makes it harder to digest food, so food sits in stomach for longer. This leads to things like acid reflux, and spicy food then could make that worse."

Sweets and Biscuits- people often turn to treats when they're stressed, but sugar only contributes to higher levels of stress hormones. "We go naturally to the wrong foods because they increase levels of cortisol," Bauer says. The blood sugar and insulin spikes that accompany the consumption of refined sugar can also lead to crashes, irritability and increased food cravings.


Alcohol- a glass of wine can calm you down, right? Wrong. Alcohol stimulates the release of cortisol, according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The study found that heavy drinkers and those who had recently increased their drinking had higher levels of the stress hormone.
Alcohol and stress "feed" each other, according to University of Chicago research published in 2011 in the journal Alcholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.  People may turn to alcohol to dampen the emotional effects of stress, but it turns out that stress actually reduces the intoxicating effects of alcohol, according to the research.

Coffee Drinks-sweet coffee drinks -- like vanilla lattes and mochas, which are made with sugary syrups and espresso -- can also increase stress levels. "A lot of people, if they're feeling panicked at 3pm with all the work they have left to do, make matters way worse by going to coffee shops and getting a sugary coffee drink, which makes them highly agitated, even more so than they were," Blatner says.

Processed Foods- high in sodium, fat and artificial additives (not to mention that they add little-to-no nutritional value), the processed foods we turn to for a little comfort can actually increase stress levels. "The foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt are the foods that directly increase our cortisol levels," Bauer says. "That's what we crave when we are stressed, as a result."

Chips- the high carb and fat content of chips may provide a quick energy fix, but will only lead to a crash later on. Aside from the obvious hypertension risk of eating lots of high-sodium foods, chips are also a common culprit for stress-eating -- which is never good, in the long run.
"Whether it's french fries, potato chips or Doritos, anything that's high in salt would be considered a mindless munching sort of food," she says Chewing Gum and Sugar Free SweetsAccording to Blatner, chewing gun and eating artificially sweetened candies could exacerbate stress-related digestive issues, which can in turn lead to irritability. 

"[Foods that cause bloating] may not make you stressed out but it makes you feel uncomfortable, and being uncomfortable makes you stressed out," Blatner explains. "It makes you feel more irritated." So next time you are feeling a little stressed remember the not so helpful cravings for "sweet" "caffiene" drinks or foods, they will only get you craving more and aren't so good for health or the waistline. Instead rely on the natural wholesome benefits of water to hydrate and clear your mind.


If looking for a snack Food@One recommends a handful of unsalted macadamia nuts, or activated almonds, walnuts and pumpkin seeds (see activated nuts article). Or why not try dehydrated buckwheat discs, oatcakes, hummus & carrots, an apple. Apparently chewing raw carrots helps reduce stress as its the noise in your head and the munching that helps calm one down. Give it a go. Plus one more thing, whatever needs to be completed at work, or dealt with, tell yourself you can do it!

Egged on by massive food-industry marketing budgets, Americans eat a lot of sugary foods. We know the habit is quite probably wrecking our bodies, triggering high rates of overweight and diabetes. Is it also wrecking our brains?


That's the disturbing conclusion emerging in a body of research linking Alzheimer's disease to insulin resistance—which is in turn linked to excess sweetener consumption.


There's also research tying brain dysfunction directly to excess sugar consumption. In a 2012 study, UCLA scientists fed rats a heavy ration of fructose (which makes up roughly half of both table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup) and noted both insulin resistance and impaired brain function within six weeks.

'No added sugar' drinks doesn't make them sugarfree!

With water there are no unsafe limits, so no matter now much you have, it only does you good. Whether it is sourced from a mountain spring, an alpine lake, glacier or the municipal water supply, as long as it is filtered and free of impurities, it’s without doubt the healthiest hydrating option.


Adding anything to water complicates things almost at once. Sugar adds calories and makes blood glucose spike, salt makes blood pressure rise, caffeine dehydrates, artificial sweeteners make bones brittle, green tea often has pesticide, and the list of unspeakable things artificial colours and flavouring do is growing longer each day. 



Low-sugar or sugar-free is an option, but not a healthy one. Researchers at Tufts University, studying several thousand men and women, found that women who drank three or more colas a day had almost 4% lower bone mineral density in the hip, even though researchers controlled for calcium and vitamin D intake. In the Tufts study, both caffeinated and non-caffeinated colas were associated with lower bone density.

The trouble is that even people who stick to diet colas make concessions for juice, especially if it is freshly-squeezed and has no sugar added. But the benefits are overstated. Juices are essentially water and sugar with flavour.


Though ‘no sugar added’ sounds good, it does not mean that it will have a low sugar content. Fruits have natural sugars called fructose, which do little harm when had as part of a whole fruit (See Wholesome Apple article) as the fibre in the fruit slows down fructose absorption. When you have fruit juice minus the pulp, this is where the danger occurs as your sugar levels rise. Part of the problem is that the calories in juice are so concentrated. Just half a glass (100 ml) apple juice has 60 calories, the same as a whole apple, but without the fibre that makes fruit filling.


Sugar — whether natural or refined — is sugar, and sweet drinks of any kind must be avoided. Apart from weight gain and it’s associated disorders, there are other risks. Women who choose plain water over sweetened tea, fizzy drinks or fruit juice, have a lower risk of developing diabetes, reported the Harvard School of Public Health after tracking 82,902 women over 12 years.Each glass (200 ml) of sugar-sweetened drinks and fruit juice had in a day raise risk by about 10%. But if plain water was used to replace one cup of fizzy drink or fruit juice, diabetes risk fell by 7-8%.


Sweetened drinks hit children the hardest. Most children are super active till they are about 10 after which activity shifts from playgrounds to gaming consoles, tablets and PCs, making their fondness for sweetened drinks lead to problems ranging from bulging bellies and hypertension and brittle bones and tooth decay.


What is needed to replace fluid loss and satisfy thirst is the beverage we’ve been drinking for generations, and that’s water.


Do not underestimate the benefits of water, got a headache have a sip of water before you search for pain relief in tablet form. Feeling tired or in need or energy rehydrate with water. Feeling hungry but have just eaten your food (see the article on Water the Ideal Option) sip that water.




When you have the choice next time and your looking for that healthy soft drink remember this: a) is this in its most natural form? b) How much manufacturing has gone into this? c) if there is no added sugar what is making it sweet? d) Are you ok with drinking something synthetically made?

A team of entomologists from the University of Illinois has found a possible link between the practice of feeding commercial honeybees high-fructose corn syrup and the collapse of honeybee colonies around the world.


Since approximately 2006, groups that manage commercial honeybee colonies have been reporting what has become known as colony collapse disorder—whole colonies of bees simply died, of no apparent cause. As time has passed, the disorder has been reported at sites all across the world, even as scientists have been racing to find the cause, and a possible cure. To date, most evidence has implicated pesticides used to kill other insects such as mites. In this new effort, the researchers have found evidence to suggest the real culprit might be high-fructose corn syrup, which beekeepers have been feeding bees as their natural staple, honey, has been taken away from them.

Commercial honeybee enterprises began feeding bees high-fructose corn syrup back in the 70's after research was conducted that indicated that doing so was safe. Since that time, new pesticides have been developed and put into use and over time it appears the bees' immunity response to such compounds may have become compromised.


The researchers aren't suggesting that high-fructose corn syrup is itself toxic to bees, instead, they say their findings indicate that by eating the replacement food instead of honey, the bees are not being exposed to other chemicals that help the bees fight off toxins, such as those found in pesticides.


Specifically, they found that when bees are exposed to the enzyme p-coumaric, their immune system appears stronger—it turns on detoxification genes. P-coumaric is found in pollen walls, not nectar, and makes its way into honey inadvertently via sticking to the legs of bees as they visit flowers. Similarly, the team discovered other compounds found in poplar sap that appear to do much the same thing. It all together adds up to a diet that helps bees fight off toxins, the researchers report. Taking away the honey to sell it, and feeding the bees high-fructose corn syrup instead, they claim, compromises their immune systems, making them more vulnerable to the toxins that are meant to kill other bugs.

Dried fruits are dehydrated, not cooked, so they're often found in raw food diets. They usually have more calories and natural sugars per serving because the dehydration process removes so much of the water. This reduces the volume considerably compared to the fresh form, so there are more pieces of dried fruit in the same size serving.For example, according to the United States Department of Agriculture's National Nutrient Database, one cup of grapes has about 104 calories, and a cup of raisins has over 434 calories. This doesn't happen because the raisin company added sugar, it happens because the raisins take up a lot less space than the fully hydrated fresh grapes. If you look at the calorie content of grapes verses raisins by pieces of fruit, then the database shows ten grapes have 34 calories and ten raisins have 16 calories.


When you look at the nutrient facts label on a package of dried fruit, you'll probably see the amount of sugar that's contained in the fruit. This probably isn't added sugars in the form sucrose (table sugar) or high fructose corn syrup, unless it's specifically listed as an added ingredient.


The sugars found in dried fruit are mostly fructose and dextrose, the same sugars that are naturally found in the fresh fruit. However, some dried fruits, like cranberries, are too tart for most people to want to eat them as a snack, so sugar or fruit juices are added to them when they're dried. Make sure to read both the nutrient facts labels and the ingredients list before you buy the dried fruits. The ingredient list on the package will tell you whether the sugar in the dried fruit is added sugar or natural sugar.


When eating dried fruit be mindful of portion sizes as too much fructose from the fruit can be stored as fat via the liver. I would opt for no more than a handful once a day. Also consider the processes that dried fruit goes through, surely by removal of water would remove some vital waterbased vitamins that you can obtain from fruit in its wholesome natural state.

Foods being marketed to children in UK supermarkets are less healthy than those marketed to the general population according to researchers at the University of Hertfordshire, who question whether more guidelines may be needed in regulating food...


With the rise in childhood obesity across Europe, there has been much attention on how governments can reduce the advertising of products with high fat, sugar and/or salt levels, directly to children. Much of the focus has been on snack foods like confectionery and soft drinks. However, this study found that foods marketed to children that are often considered to be 'healthy' foods, such as yoghurts, cereal bars and ready meals, were still found to be higher in fat, sugar and salt than those marketed to the general population.


Dr Kirsten Rennie, from the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Lifespan and Chronic Illness Research, said: "Consumers may think that foods marketed for children, using cartoon characters and promoted for lunchboxes might be healthier options than the equivalent foods marketed more for adults. In fact we found that it was the opposite. Foods like yoghurts and cereal bars often had substantially more fat and sugar per 100g than similar adult-version products. This is very worrying and does not help consumers' confidence in choosing appropriate healthy foods for their children."


Nutritional data was collected on yoghurts, cereal bars and ready meals from seven major UK supermarkets and categorised as children's or non-children's products based on the characteristic, promotional nature or information on the product packaging. Fat, sugar and salt content was compared per 100g and per recommended portion size.


Dr Angela Madden, Principal Lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Hertfordshire, said: "This study was co-ordinated by one of our students, Amy Lythgoe, who graduated with a BSc (Hons) Dietetics in 2011. Amy and the research team have provided some useful new evidence which will help parents become aware that choosing foods that are marketed to children may not be the healthiest option. This is an opportunity for food manufacturers to look at their child-orientated products and think about how they can improve them."


The research paper "Marketing foods to children: A comparison of nutrient content between children's and non-children's products" is published in Public Health Nutrition Journal.
