The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday upheld a federal law that makes it a crime for people under domestic violence restraining orders to have guns, handing a victory to President Joe Biden's administration as the justices opted not to further widen firearms rights after a major expansion in 2022.

Whitmer gathered with advocates and lawmakers Monday to sign a new law that temporarily bans those convicted of domestic violence-related crimes from having or using guns.

The Michigan Legislature passed bills this week that would prohibit domestic violence offenders from having guns until eight years after they complete their sentence.

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the broad reach of a federal law that bars people convicted of domestic violence from owning guns.

The justices on Monday rejected arguments that the law covers only intentional or knowing acts of abuse and not those committed recklessly. One example the court gave was throwing a plate in the heat of an argument.

The case involved two Maine men who said their guilty pleas for hitting their partners should not disqualify them from gun ownership. A federal appeals court had ruled against the men.

The dispute drew interest from gun rights groups, who argued that the men should not lose their constitutional right to bear arms, as well as from advocates for domestic abuse victims.

Highlighting the connection between guns, suicide and domestic violence is crucial, with the Supreme Court considering U.S. v. Rahimi.

The new laws aim to keep firearms out of the hands of perpetrators of domestic violence.

The Michigan Senate passed a bill package Wednesday meant to stop domestic abusers from possessing firearms.
