‘Climate Tech’ is a meaningless buzzword. Let’s do this instead | by Matt Rogers | FastCompany.com

“Climate tech” isn’t a thing. It has shifted in recent years from a category to define clean energy companies to an umbrella phrase that loses meaning the more we use it.

Granted, the term is everywhere: inserted into VC pitch decks, plastered on billboards along highways from San Francisco to Austin to Boston, wedged into government policy papers, and featured prominently on conference agendas. Media properties from CNBC to GreenBiz rely on it as a traffic-driving category.

And there’s a reason why.

The Founding Fathers: America’s First Climate Advocates | by Rafael Calel | Observatory.wiki | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV and HEV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

The United States has in recent years become a stronghold for climate change skepticism, especially since the country’s declaration in 2001 that it would not participate in the Kyoto Protocol. Nevertheless, though it is a well-documented fact, it might surprise you to learn that, a far cry from the United States’ recent ambivalence with respect to the modern scientific theory of man-made climate change, the country’s founders were keen observers of climatic trends and might even be counted among the first climate change advocates.

From the start, the project to colonize North America had proceeded on the understanding that climate followed latitude; so dependent was climate on the angle of the sun to the earth’s surface, it was believed, that the word ‘climate’ was defined in terms of parallels of latitude. New England was expected to be as mild as England, and Virginia as hot as Italy and Spain. Surprised by harsh conditions in the New World, however, a great number of the early settlers did not outlast their first winter in the colonies. Many of the survivors returned to Europe, and in fact, the majority of 17th-century colonies in North America were abandoned.

COP30, which is also known as the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference, is underway—and Trump won’t be attending. He’ll be glad he decided to skip it too, as several world leaders at the event are throwing shade his way.

Without saying Trump’s name, Brazil’s President Lula da Silva called out the “extremist forces that fabricate fake news and are condemning future generations to life on a planet altered forever by global warming.” While French President Emmanuel Macron stated: “climate misinformation today poses a threat to our democracies.”

Others were more direct, like Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who said: “Trump is against humankind.” And Chilean President Gabriel Boric blasted Trump for calling climate science a “hoax” and “con job,” stating: “That is a lie … We might have legitimate discussions about how to face these things, but we cannot deny them.”

Oregon utility tries out a faster, cheaper way to power data centers | By Jeff St. John | CanaryMedia.com | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV and HEV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Portland General Electric used Gridcare’s software to identify extra space on its grid — available to any existing data center willing to be flexible.

A first-of-a-kind project underway outside Portland, Oregon, could provide a model for data centers to connect to the grid without driving up utility bills and carbon emissions.

Silicon Valley startup Gridcare launched in May with a promise that its artificial intelligence–powered software can help actualize one of the hottest concepts in the electricity sector: data center flexibility. Last month, it announced the successful use of its software by utility Portland General Electric (PGE) to bring 80 megawatts of data center load online next year in Hillsboro, Oregon.

That’s not a ton of new computing load, considering the gigawatts’ of prospective data center expansions being planned across the country. But as a real-world example of a utility planning around a data center’s commitment to reduce power use during moments of high demand, the project may well be a breakthrough.

Waymo Expands Its Robotaxi Fleet to Las Vegas, San Diego and Detroit. Everything to Know | by Abrar Al-Heeti | CNET.com | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV and HEV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Self-driving cars are slowly becoming less sci-fi and more real-world as companies like Waymo, the autonomous arm of Google's parent, Alphabet, expand into more areas.

On Monday, Waymo said it's bringing its ride-hailing service to three new cities: Las VegasSan Diego and Detroit. As part of the rollout, Waymo is deploying both its Jaguar I-Pace fleet, which already operates in a handful of other cities, as well as the newer Zeeker RT vehicles that are equipped with Waymo's latest, sixth-generation self-driving technology. The company plans to open up to public riders in the new locations next year.

Waymo currently operates fully autonomous rides for the general public in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Austin, Texas, which use the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. The vehicles can be summoned either via the Waymo app or Uber, depending on the city.

Waymo's expansions have ramped up in recent months, with NashvilleNew YorkDenver and Seattle joining the roster of upcoming robotaxi locations. In an Aug. 29 blog post, Waymo said it's "entering a new chapter and accelerating our commercial expansion."

America Gave Away Rare Earths | by Daniel Kishi | CommonPlace.org

America Gave Away Rare Earths | by Daniel Kishi | CommonPlace.org | @The Convergence of ICT, the Environment, Climate Change, EV and HEV Transportation & Distributed Renewable Energy | Scoop.it

Earlier this month, the Chinese government announced export controls on rare earth elements and rare earth magnets, asserting authority not only over the raw materials that are critical to modern manufacturing but also over the mining, processing, and magnet-making technologies that enable their production. The licensing regime is expansive and can pull certain foreign-made products into Beijing’s dragnet if they contain even trace amounts of Chinese-origin rare earth content. China did not need to impose an outright export ban to make its point: The Chinese Communist Party, as a result of a decades-long industrial policy, holds a near-monopoly position over rare earths and rare earth magnets—inputs essential for the manufacture of a wide range of modern defense and industrial goods—giving Beijing a chokepoint that, if fully leveraged, could bring factories in the United States and around the world to a standstill.

The response from U.S. policymakers reflected the severity of the threat, the extent to which this dependency had been allowed to deepen, and the scale of the policy response necessary to neutralize it.
