VIETNAM: In Search of Greener Pastures for Sustainable Growth in Vietnam

VIETNAM: In Search of Greener Pastures for Sustainable Growth in Vietnam | SRI Global News: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024 **sririce.org -- System of Rice Intensification | Scoop.it

Like many nations, Vietnam’s growth prospects are challenged by conflicting objectives. The ruling Communist Party aims to reach high-income status by 2045, which would improve wellbeing indicators. But the Party has also committed to various environmental targets... Farmers in the Mekong Delta have sought to increase rice production with high-yielding seeds and chemical fertilisers. This intensive cultivation has degraded soil quality, which is feared to reduce overall soil fertility and crop yields over time.
To prevent unsustainable internal developments from stifling future growth, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has supported System of Rice Intensification methods aimed at increasing rice yields while reducing costs and water usage. Recent studies indicate that greater coordination between farmers and the government — as well as increased training — is required for its implementation.

VIETNAM: Scaling Up Model of Input Cost Reduction: SRI Provides Benefits and Mitigates Damage | SRI Global News: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024 **sririce.org -- System of Rice Intensification | Scoop.it

Farmers in Binh Thuan who have implemented a rice production model based on SRI (the System of Rice Intensification) have discovered that the method greatly reduces input costs and increases income.

...According to the Binh Thuan Agricultural Extension Center, the province has produced 1,100ha of rice using the SRI technology so far. The Center will continue to develop models in important rice-growing districts of the province in the future years, with the goal of creating a concentrated, high-quality commercial rice-producing area. In 2022, the Center will establish a model of intensive rice production using the SRI method, which is certified VietGAP and provides chain-link traceability, on size of around 20ha in the rice area of Tanh Linh district.

VIETNAM: Hà Nội in the front line on curtailing the use of pesticide | SRI Global News: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024 **sririce.org -- System of Rice Intensification | Scoop.it

In an interview, Nguyen Manh Phuong, director of the Hanoi Department of Plant Production and Protection said the success in cutting down pesticide use in  agriculture is attributed to the timely instruction and transfer of science and technology to Hanoi's farmers. The Department has distributed material for farmers on how best to use pesticides, worked with district and commune People’s Committees in Hanoi to launch campaigns and, in the past three years, organized 63 workshops to train almost 6,000 shop-owners and farmers on how to properly manage and use pesticides. Regular inspections has also reduced illegal sales of pesticides. In addition, the total area under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Hanoi is about 60% and there are 5,000 ha. of certified organic vegetables

System of Rice Intensification | Oxfam

System of Rice Intensification | Oxfam | SRI Global News: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024 **sririce.org -- System of Rice Intensification | Scoop.it

Helping farmers adopt the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) enables them to grow far more food more cost-effectively and sustainably, producing higher yields with less water, fertilizer, seeds, and labor. With Oxfam’s support, more than one million farmers and families in Vietnam and Cambodia have practiced SRI and benefited from both improved and local rice varieties. On average, farmers have seen a 10–100 percent or more increase in yields, up to a 90 percent reduction in required seed, and up to a 50 percent savings in water usage. The rice plant health and ecosystems in the paddy fields continually improve. SRI has reached more than 16 percent of the total rice farming population in the northern region of Vietnam—home to most of the small-scale, resource-poor rice farmers in the country.

...The findings reported here derive from a regional collaborative project (http://www.sri-lmb.ait.asia/). More than 15,000 farmers participated in the field trials located in 33 districts of 11 provinces in the Lower-Mekong-Basin (LMB). The number of experiments conducted was more than 1,500. Project data show that System of Rice Intensification practices helped to improve conditions across the LMB region. Average rice yield increased by 52%, net economic returns were raised by 70%. Labour productivity increased by 64%; water productivity by 61%; and the efficiency of mineral fertilizer-use rose by 163%. The total energy input required for farming operations was decreased by 34%, while emissions of greenhouse gas were significantly reduced, by 14% with irrigated rice production, and by 17% per-hectare in rainfed cropping. The results of this farmer-participatory research characterize climate-smart agricultural practices that can promote household-food-security and support market-oriented development at low cost, especially in rainfed areas.

VIETNAM: Effect of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) on growth and yield performance in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province

A field study was conducted in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam during May 2019 to observe the effects of SRI method on the rice yield and eradicate the factor affecting the yield. The study was carried out to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of rice, fresh and dry matter production, soil characteristics with a focus group discussion regarding cultivation by SRI and non-SRI methods. The soil analyses  showed quite similar soil fertility in both SRI and non-SRI methods, while rice plants showed good agronomic performances and fresh and dry matter production in SRI method. The yield and yield potentials of rice were greater in SRI than that in non-SRI methods. Focus group discussion found some factors that limited SRI development in Nam Dong district.

VIETNAM: Northern provinces urged to bring pesticide use under control

VIETNAM: Northern provinces urged to bring pesticide use under control | SRI Global News: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024 **sririce.org -- System of Rice Intensification | Scoop.it

With 70 per cent of the population working in the agricultural sector, agrochemical exposure seems to be inevitable in the country. As many as 4,000 pesticide products are sold in Việt Nam and a huge amount of synthetic fertiliser is sprayed on fields nationwide. Farmers are mainly exposed to agrochemicals when spraying fertiliser and pesticides, as well as when cleaning their equipment. The danger is also present as substances can absorb into the soil or leak into neighbouring fields.

Despite also being in Phú Xuyên District, Vân Từ Commune stopped using pesticides seven years ago,” Hà Nội’s Mỹ Đức District is a pioneer in applying the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) which allows an 80 per cent reduction in the use of agrochemicals. At first, the SRI was opposed by local farmers afraid of poor crops. However, thanks to the high productivity the method has brought, its application has been expanded over the past ten years.

Nguyễn Mạnh Phương, deputy head of Hà Nội's Plant Protection Department, said 5,000 training courses on SRI and IPM have been offered to more than 120,000 farmers with the expectation of bringing agrochemical use under control.

SRI-Rice's insight:

With the help of the Dutch SNV Development Organization’s FLOW project, Binh Thuan has set up several models of climate-smart agriculture. The central province, with 43,000 ha. of rice, is frequently hit by drought, and , since 2016, has applied SRI to 255 hectares of rice cultivation in three districts. SRI has saved water and reduced costs while increasing farmer yields and incomes. Binh Thuan will hopefully be using SRI methods on 3,300 ha. by 2025.
