Does the Remote Work revolution have legs?

Does the Remote Work revolution have legs? | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

When the coronavirus pandemic took hold in early 2020, organizations across the globe had to quickly transition their employees to a remote work environment.

Roughly a year later, full-scale telework is still a reality for many organizations, especially so in the United States. Research from Mursion, Inc., a virtual reality training platform, found that most companies will stay in a remote or hybrid work environment, as just 9% of managers and 13% of employees plan to go back to the office full-time in the next six months.

Teleperformance, a customer experience management company, recently announced a shift to a hybrid work model across its global operations, a decision based on its telework success during the pandemic.

Work from anywhere is not a pandemic play,” said Jose Guereque, executive vice president of infrastructure and chief information officer at Teleperformance. “We will keep the hybrid scheme forever as our permanent model.”

The Post COVID-19 Workplace: Will I ever eat with my colleagues again?

The Post COVID-19 Workplace: Will I ever eat with my colleagues again? | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

As real estate advisors, we are constantly asked, “What will the workplace look like? How will it feel and function in the coming years?”

In the 24/7 news cycle, we’ve heard hundreds of proclamations from companies– all confident of their workplace model and frequently in contradiction to each other. Major employers, including Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce, have different strategies. Some expect a return to a primarily traditional workplace, while others have suggested hybrid, hub and spoke, hoteling and even fully remote workplace solutions.

The truth is, we remain in the early stages of the workplace solution and it is difficult for anyone to answer the workplace question with certainty. We feel confident in saying that it will evolve, and the flexibility many employees have enjoyed will remain an essential consideration in the future. We are certain that “one size will not fit all” in our varied work environments, presenting an opportunity if implemented thoughtfully, to assess your needs and “tailor-make” what works best for your business in the post-COVID-19 environment.

Robots will not take jobs — if CIOs start preparing the workforce now | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Analysts and technologists overplayed long ago the idea automation will replace the human workforce, but MIT's future of work task force found some truth in need to prepare for emerging technology disruption.

MIT launched the future of work task force in 2018 in response to the idea that robots are taking away jobs, but found the technology shaping the future of work actually moves very slowly. CIOs and other business leaders have time to prepare, if they start investing in skills and adaptations now.

What employees are saying about the Future of Remote Work

What employees are saying about the Future of Remote Work | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

As organizations look to the postpandemic future, many are planning a hybrid virtual model that combines remote work with time in the office. This sensible decision follows solid productivity increases during the pandemic.

But while productivity may have gone up, many employees report feeling anxious and burned out. Unless leaders address the sources of employee anxiety, pandemic-style productivity gains may prove unsustainable in the future. 1 That’s because anxiety is known to reduce job satisfaction, negatively affect interpersonal relationships with colleagues, and decrease work performance.

Our survey results make the source of anxiety clear: employees feel they’ve yet to hear enough about their employers’ plans for post-COVID-19 working arrangements. Organizations may have announced a general intent to embrace hybrid virtual work going forward, but too few of them, employees say, have shared detailed guidelines, policies, expectations, and approaches. And the lack of remote-relevant specifics is leaving employees anxious.

As organizational leaders chart the path toward the postpandemic world, they need to communicate more frequently with their employees—even if their plans have yet to solidify fully. Organizations that have articulated more specific policies and approaches for the future workplace have seen employee well-being and productivity rise.

Robots changing the way we work in our daily lives

Robots changing the way we work in our daily lives | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Advances in the field of robotics which is a mix of computer science, mechanical and electronics engineering, and science have implied that machines or related types of automation currently do the work of humans in a wide range of settings, for example, medicine, where robots perform medical procedures previously done by the surgeon’s hand. Robots have made it simpler and less expensive for employers to complete work. The drawback, in any case, is that some sensibly well-paying jobs that gave white-collar class work to people have become the area of machines.

These robots want to read your mind while you work — you should let them | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

The emotional intelligence this EEG technology is attempting to create walks the line between WALL-E-like endearment and Orwellian panoptic control, but like any modernizing workplace technology, it’s coming for us whether we like it or not.

The narrative of workplace automation often dictates that robots or machines will replace humans in the workforce in fields ranging from assembly lines and hair salons to the operating room. But human-robot collaboration (HRC) offers a different viewpoint and proposes that new workplace technology (particularly, robots) will instead work alongside humans, like co-workers.

This is particularly prevalent, write the Penn State researchers in their study published in the journal Automation in Construction this April, in fields like construction where there’s little opportunity for robotic workers and human workers to work separately from one another. To accomplish dynamic tasks, like laying brick, it’s more likely that human workers and robots will have to work together.

The future of work at Google is flexibility” stated Sundar Pichai’s recent communication to Googlers as CEO of the company. Sundar sent an email to Google employees on May 5 to communicate to the employees a vision of the post-pandemic workplace.

As organizations look to the postpandemic future, most organizations have not clearly communicated how that model is going to look like to the employees, increasing anxiousness and burnout. A McKinsey study showed that employees who feel included in more detailed communication were nearly five times more likely to report increased productivity.

AI should augment human intelligence, not replace it | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

In an economy where data is changing how companies create value — and compete — experts predict that using artificial intelligence (AI) at a larger scale will add as much as $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. As AI is changing how companies work, many believe that who does this work will change, too — and that organizations will begin to replace human employees with intelligent machines. This is already happening: intelligent systems are displacing humans in manufacturing, service delivery, recruitment, and the financial industry, consequently moving human workers towards lower-paid jobs or making them unemployed. This trend has led some to conclude that in 2040 our workforce may be totally unrecognizable.

One way to predict the future of work is to understand people’s remote work experiences over the last year. And based on recent reports, one thing is clear: remote work has left an impression. The Limeade Institute’s Employee Care Report 3.0 found that 100% of formerly onsite workers said they’re anxious about returning to the office, 71% said they were concerned about less flexibility and 77% said they’re worried about exposure to Covid-19.

The future of work is hybrid. But how do you make it a success?

The future of work is hybrid. But how do you make it a success? | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

After working from home during 2020, employees want to retain that freedom and flexibility. Organisations need to adapt. That means providing not just wonderful workplaces but also empowering and enabling their talent to work from remote workspaces. For leaders who can make hybrid working ‘work’ for their organisation, the rewards will be significant.

There remains much complexity and uncertainty around the exact nature of work in the wake of COVID-19. But one thing is clear: the future of work is hybrid. Hybrid means employees will work in dispersed working environments. There will no longer be one workplace. There will be many workplaces that form part of an organisation’s property footprint.

Those workplaces could be a CBD office, a hub-and-spoke model with regional and suburban offices, or some other variation. For knowledge workers, who just need a laptop, these spaces could be anywhere. A café. A co-working space. The train. The bedroom.

Conexiones fuertes en distancias largas: Nuevas formas de comunicación en entornos no presenciales | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

The future of Immersive Training is here. When should you invest?

The future of Immersive Training is here. When should you invest? | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

You stand in the operating room among your medical team, ready to operate on a patient’s shattered shoulder bone. The procedure is challenging but it goes smoothly. Once the final stitches are in and you finish the job, you do something unexpected: you take off a virtual reality (VR) headset. The operating room vanishes and, in its place, sits a small VR setup, ready to provide training for the next complex procedure from your office, lab or even the comfort of your home.

This example illustrates just one application of immersive training technologies, which are seeing a marked upswing in demand in the current novel coronavirus quarantine environment. Up to half of American workers are working from home, including skilled experts in many professions and industries who are removed from their equipment and typical work environments and in need of training to keep their skills sharp. From healthcare to manufacturing to military training, immersive technologies can accelerate performance and increase safety in training and job performance.

4 things for employers to consider about the Future of Work

4 things for employers to consider about the Future of Work | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Leaders seem to be divided about what the workplace of the future might look like. Some I have spoken with over the past 12 months are under the impression that a return to 100 percent office-based work is in the cards, while others will remain fully remote or adopt a hybrid solution.

Going back to 100 percent office-based work ignores certain how the world of work is changing. For employees, often, the element of choice is the key to work satisfaction. Choice equals freedom. Many employees may be itching to get back to the office and to face-to-face contact, but perhaps, not full-time, as before.

What does a recent trend study tells us about The Future? | Edumorfosis.Work | Scoop.it

Each year the Future Today Institute releases a very comprehensive trend study during SXSW. I just finished getting through this very comprehensive installment. In announcing this year’s report, Founder Amy Webb had this to say:

The cataclysmic events of the past year resulted in a significant number of new signals. As a result, we’ve analyzed nearly 500 tech and science trends across multiple industry sectors. Rather than squeezing the trends into one enormous tome as we usually do, we are instead publishing 12 separate reports with trends grouped by subject. We are including what we’ve called Book Zero, which shows how we did our work. There is also an enormous, 504-page PDF with all content grouped together as one document.

Well, Amy was not kidding, there is quite a bit to digest. The 12 separate reports referenced can be downloaded Here. As I do with each look into the future, I captured some highlights from this year’s trend study. I will start however with an important observation that Amy made in the opening of the report.

Artificial Intelligence seems to be on the tip of everyone’s tongue these days. While I’ve been aware of this major trend in tech development for a while, I’ve noticed AI appearing more and more as one of the most in-demand areas of expertise for job seekers.

I’m sure that for many of us, the term “AI” conjures up sci-fi fantasies or fear about robots taking over the world. The depictions of AI in the media have run the gamut, and while no one can predict exactly how it will evolve in the future, the current trends and developments paint a much different picture of how AI will become part of our lives.

In reality, AI is already at work all around us, impacting everything from our search results, to our online dating prospects, to the way we shop. Data shows that the use of AI in many sectors of business has grown by 270% over the last four years.
