The regional training of trainers’ workshop on the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) and Climate-Resilient Rice Production (CRRP) took place in Grand-Lahou on Friday, April 5th, 2024. Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, OSS Executive Secretary, expressed his gratitude towards the authorities of Côte d’Ivoire for hosting the event, highlighting National Rural Development Support Agency (ANADER) and its excellent agricultural mechanization training center in Grand-Lahou. He also thanked Dr. Erika Styger and Dr. Karim Traore for training of the future Master Trainers who will play a significant role in the RICOWAS project. [See also French version.]

It included 45 experts from 13 West African countries belonging to the regional Scaling up Climate Resilient Rice Production in West Africa (RICOWAS) project, a four-year, $14 million effort funded by the Adaptation Fund to apply principles of SRI and Climate-Resilient Rice Production (CRRP). RICOWAS is overseen by the Sahara and Sahel Observator (OSS).

Le FIRCA, unité de coordination technique et fiduciaire du Programme de Productivité Agricole en Afrique de l’Ouest (PPAAO/WAAPP), a introduit technologies agricoles dans le secteur du vivrier en Côte d’Ivoire, sur la période de 2011 à 2016. M. KOUAKOU Marcel est l’un des précurseurs en Côte d’Ivoire, producteur de riz vivant à Yamoussoukro.

FIRCA, technical and fiduciary coordination unit of the Agricultural Productivity Program in West Africa (WAAPP/PPAAO), introduced agricultural technologies in the food sector in Côte d'Ivoire from 2011 to 2016. M KOUAKOU Marcel is one of the pioneers in Côte d'Ivoire, a rice producer living in Yamoussoukro, who continues to promote SRI.
Tanzanians who participated in the System of Rice Intensification training shared their stories of how a new rice growing system improved their lives. A bottom-up and more inclusive approach led to a successful outcome. Tanzania is one of the participating countries in the “Partnership for Sustainable Rice Systems Development in Sub-Saharan Africa” project within the framework of South-South Cooperation. Tanzania has achieved a tremendous impact on farmers in five irrigation schemes’ regional districts. Besides Tanzania, the project supported Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Uganda.
Du 25 au 27 juin 2018, une délégation d’ambassadeurs de 7 pays et de l’Union Européenne a séjourné en Côte d’Ivoire pour se rendre compte des projets mis en œuvre par l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’Alimentation et l’Agriculture (FAO). Des visites de terrains ont été effectuées en vue de rencontrer les bénéficiaires et les partenaires techniques au nombre desquels l’on compte l’Agence Nationale d’Appui au Développement Rural (ANADER). ...la mise en place d’une parcelle de production de riz dont la FAO a assuré l’aménagement de 13 ha de bas-fond et fourni les matériels et équipements (semences, batteuses, motoculteurs, bâches, etc). Les bénéficiaires, visiblement motivés par ces appuis ont indiqué à leurs hôtes les activités conduites avec l’ANADER, notamment, le choix du Système de Riziculture Intensive (SRI) avec les bonnes pratiques agricoles enseignées. Cette méthode jugée plus productive avec un rendement de 5 à 7 tonnes de riz à l’hectare au lieu de 2.5 tonnes à l’hectare comme par le passé, se révèle également plus économique avec un besoin de 15 kg de semences à l’hectare au lieu de 80 kg/ha.

From 25 to 27 June 2018, a delegation of ambassadors from 7 countries and the EU visited Côte d'Ivoire to see the projects implemented by FAO. Field visits included the National Agency for Rural Development Support (ANADER), who established a 13 ha. rice project. Farmers chose to use SRI, which increased their yields to 5 - 7 ton/ha from 2.5, and was also more economical (needing only 15 kg of seed/ha instead of 80 kg / ha.)
The National Agency for the Promotion of Rural Development (ANADER) led a first attempt at SRI in Côte d'Ivoire, training 155 rice farmers in SRI at nine test sites. Yield increases of up to 67% and farmer interest by 92% resulted. These extension efforts inspired SRI adoption outside of test sites.This major success and unanticipated rapid spread is thanks to the efforts of various people who have stepped up as SRI champions. Two dynamic extension agents, Gnamien Kouakou and Saïbou Idée, led trainings with rice producers outside of the project scope....
More and more rice farmers in Africa are turning to the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). This technique is beneficial to them because it reduces production costs and provides higher yields. The benefits of this technique have allowed producers such as Marcel Yao Kouakou to become known as a model rice producer in Côte d'Ivoire. In 2013, he was awarded the Excellence Prize for best national producer in irrigated rice production in Cote d'Ivoire and in 2015, he was awarded the second Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit medal at the "Salon de l'Agriculture et des Ressources Animales."
The Adaptation Fund (AF) has just approved the “Scaling up Climate Resilient Rice Production in West Africa” (RICOWAS) project, during the thirty-seventh board meeting, held on October 19-21, 2021.
With a four-year implementation period, RICOWAS is the largest regional project funded by the AF in Africa with a total amount of $ 14 million and affecting thirteen ECOWAS countries; namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. The project focuses on scaling-up SRI in combination with agro-ecozone specific Sustainable Land and Water Management (SLWM) practices, which is being coined as Climate-Resilient Rice Production (CRRP). The overall purpose of the project is to improve climate resilience and increase the productivity of the rice system of smallholder rice farmers in West Africa by adopting a climate-resilient rice production approach.
Un projet de riziculture intensive a été lancé, jeudi, à Man à l’occasion d’un atelier initié par le centre national de recherche agronomique (CNRA) en collaboration avec plusieurs parties prenantes. An intensive rice project was launched in Man at a workshop initiated by the National Center for Agricultural Research (CNRA) in collaboration with several stakeholder groups.This workshop was held around the theme "Diffusion of intensive rice farming system (SRI), an innovative cultural practice for the improvement of rice production in Côte d'Ivoire".
The climate-smart agriculture profile of Côte d’Ivoire defines entry points for investing into and scaling climate-smart practices to achieve sustainable development. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is proposed as a solution to guide actions needed to transform and reorient agricultural systems to effectively support development and ensure food security under a changing climate. The approach aims to tackle three main objectives: sustainably increase agricultural productivity and incomes; adapt and build resilience to climate change; and reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions, where possible. The graph in this CCAFS article shows that, compared with other CSA innovations in Côte d’Ivoire, SRI is at the highest "smartness" level achieved there and is the second most adopted CSA innovation in Côte d’Ivoire!!
Abidjan, (AIP) – Un producteur de riz, Yao Kouakou Marcel, présente son savoir-faire au 4ème Salon international de l’agriculture et des ressources animales d’Abidjan (SARA 2017). Marcel utilise la technique SRI (Système de riziculture intensive). « C’est le SRI qui m’a permis aujourd’hui d’être autonome par qu’il permet d’augmenter réellement les rendements à l’hectare et de diminuer légèrement le coût de production », précise-t-il. Par le passé, poursuit Marcel, on prenait 50 ou 40 kg de semence pour la mise en place d’un hectare mais avec le SRI, j’utilise seulement que 10 kg pour la mise en place d’un hectare. « Du coup, si je dois acheter la semence à 1000 FCFA le kilogramme, au lieu de 40 ou de 50.000 FCFA, c’est seulement que 10.000 francs et en termes de transport, c’est plus facile. Même si je n’ai pas de vélo, je prends mes 10 kg, je m’en vais au champ et je fais mes semis tranquillement. »
SRI-Rice's insight:
Yao Kouakou Marcel presented his SRI expertise at the 4th International Exhibition of Agriculture and Animal Resources. He says "It's SRI that has allowed me today to be autonomous because it really increases yields per hectare and slightly reduce the cost of production." By using SRI with a short duration variety, he can harvest 8-9 tons/ha compared to previous 5-6 tons/ha. This comes to ~600,000-700,000 FCFA profit per hectare.
