Hilton Hurghada Plaza is a resort hotel with 220 rooms, covering 50,000m2 of beachside and fringed by turquoise waters. The hotel’s General Manager, Mr. Mehdi Othmani is an experienced practitioner when it comes to providing a holistic approach to people and place, as well as delivering quality service.

"Sustainability and conservation are embedded into the fabric of Hilton Worldwide and my team at Hilton Hurghada Plaza proves its commitment to essential green methods each and every day,” says Mr. Othmani. “We are proud to be the first Hilton Worldwide hotel in Europe, Middle East and Africa to be awarded Green Globe certification and, as such, be a standard bearer for environmentally friendly business practice within the company.”

Sustainable Event Alliance's insight:

It is fantastic to see individual hotels committed to reducing impacts and becoming more sustainably operated. But what of all the souveneir shops? Are there any examples of tourist destinations that have taken a stance on cheap and shoddy trinkets being sold in shop after shop, over packaged, and with who knows what labour conditions in their source factories? Any great examples of tourist locations that have tackled this insidious issue?

To call the inimitable PARKROYAL on Pickering a captivating oasis of green set within the bustling urban landscape of Singapore will not be too far from the truth. Designed by WOHA Architects to enthrall its guests with an overwhelming sense of green goodness, the hotel truly stands as a shining beacon of sustainable design on the edge of Singapore’s busy business district.

While most other hotel buildings and large commercial projects eat into the ‘green-growing’ potential of the proposed site, the audacious design of PARKROYAL ensures that it doubles the existing greenery of the site!

Exiled activist’s Olympic torch illuminates Sochi’s environmental ruin and Kremlin graft — Bellona.org

Exiled activist’s Olympic torch illuminates Sochi’s environmental ruin and Kremlin graft — Bellona.org | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

TALLINN, Estonia – Every couple of weeks, Suren Gazaryan, a Russian national born in Georgia, shuffles between Estonia and Germany in search of asylum after  being accused of attempted murder at home for outing the environmental evisceration and corruption paving the Kremlin’s road to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

If anyone is discussing issues of official extortion, ecological ruin, secret slush funds, and the extermination of one of the world’s most treasured landscapes at all, they have Gazaryan’s quiet, methodical, relentless, organized documentation and the work of the Environmental Watch on the North Caucasus (EWNC) to thank – or, in the case of the Kremlin, to blame.

Based in small towns with a headquarters office in Sochi, the group began as a collective of concerned citizens who feared encroachment on the Krasnodar Region’s protected national forests and seashores.

Ever since the Olympic bid ramped for the Sochi Games ramped up, the site has become a kind of ecological Wikileaks in Russian, documenting one governmental abuse, one illegal landfill and one graft scheme after another.

Rio 2016 Olympics to Serve Sustainable Seafood

All seafood served at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will be certified as sustainably wild caught and responsibly farmed, according to an agreement signed.

According to the memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), only sustainable seafood will be served to the athletes, officials, press and at the onsite restaurants, representing some 14 millions meals during the course of the games.

The MOUs describe how Rio 2016 will prioritize local certified seafood from the State of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. Rio 2016 will also support MSC and ASC to promote certified seafood within Brazil and promote sustainable education. The MOUs remain in effect until June 1, 2017.

Green Operations Award 2013 – Shortlist announced! | Go Group

Green Operations Award 2013 – Shortlist announced! | Go Group | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The GO Award jury had a meeting at the most appropriate place for this which was this year’s GreenEvents Europe conference. They decided on the next steps for the Green Operations Award which is the green category for the  European Festival Awards presented by GO Group and Yourope.

The short lists for the European Festival Awards have been announced today (mon dec 9th). While categories from best small to best major festival, anthem of the year or best line-up have been selected by a combination of public choice and jury vote the Green Operations Award’s nominees and winner are chosen by an independent jury of experts including last year’s winner We Love Green Festival (FRA).

Jury member Jacob Bilabel (Go Group co-founder / Green Music Initiative) said: “This year’s Green Operations Award shortlist should have been much longer with so many innovative trailblazers from all over Europe making it hard not to award all of them for doing things smarter and greener.  The chosen festivals represent state of the art approaches to the most pressing issues in live entertainment for others to follow.”

Okay, everybody, let’s GO! The shortlist for the Green Operations Award 2013 reads like this – with some quotes from the jury discussion:

Bestival (UK) – “They began a big change, they lauch severals actions always with humor and joyfull spirit. Little by little they will change the green logistic of their festival.”

Fusion (GER) – “Sustainability’s best kept secret. Doing things smarter and greener from their early days on without calling it that way … putting so much effort and love into their productions … clearly leading the way in thinking behind green.”

Rock For People (CZ) – “…being one of the most important festivals in the eastern countries it is a true spearhead for the area. Exceptional is the waste management system and social awareness.”

Tollwood Festival (GER) – “Tollwood is a giant. Being a month long urban cultural experience with two editions (summer and winter) it differs from the weekenders and uses its circumstances exceptionally. Know-how and awareness are on a top level.”

Way Out West (SWE) – “The festival is presenting a terrific sustainability approach on a triple bottom line. Absolutely remarkable: 2nd year WOW was a 100% vegetarian festival.”
