I've always wondered how is it possible that an entire nation and beyond (Germany) wasn't aware of the Jewish persecution during the WW2 years or, if they were, that they did nothing to stop it.

Very often I find myself looking for a way to express that I'm amazed, surprised, disappointed, annoyed, etc., but the only words I can come up with are:

Let's say there are two people and a sandwich. They want to share the sandwich, but they don't trust each other. However, they found the way how both of them will have a lunch without feeling deceived: One of them will cut the sandwich in two halves, and another will choose which half will be his. Fair, right?
The problem is: Is there such mechanism for three people and a sandwich?

Recently there has been a high profile case in the UK concerning a religious christian couple who own a hotel. Due to their personal religious beliefs their policy was to refuse a room to couples who were not married. They refused a 'married' homosexual couple a room on the grounds that they were not of the same 'orientation', which went against their religious values. They said that it would feel wrong to allow it and that they would feel more trepidation answering to God than the justice system.

There is a key distinction between enabling a sin -- which is a very serious problem vs. simply assisting a sin. In virtually all cases that come up today, these are questions of assisting rather than enabling. Do I really think this couple will sin any less if I refuse them the room? Generally, for non-Jews or non-observant Jews, we say it's best to avoid assisting if reasonably possible, but the letter of the law is that it's permissible. (I.e. you shouldn't get yourself sued over it.) Rabbi Michael Broyde has observed that evangelical Christians don't accept this distinction of assisting vs. enabling; we have a very old, nuanced, and profound religion, and we do.

The balloon doesn't know and doesn't care if the acceleration is from gravity or from the acceleration of the car; it just tries to move in the direction it naturally moves, namely, against the direction of the acceleration.

I've recently heard a riddle, which looks quite simple, but I can't solve it :
The girl thinks of a number which is 1, 2, or 3
The boy then asks just 1 question about the number
The girl can only answer "Yes", "No", or "I don't know"
And after the girl answers it, he knows what the number is.
What is the question?
Note: girl is professional in maths and knows EVERYTHING about these three numbers

When used as a verb, the word appropriate means "to take (something) for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission". Basically, stealing.

I saw several posts around the web of people apparently complaining about a hosted VPS unexpectedly killing processes because they used too much RAM.

Once the process has taken all the RAM, it will also fill up the disk because it is writing to swap and I am left with no more RAM and no more space to swap into (people tend to limit swap to a dedicated partition rather than a swapfile for exactly that reason). That's where the OOM killer comes in and starts killing processes.

I have read a book that tries to delve into this phenomenon: James Waller's Becomming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing (at the moment, wikipedia claims this is the standard college textbook on the subject). His basic thesis is that under the right circumstances most (not all, but most) ordinary people will quite willingly participate in mass evil of this kind. Passively sure, but even actively, if called upon to do so.
