Film legend Errol Morris said the separation of thousands of migrant children from their parents by Donald Trump's US administration was "inhumane and cruel" as his new documentary about the policy premiered at the Venice Film Festival Thursday.

Shakira wrote a personal essay about the 545 children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Trump administration has been using major hotel chains to detain children and families taken into custody at the border, creating a largely unregulated shadow system of detention and swift expulsions without the safeguards that are intended to protect the most vulnerable migrants.

One of the dehumanizing administration policies Miller advanced was the “zero-tolerance” policy, a policy which caused a surge in the number of children and parents being separated from one another when caught crossing into the U.S. via the U.S.-Mexico border.  

According to The Washington Post, despite public outrage over the policy, “Miller defended the separations and had encouraged the president to enact them – telling others in the West Wing they would prove to be a migration deterrent.” Due to the immense blowback of the policy, President Trump ended its practice but as of August 2019, but Miller continued to defend it. 

Despite President Trump’s executive order ending the policy, the administration has continued to utilize covert practices to continue separating families at the U.S. border, as SPLC recently reported.

600 unaccompanied minors were deported by the Trump administration in April under a Stephen Miller-led order exploiting the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Associated Press reports, a surge from the at least 299 who were deported toward the end of March. Some of the kids that have been quickly deported in blatant violation of U.S. law meant to protect migrant children have been as young as 10, the report said.

President Donald Trump has been pushing to reinstate broader family separation policies and sought to close the US-Mexico border at El Paso, Texas, as his conflict with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen reached a boiling point.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is declining to provide witnesses for a House hearing next week on the administration’s treatment of migrant children at the border.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly 1,000 migrant children separated at the U.S.-Mexico border by the administration of former President Donald Trump have yet to be reunited with their parents despite a two-year effort by President Joe Biden. 

Multiple media outlets reported this week that the federal government remains unable to find the parents of more than 500 children.

About two-thirds of the 1,000-plus parents separated from their kids under a 2017 pilot program were deported before a federal judge ordered that they be found.

Opinion: You may not care about deported asylum seekers, even kids, but Trump will eventually come after you if you let him disregard U.S. laws.

In the month of February, 2019 the Justice Department revealed that the federal government has received more than 4,500 complaints in the past four years concerning the sexual abuse of immigrant children. These children were being held at government-funded detention facilities.
