What can the Olympics do for the city, not the city for the Olympics.

What can the Olympics do for the city, not the city for the Olympics. | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

The prospect of hosting an Olympic Games will always split the opinion of a city’s inhabitants. Many will see it as an investment. A chance to improve surrounding infrastructure and gain significant exposure. Think London, and how the 2012 Games proved to be the catalyst for the complete transformation of an unloved, neglected and a frankly uninhabitable patch of the UK’s capital.

It's been a busy 2018 for the IOC sustainability team, with reports, publications and strategies unveiled. Marie Sallois and Michelle Lemaitre talk to Sports Sustainability Journal.

UKAS to create ISO 20121 Accreditation scheme

UKAS to create ISO 20121 Accreditation scheme   | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

Great news that UKAS is developing accreditation for the certification of ISO 20121.

This means that certifying bodies will be able to become accredited to certify ISO 20121 - and with this comes prescribed auditing process.

This is important as currently when events apply for third-party audits with certifying bodies, there is no consistency and wildly ranging approaches, and consequently costs to audit.

An accreditation scheme will work to streamline this and offer guidance or requirements on conducting third-party audits on ISO 20121.

An integral part of this scheme is reinforcing the requirement for certifying bodies to ensure the skills and competencies needed to conduct a rigorous and effective audit in events/sustainability are included in the auditing team. This includes ensuring the certifying bodies meet the competencies detailed in the very long entitled:

ISO/IEC 17021: 2015 (Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems) and ISO/IEC TS 17021-4 (Competence requirements for auditing and certification of event sustainability management systems).

More details on competency requirements in auditing ISO 21021 can be found here:

https://sustainable-event-alliance.org/iso-20121-auditor-competency/

Top 10 branded plastic pollution revealed by clean up audit

Top 10 branded plastic pollution revealed by clean up audit | Sustainable Events News | Scoop.it

In 2018 individuals and organisations took action to hold corporations accountable for the plastic pollution they force into the marketplace through unnecessary, problematic and excessive throwaway packaging and materials. Break Free From plastic member organisations engaged nearly 10 000 volunteers in 239 cleanups in 42 countries on 6 continents, collecting over 187 851 pieces of plastic pollution.

By adding 'brand audits' to the cleanups, thousands of parent companies were represented in the log. Their analysis reveals the Top Polluters as:

Coca Cola
PepsiCo
Nestle
Danone
Mondelez International
Procter and Gamble
Unilever
Perfetti van Melle
Mars Incorporated
Colgate Palmolive

The top three accounted for 14% of the branded plastic pollution found.

What is heartening is many of these brands realise they must take direct action in producer responsibility of the products they sell in disposable packaging, into markets where no collection system is in place. Reports like this one can only help to accelerate action by producers, government and communities.
