The South Texas Shore Is America's New Energy Coast

The South Texas Shore Is America's New Energy Coast | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

The federal Energy Information Administration (EIA) now projects the United States to become a net-energy exporter by 2020, and that prediction is based in large part on what’s happening here in the Corpus Christi area.

The port is already the number one exporter of crude oil in the United States, and the south Texas coast is on the leading edge of the new, booming liquid natural gas export market. Visits by huge ships like the Hong Kong Spirit are signs of this new economic reality.

Man and son plan to hike the Mexico border to re-think migration #borderpride

Man and son plan to hike the Mexico border to re-think migration #borderpride    | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

Follow Paul and Nick Pineda as they embark on a grueling hike to humanize the communities living along the border, and to counteract fear-mongering aimed at immigrants.

In the last year, we’ve heard heart-wrenching stories of migrant families separated in detention centers at the U.S.-Mexico border; of a federal government in Washington, D.C., that seems unable to keep track of these families or reunite all of them. We’ve listened as President Trump has stoked animosity toward migrants — both those who seek to cross legally and illegally — by describing them as criminal-minded invaders.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers were subjected to a government shutdown over the bitter fight to fund Trump’s border wall, plunging many of them into financial crisis. Then Trump declared a national emergency in an effort to secure money for wall construction.

Most of us might be content to sit back and roll our eyes over the slow-moving debacle that is our national immigration discourse.

But Paul Pineda isn’t satisfied with watching from the sidelines at his home in Seattle’s Columbia City neighborhood.

He and his son Nick plan to show their support for a more conscientious border #borderpride debate by walking along it themselves — and taking us with them via social media.

What You Need to Know About Using Your Dental Insurance to Cover Treatment in Mexico

According to the Fair Health Consumer, on average, a dental crown in the U.S. will run you around $1,672.

Dental crowns and root canals can cost thousands of dollars.
If you are getting a procedure that’s covered, most likely you will still be responsible for your deductible and co-payment or co-insurance portion of the treatment.  Premiums, deductibles, and co-pays, ouch! Dental costs add up fast

Thankfully, there is excellent dental care available in Mexico. Border towns like Progreso on the Texas border have been serving American dental tourist for over 20 years saving much of the co-payment.

How the Government Shutdown is Affecting Texas

How the Government Shutdown is Affecting Texas | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

Harvey Relief

Many Texans who were affected by Hurricane Harvey are still waiting for federal aid, and the shutdown won’t make it any easier to get that aid. According to Houston Public Media, Harris County is putting a hold on Harvey recovery projects that relied in part on federal money.

According to Politico, HUD can’t issue guidance to state agencies on how to apply for billions of dollars in aid to help prepare for natural disasters, and KXAN reported that Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush wrote a letter to Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, asking for help. “The GLO has provided information to HUD on what type of mitigation projects would best serve those impacted by Hurricane Harvey,” Bush wrote, according to KXAN. “

This collaboration was done in part to help expedite publication of the rules governing these funds in the Federal Register.

Unfortunately, the publication of these rules has been considerably delayed. I am writing to ask you to please approve these rules for publication as soon as possible so we can get started on construction of vital infrastructure projects to protect Texans from the type of damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. We cannot afford to wait any longer.”

Texas Named CNBC's “America’s Top State For Business” For 2018 | Office of the Texas Governor | Greg Abbott

Texas Named CNBC's “America’s Top State For Business” For 2018 | Office of the Texas Governor | Greg Abbott | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

CNBC announced that Texas has been named America's top state for business in 2018.

“Texas offers a blueprint for business success,” said Governor Abbott. “The Texas economy is the fastest growing in the nation, and more Texans are working than ever before. This is not an accident – reforming taxes, removing regulatory barriers, encouraging participation in the sharing economy, investing in our education system, and securing Texans’ freedom to aspire is our formula for success.

The Governor will work to continue to keep Texas the best state to build a business big or small, and implement a blueprint for a new era of economic expansion.

In this year's ranking, CNBC highlights Texas' impressive economic success, superior workforce and robust infrastructure investments. The study also gives Texas top scores for quality of life, cost of living and technology and innovation. Other contributing categories include access to capital, business friendliness, cost of doing business and education.

Texas leads all states in private-sector job creation ─ over the month, over the year and over the past 10 years. Texas has added over 346,300 private-sector jobs in the last year, and over 1.7 million in the last decade. New business formation in Texas is at a five-year high, and jobs in Texas are now on pace for the strongest growth in four years.

Watch to see the Governor's full interview with CNBC.

People in open-concept homes are realizing the walls were there for a reason

People in open-concept homes are realizing the walls were there for a reason  | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

The interior-wall-free style became popular in the 1970s, Wagner wrote in CityLab. “Overall, the open concept was a reaction against years of small, low-ceilinged living, which felt restricting and stuffy to a new generation of home buyers.”

The open concept made us believe that without walls we’d be free to soar!

Whether [buyers] entertain or not, when they’re looking for a new home, they picture themselves entertaining. They want that big open space.

The Climate Change Paper So Depressing It's Sending People to Therapy or Fake News

The Climate Change Paper So Depressing It's Sending People to Therapy or Fake News | Texas Coast Real Estate | Scoop.it

Deep Adaptation" is quite unlike any other academic paper. There's the language "we are about to play Russian Roulette with the entire human race with already two bullets loaded".

There's the flashes of dark humor. But most of all, there's the stark conclusions that it draws about the future. Chiefly, that it's too late to stop climate change from devastating our world—and that "climate-induced societal collapse is now inevitable in the near term.

How near? About a decade or maybe it's Fake News!

Imagine the hottest day you've ever experienced. Now imagine it's six, 10 or 12 degrees hotter. According to climate researcher Alice Bows-Larkin, that's the type of future in store for us if we don't significantly cut our greenhouse gas emissions now.

She suggests that it's time we do things differently—a whole system change, in fact—and seriously consider trading economic growth for climate stability.
