Tony Palmeri's curator insight, October 24, 2015 12:14 PM

I chose this article because it made me reflect on the different leadership that I've experienced and it made me contemplate if any were truly "transformational". The article confesses that in many instances, transformational leadership is not desired, However, in the context of education, we seek these types of leaders. Regardless, in my opinion, most leadership (at the building level) is not transformational. I certainly hope that it accounts for more that 8% of those in educational leadership roles.

I think we all have elements of many styles, one being dominant and where we are most comfortable. You can also flex depending on your function and expected role.

If Culture eats Strategy for breakfast - Let's make it a balanced meal

If Culture eats Strategy for breakfast - Let's make it a balanced meal | Strategic Leadership and Management Consulting | Scoop.it
As it stands, breakfast really isn’t a bad analogy.  There seem to be as many ‘brands’ of culture as there are breakfast cereals.  Are you hoping to describe your organizational culture as Irresistible?  Humanistic?  Purposeful?  Happy?  …Some other (mostly) ‘people-centered’ word?  Or, would you say Innovative? Customer Service?  LEAN?  Collaborative? …Another (sort of) ‘process-oriented’ description?  Well, they all sound pretty good to me.  And, of course, really, really important.  Because, as Drucker points out – “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”.

The caveat?  That goes for whatever your culture is, at any moment.  So, then, what do we do if any part of our culture is less than ideal?  [Please, please don’t say culture change…  Because if we aren’t there in the first place, then what are we changing?]

Three Ways To Reframe A Problem To Find An Innovative Solution

Three Ways To Reframe A Problem To Find An Innovative Solution | Strategic Leadership and Management Consulting | Scoop.it

Reframing a problem helps you see it as an opportunity, and Seelig offers three techniques for finding innovative solutions:

1. Rethink The Question

Start by questioning the question you’re asking in the first place, says Seelig. "Your answer is baked into your question," she says.

Before you start brainstorming, Seelig suggests you start "frame-storming": brainstorming around the question you will pose to find solutions. For example, if you’re asking, "How should we plan a birthday party for David?" you’re assuming it’s a party. If you change your question to, "How can we make David’s day memorable?" or "How can we make David’s day special?" you will find different sets of solutions.

Maggie Lawlor's curator insight, September 11, 2015 2:45 AM

To really make this work, add a dose of people who DON'T think like you - those you regularly disagree with, or wonder what planet they are on.  The follow these three techniques and stay open to all the ideas generated.

Ian Harris's curator insight, October 10, 2015 1:50 AM

Brain fodder!

Nancy Barnett's curator insight, October 14, 2015 10:36 AM

Bob Hogg's curator insight, July 22, 2015 12:06 PM

Wise words here from Jay Henderson, Director of Strategy at IBM:

“The challenge for marketers is doing the things that they know customers want...

...then marketers have to balance [those customer wants] with the business needs.”

And a challenge it certainly is - sadly, I often hear from marketer clients about the difficulties they have in persuading their company boards to take such an approach.
