Microblogging is a great way to generate content on a short term scale and stay visible to your audience,

Lori Wilk's curator insight, January 27, 2014 3:18 PM

I am a Twitter fan and have sent out more than 20,000 Tweets to date.To get more followers you want to microblog good content and mention others as well as use relevant #hashtags to track the conversations.What I have learned most recently by curating , creating, and sharing content is that there will be many people who understand that to scale this social participation requires sending out lots of Tweets and I am totally happy with the un-follows as much as the follows because those who want my help and like what I am about and have to offer will be there with me and those who don't can find the groups they want to be part of or none at all. I know what it's like in the real world to have fans from being a television producer and building an audience from scratch. My microblogging is authentic and I don't buy followers. It's impossible to recognize and promote hundreds of people without sending out lots of Tweets, especially if you want to give them Klout or Kred. I am dedicated to moving the needle of online influence and this means lots of participating online especially with microblogging such as Twitter. I welcome more followers on Twitter at Successipes and in knowing more about what you are doing that is awesome so I can share it with the world. Your online friend and "Princess of Curation," Lori Wilk

Parasitic wasp inspires advancements in surgery

Parasitic wasp inspires advancements in surgery | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it
Reseachers from Wageningen University & Research are inspired by the ovipositor of the parasitic wasp for the development of a steerable surgical needle.

Flexible, ultra-thin and steerable needles would help surgeons perform operations even better. Researchers at Wageningen University & Research are therefore studying the ovipositor with which the parasitic wasp lays its eggs. Based on their findings, colleagues at Delft University of Technology have developed the first prototype of this needle which is the thinnest needle in the world. Solutions found in nature are often the source of human inventions such as self-cleaning paint and underwater robots.

During medical procedures, it is important to cause as little damage as possible to tissue, nerve bundles and blood vessels. This can be especially complicated in brain surgery or surgery performed around the spinal cord. Researchers from Delft University of Technology are therefore working on the development of an ultra-thin, flexible and steerable needle. They asked their colleagues at Wageningen University & Research for possible solutions inspired by nature. They in turn turned to the parasitic wasp for inspiration.

The parasitic wasp lays its eggs in the larvae of other insects which are often hidden inside plants or fruit. The parasitic wasp inserts the eggs through a narrow, hollow tube-like structure at the end of her abdomen called the ovipositor. She uses this to pierce through obstacles until she reaches the larvae into which she can insert her eggs. These larvae then become the food for the larvae of the parasitic wasp. The ovipositor of the parasitic wasp is unique, as it is exceptionally flexible.

Technology – P4P Energy

TECHNOLOGY Solar Tensile Structures P4P’s patented, PV panel suspension system utilizes tensioned steel cable technology to reduce cost and bring about entirely new solar applications. P4P’s solution incorporates the same tensile structure principles used in thousands of suspension bridges around the world, to suspend solar panels. This approach allows unparalleled versatility, enabling PV arrays to be supported at virtually any height on free spans of up to 100 meters. P4P’s system is ultralight yet designed to withstand hurricane force winds. Low Cost Solution The use of tensioned cables allows more weight to be supported using less material, creating inherently light, efficient, and cost-effective structures. The nature of the design also requires fewer foundations, reducing the environmental footprint and foundation cost. Cables are self-aligning and can be tensioned quickly with modern hydraulic tools, resulting in a fast and efficient construction process with reduced labor costs. Necessity P4P’s systems have an immediate impact on reducing solar system costs, and at the same time create a bridge to the future where solar installations do more than simply generate electricity. Besides power, solar-shade structures can multiply infrastructure value in mitigating land constraint, water supply and food production issues –as these issues become more urgent. P4P’s unique technology can address multiple sustainability challenges with a single, cost-efficient technology capable of being applied at very large scale.

SpaceX has succeeded in launching its third mission with the Falcon Heavy high-capacity rocket it first launched successfully last year. The rocket’s STP-2 mission took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida towards the end of a four-hour launch window that opened at 11:30 PM EDT on Monday, with liftoff taking place at 2:30 AM EDT on Tuesday after the launch was pushed back so that the ground crew could complete “additional ground system checkouts.”

The launch was a first for SpaceX in a number of different ways:

AT&T CFO: Don’t expect 5G revenues anytime soon | Mike Dano | FierceWireless.com | Technological Sparks | Scoop.it

AT&T’s CFO said that the carrier doesn’t expect to record significant revenues from 5G services in the near term.

“On revenue opportunities, will we say in five years, how did we ever live without this? I would say yes,” AT&T CFO John Stephens said at an investor conference this week, according to a Reuters article of his comments. “It’s an exciting spot. We’re ready. But I’m not here to make any predictions on revenue opportunities in ‘19.”

Stephens also pointed out that only 5% of AT&T’s customer buy a new phone every quarter, which means that it would take years for AT&T to distribute 5G devices to its 150 million customers. (Indeed, mobile customers are holding onto their phones for longer and longer periods of time.}
