"Thirty-four southeast Wisconsin teens will soon have the opportunity to learn the trade of welding before they even graduate high school. Students from high schools in Gateway Technical College’s district will soon be able to enroll in a Welding Academy project, through which they can earn up to 17 college credits toward a welding-maintenance and fabrication technical diploma during their high school years. They will also be able to qualify for a welding youth apprenticeship."

"The Gateway Technical College Foundation has received a $1.2 million bequest from the Beverly and Otto Tarnowski estate.

This is the largest single bequest gift the Gateway Foundation has ever received, college officials said.

 

"This legacy gift is added to their $804,000 gift to establish Tarnowski Hall at Gateway’s SC Johnson iMET Center in Sturtevant in 2013. Combined, the Tarnowski support from Gateway students totals more than $2 million. Beverly and Otto were passionate about the mission of Gateway and the promise of education and training as a path for youth to succeed in life."

"Chef Dave Heide works on a new concept in sustainable dining. His Little John’s will address food access, food waste and job training.

 

"The idea was born a couple years back when Heide and restaurateur Patrick DePula were participating in a food sustainability conference at Madison College. Heide asked Tim Metcalfe, of Metcalfe’s Market, to donate one day’s worth of waste product from the Hilldale store."

 

“We had 600-plus people at the conference and made more than 3,600 portions of food for them, and you could barely tell that we had touched what Metcalfe donated,” says Heide. “That’s what sparked it — all that food, and how terrible it is that we have people going hungry.”
