March 1 – Brazil’s Federal Police are claiming the price tag of Salvador’s Fonte Nova stadium, a 2014 World Cup venue, was inflated by as much as $130 million. Seven arrest warrants have been issued in connection to the investigation, including for the former governor of Bahia Jaques Wagner. The Fonte Nova Stadium hosted six matches at the 2014 World Cup, including Netherlands’ 5-1 demolition of Spain. Built on the site of the old stadium the state-of-the-art new venue construction costs were estimated at $250 million. Read more …

By Andrew Warshaw December 5 – The “unwarranted criminal compliant” brought by Brazilian authorities during the latter stages of the 2014 World Cup against British ticket and hospitality consultant Ray Whelan has “officially closed in its entirety” according to his employers. A 20% jump in income from its Asia and North Africa region enabled FIFA to generate marginally more TV revenue from the 2014 World Cup than the previous edition in South Africa. This was in spite of a near 10% decline in revenue from the key European region.

By Andrew Downie SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The 12 stadiums used in this year's football World Cup cost 50 percent more than planned and only six of the 35 promised public transportation projects were finished on time, according to an as yet unpublished report from Brazil's Federal Accounts Court. Twelve arenas were remodelled or built from scratch at a cost of 8.44 billion reais (2 billion pounds), the court said in its most thorough report on World Cup spending since the tournament ended in July. A newly published survey of UK, US and Brazilian consumers finds that Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Visa and Adidas were the most recognised sponsors of the World Cup in Brazil, achieving recognition among 50%, 39%, 41% and 36% respectively, amongst UK, US and Brazilian consumers.

FIFA is suspending further transfers from a World Cup legacy fund to Brazil pending further talks with the Brazilian federation, the CBF. Brazil has only received $8.7 million from the fund 17 months after the most profitable World Cup in history.
