Five academics at the Centre for Research on Employment and Work (Crew) at the University of Greenwich analysed data about the retail workforce during and after the Covid pandemic, and carried out in-depth interviews with 30 workers.

 

They found that the pandemic “intensified existing trends” in online shopping, which meant a renewed shift from traditional shop-floor jobs towards work in warehouses, away from direct contact with customers.

  • Making yourself irreplaceable can tether you to your job and compromise your wellbeing. Additionally, it reduces potential for growth. If no one else can handle your job, you won’t be able to step up into new opportunities as they arise.
  • There are important implications for your success as a leader. When you position yourself as a gatekeeper or go-to person, it’s easy to become a know-it-all and limit your effectiveness. You can deem yourself so vital that you become diminishing — someone who is smart and capable, but who shuts down the intelligence and capabilities of the people who you lead.
  • Instead, look to becoming valuable. The most valuable contributors pay attention to what’s important and do the job that needs to be done — right now. Your value at work will grow if you replicate yourself rather than protect your scarce skills.

Your college degree might not matter quite as much in your 2023 job search as it used to.

That’s a good thing, says Emily Rose McRae, an HR-focused senior director of research at analyst firm Gartner. In a report this week, Gartner predicted that the most successful companies this year will be the ones “more comfortable assessing candidates solely on their ability to perform in the role, rather than their credentials and prior experience.”

Esta podría ser una razón de peso para tomar la decisión de no entrar a la Universidad a estudiar una carrera profesional de 4 o 5 años. Lo que no dice Gartner es que a un empleado sin estudios universitarios se les pagará menos que a los que sí los tienen.  Es por eso que muchos jóvenes ingresarán a programas educativos alternativos en los que se obtienen micro-credenciales.  El tiempo me ha dado la razón, a pesar del rechazo a los planteamientos expuestos.

  • Flexwork is here to stay – especially in location. More than four out of five businesses have some form of location flexibility in their work, whether it’s fully or partially remote, or a hybrid working environment.
  • Partial remote is booming. Fully remote operations are on the downswing from the early days of the pandemic (52.4% of businesses now, 62.6% two years ago) – and partial remote has nearly doubled since then (59.2% now, 32.3% two years ago).
  • Remote isn’t as sustainable as people initially thought it was. Two years ago, one third of businesses said 75% of their workers could work fully remotely without disruption – only half that number think so now (17.5%).
  • For those working remote-first, comm tech is a huge unifier. Three quarters of businesses say they’re using communications technology now compared with 52.6% in 2020.
  • Employee monitoring is on the rise. Right now, 22.5% of businesses are using time-tracking and / or employee monitoring tools – up from 14.6% two years ago.
  • But there’s one benefit of remote: larger talent markets. 53.3% of businesses are now expanding their job postings to other locations compared with just 30.1% in 2020.

The world has undergone massive challenges in the past 12 months. War in Ukraine, energy price spikes, higher borrowing rates, and chronic inflation are all impacting consumer confidence
domestically and internationally. As a result, the  U.S. will likely enter a recession soon, if the  country hasn’t already. The impact on businesses, employers, and employees will be dramatic.

 

The employment industry has felt like a roller coaster in recent years, with twists and turns caused by COVID-19, the post-pandemic boom, and even the ‘Great Resignation.’ With unprecedented shifts, how are workers reacting? Employees are demanding greater flexibility in where, when, and how they work, and salary still remains top-of-mind for workers. However, managers are grasping the purse strings tighter, consolidating positions, and largely struggling to meet employee needs due to shrinking budgets.

 

Despite years of unprecedented workplace shifts, U.S. workers and recruiters remain resilient and optimistic. Monster’s Work Watch Report highlights that 92% of U.S. businesses plan to recruit in 2023. Despite economic headwinds, 96% of recruiters are confident (44%) or very confident (55%) of finding the right worker. Additionally, 64% or workers  are confident they could easily find a new job in 2023 — even in a looming recession.
