As New Delhi’s pollution crisis persists, so does widespread public denial and complacency

As New Delhi’s pollution crisis persists, so does widespread public denial and complacency | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
In early November, there was no escaping the fact New Delhi was facing a public health crisis. The city’s Air Quality Index, by some readings, soared as high as the maximum, 999. Schools were closed, questions of governmental competency were raised and high-level meetings were convened. Conditions have improved, but remain far from healthy. But you wouldn’t know it by observing daily life.

Welcome to my curation site for the emerging science of sustainability.

Here you will find an array of stories, examples, relevant cautionary tales, and data related to our hunt for a more sustainable economy with a reduced ecological footprint.  While my students, colleagues and I are interested in all aspects of sustainability, these pages have an historc emphasis on:

- human population growth rates/demography

- product design/construction, especially:

    - triple bottomline

    - life cycle analyses (LCA)

    - sustainable supply chains

 - carbon footprints (especially carbon "finprints" of seafood)

 - food production/distribution systems

 - energy production/storage systems, especially:

    - dams and flow diversions

    - wind turbines

    - tidal power

    - solar panel efficiency/material advances

How One Company Used Data to Create Sustainable Take-out Food Packaging

How One Company Used Data to Create Sustainable Take-out Food Packaging | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it

Digital technology has made it commercially possible for companies to offer an alternative, more sustainable, and deposit-free recyclable packaging system for take-out food. Suppliers rent their packages to restaurants and end users simply pick up their desired take-out and then return the packaging within a specified period free of charge. The restaurant cleans the used packaging and then reuses it. This article explores how one of the pioneers of this new approach, the German company Vytal, makes the new system work and offer five lessons from its experience.

Traditional food packaging and delivery faces a serious sustainability problem. Consumer beverage packaging accounts for between up to 48% in urban solid waste and up to 26% of marine garbage, and the ineffectiveness of traditional recycling and reuse schemes via cash deposits that lead to perceived higher prices, are cumbersome to handle for food providers, and do not incentivize customers to return containers quickly or at all.

California Takes Leading Edge on Climate Laws. Others Could Follow.

California Takes Leading Edge on Climate Laws. Others Could Follow. | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
California has enacted an ambitious package of legislation to aggressively combat the climate crisis — a bold move by the world’s fifth-largest economy that could inspire action in other states.

Three years into a drought that is exacerbating wildfires and forcing limits on water consumption, California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom recently signed bills that will slash the state’s carbon emissions, protect vulnerable communities by banning new oil extraction close by and create a two-decade pathway to a 100% clean energy electrical grid.

In addition to the new laws, California legislators approved $54 billion in climate spending over the next five years, including investments in electric vehicles, drought resilience and public transportation using the state’s budget surplus.

Tesla explains its approach to sourcing lithium, nickel, and cobalt directly from mines in impressive detail

Tesla explains its approach to sourcing lithium, nickel, and cobalt directly from mines in impressive detail | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Tesla released interesting and rare details about its approach to sourcing lithium, nickel, and cobalt directly from mines instead of through its cell suppliers. This approach is going to be critical as companies fight to secure those minerals for battery production to support electric vehicle growth.

While Tesla sources the vast majority of its battery cells from suppliers, it actually sources a large part of the materials used to build those batteries directly from mines.

This approach enables Tesla to have direct relationships with miners of critical minerals and helps secure supply while allowing the company to monitor quality closely and ensure responsible environmental and social sourcing.

Just 2% of firms achieve top marks for green reporting

Placing environmental factors at the heart of procurement strategies is “vital” for companies to remain relevant, according to CDP.

CDP, which helps companies disclose environmental impacts, said businesses must focus on supply chains after research found almost 17,000 firms worldwide (worth $21tn) failed to disclose data.

Sonya Bhonsle, global head of value chains & regional director of corporations told Supply Management: “Addressing environmental impact through supply chain engagement is vital for companies to remain competitive and resilient in the face of a changing planet, society and economy.

“With supply chain emissions being 11.4 times higher than operational emissions, it is clear that managing the direct environmental impact of a company’s operations is no longer enough. Businesses must put the spotlight on – and engage – their supply chains.

LG Energy solution secures lithium supply chain in North America

LG Energy solution secures lithium supply chain in North America | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
Carbon-conscious mining company Snow Lake Lithium and battery production specialist LG Energy Solution announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a domestic supply chain of lithium in North America. When Snow Lake’s lithium mining operation gets up and running in 2025, it plans to supply LG with the precious Earth material essential to current EV battery chemistry. This domestic supply chain could help several automakers qualify for US federal tax credits as well.

Snow Lake Resources Ltd. ($LTIM) is a publicly traded mining company looking to source precious battery materials in new and more sustainable ways. The company has already made a commitment to provide completely traceable, carbon-neutral, and zero harm lithium to the EV and battery market in North America by utilizing hydroelectric power and zero emission mining machinery

This has been way too long a time in coming.  While this step would be progress, we really need a closed loop economy which considers material and energy streams beyond plastic/hydrocarbons.
Gizelle K Monicco's comment, April 19, 2022 12:19 PM
As unfortunate as it is, seeing overflowing trashcans and just pure trash almost everywhere is CA is very common. Living in Los Angeles, by downtown, I can say that I see my daily share of trash almost everywhere I look, and a lot of it is plastic bottles or plastic products. We can definitely reduce that

Welsh Firms Terminate Contracts with Suppliers Who Don’t Meet Sustainable Standards

Welsh Firms Terminate Contracts with Suppliers Who Don’t Meet Sustainable Standards | Sustainability Science | Scoop.it
One in five (21%) retailers in Wales have cancelled contracts with suppliers across the last 12 months who don’t meet stringent ethical and sustainable standards, new research reveals.

The report out today from Barclays Corporate Banking – Reshaping retail: how ethics and sustainability are changing retail’s ecosystem – shows the pandemic and an increasing focus on Environment, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) are shifting business priorities. In a study of more than 300 retail decision makers,51% in Wales say sustainability is more important now than it was two years ago and 49% say the same about ethical standards.

Additionally, 63% of retailers in Wales think that a long-term strategy to improve their ethical and sustainable credentials is more important than overcoming short-term supply chain disruption. On average, retail businesses with more than 10 staff are investing £504,000 per year to improve their own footprints.
