ADELAIDE CONVENTION CENTRE RECEIVES EARTHCHECK GOLD CERTIFICATION | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) has achieved EarthCheck's Gold Certification. EarthCheck, run by environmental advocacy group EC3 Global, is an environmental best practice programme used by convention centres, and travel and tourism organisations around the world.

The centre's Gold Certification follows the venue achieving five years of continuous silver certification and significantly reducing its environmental footprint. During this period, the centre became the first convention centre to use earthworms to recycle its organic waste, reduced its gas consumption by more than eight per cent, reduced water consumption by 10.7 per cent and reused or recycled 90 per cent of its exhibition waste.

This wavy Expo pavilion will eat greenhouse gas in 2015 | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Remember how exciting it was when we first saw pictures of Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates. Masdar is the futuristic terra-cotta curvy buildings designed by Foster & Partners? Well, the same design team is behind the United Arab Emirate’s solar-powered 2015 Milan Expo Pavilion and it features a host of groundbreaking technology.

“We are very proud to be chosen again to create the national pavilion for the UAE,” stated Norman Foster. “Our challenge has been to design for two climates – to create a naturally cool, comfortable space for visitors in Milan, while considering the pavilion’s ultimate reconstruction in the Emirates, where there is a need to provide shade from the intense sun.”

The requisite press releases have been issued proclaiming the uber green-ness of the upcoming Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in my home state ofNew Jersey.

Indeed, back in 2009, the venue was dubbed the “Greenest Stadium in the NFL” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It even uses solar power (about 1,350 panels) to generate the electricity for the programmable LED light display across the top of the stadium.

The green building community is rooting for the Eagles this NFL post season

The green building community is rooting for the Eagles this NFL post season | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The sports industry is a powerful catalyst for social transformation, and the Eagles are leveraging the opportunity to advance the green building movement. A few of the most robust sustainability initiatives at the Linc include:

  • Committing to improving energy efficiency<em>the recent installation of solar panels and wind turbines places the stadium 32% above the national average in terms of energy efficiency.

  • Partnering with Aramark to create  a green cleaning program<em>72% of their cleaning purchases meet LEED criteria.

  • Purchasing sustainable or compostable products, like serviceware and paper, for over 82% of ongoing consumable materials.

  • Engaging fans through clever signage at the stadium and information and tips available online.

  • Sorting waste before being sent offsite for recycling, composting or incinerating. The Eagles have a 99% landfill diversion rate, with over 86% being recycled or composted.

So, if your team didn’t make the cut, give some thought to an organization that is fostering a healthier, happier and more productive environment—on and off the field.

Venues going green - Exhibition News

Venues going green - Exhibition News | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The UK events industry took a key role on sustainable management practices when it launched the British Standard 8901 in late 2007. Prompted by the London Olympics and the Government’s push to be seen as environmental and cultural leaders, BS 8901 was designed to give organisers, venues and suppliers a means of delivering events more sustainably through management strategies, evaluation, reporting, communication and training.

Since then a number of venues have embraced environmental standards which aim to improve sustainability awareness and give event organisers, venues and suppliers a way of adhering to sustainable practices. Other standards have been taken up by the industry – all variations on the theme of more sustainable event management.

Sustainable Event Alliance's insight:

A nice profile of four venues in the UK that have put sustainability initiatives in place.

Guess What San Francisco Is Banning Now?

Guess What San Francisco Is Banning Now? | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it
San Francisco may implement one of the strictest bottled water bans in the country if the Board of Supervisors approves a proposal to ban its sale on public property.
Sustainable Event Alliance's insight:

Great news for events. The Bay area has some of the best resources we've seen for events, produced by local government, including requirements for events to meet strict (and awesome!) waste requirements for events over a certain size and type. This city wide ban will mean all events in the region will also become bottled-water free. We look forward to seeing the result and implications and development of models that all events (or even cities) could follow. Take Back The Tap is an excellent campaign also running in this region, as part of Food & Water Watch. Check it out too.

Hotel 'walks the walk' when it comes to green issues - Western Morning News

Hotel 'walks the walk' when it comes to green issues - Western Morning News | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

“Sustainability is a really crap word,” says Nick Waddington the manager of Trenython Manor, a spa and holiday resort near Fowey which has carved out an award-winning reputation for its environmental policies.

At the WMN Business Awards, in November, judges commended the hotel, which was built in 1872, for the way it has gone above and beyond in order to put the environmental agenda at the heart of its operations.

When the resort first started looking at its environmental footprint, Mr Waddington concedes that it was with a view to winning a green tourism award. But it has since evolved into something of a passion for all staff that has become an integral part of the business.

Thinking about Special Events and Composting - North East Recycling Council

It’s that time of year again—time to consider implementing composting at your special event.

Why special event composting?
Virtually all communities—from small towns to large cities—have special events. Whether a block party or music festival, events offer a perfect opportunity for hands-on education about composting. Special events present a microcosm of our society. People gather, they do activities together, and they generate waste. As much as half (or more) of the special event waste stream is compostable.
Composting can be successful at virtually any type of special event. Events frequently offer recycling, a very laudable undertaking. However, taking that next step—to implement collection of compostables—often seems daunting.
Admittedly, the tasks to implementing successful event composting are often unfamiliar and can be challenging—finding a hauler, convincing vendors to only use compostable service ware, and securing more volunteers. Composting at special events doesn’t usually happen without extremely dedicated organizers or outside “intervention” from solid waste experts…and, often both!

Carbon Neutral World Cup? Green Stadiums? Really?

Carbon Neutral World Cup? Green Stadiums? Really? | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Fancy pictures of green stadiums have been fast to hit the media since FIFA’s decision to give the 2022 soccer World Cup to Qatar was published. FIFA also announced that Brazil (2014), Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022) will have to satisfy green building certificate requirements when putting up new stadiums. Looking at the carbon footprint of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup, however, you learn that the stadiums only accounted for 1.1 percent of the event’s carbon footprint (0.6% for construction and renovation, 0.5% for energy use during the event). Hence, it is clear that better stadium design will only play a marginal role in the effort to significantly reduce the event’s overall emissions. But what would the effective greening of mega events look like? Is it possible at all? In this article, I analyze the carbon emissions of past events in detail, introduce you to the upcoming ones and discuss them all critically.
