Why Did Old-Time Announcers Talk That Way? How The Technology of The Times Created The Timeless Radio Voice | DNews

Why Did Old-Time Announcers Talk That Way? How The Technology of The Times Created The Timeless Radio Voice | DNews | Sports Broadcasting | Scoop.it

In the realm of baseball broadcasting, maybe the single most famous call in the history of the game happened on Oct. 3, 1951, when New York Giants outfielder Bobby Thompson hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Known as "The Shot Heard 'Round the World," the home run capped a historic comeback by Giants over their longtime rivals and inspired the famous radio call by Giants broadcaster Russ Hodges:

"There's a long drive … it's gonna be, I believe … The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!"

Very cool article which explains why the sound of old baseball games on the radio was so distinctive, and shaped by the technology of its time; and how the introduction of stereo sound changed the way we actually hear baseball games, literally.

We take one exception with the article however...despite the assertions of the assistant professor at Duke, no acting schools or broadcast training programs teach the "Transatlantic" style of speech nowadays. The only notable persons who currently use this accent are Kathleen Turner and Madonna, and neither one of them has ever announced a major league baseball game to our knowledge.

The only broadcaster who truly retains the unique "timeless," quality to his delivery is the legendary Dodgers' announcer, Vin Scully, and that's because he actually started broadcasting in the early 1950's. San Francisco Giants announcer, Jon Miller, is probably the most distinctive-sounding announcer who came up in the age of stereo, but we find that most announcers nowadays don't sound timeless; just very bland, homogeneous and interchangeable. (Sorry, Joe Buck, you're no Vin Scully.)
