I love this "beautiful limitations" concept. The Spanish bagpipes have many beautiful limitations yet even in my own playing I dive into them and carve out as much beauty and potential as I can. The better I get, the more those limitations seem to disappear...

Gaitero (Spanish piper) Arturo Miguel Perez

Gaitero (Spanish piper) Arturo Miguel Perez | Spanish Bagpipes Today | Scoop.it

"In Cuba today there is a resurgence of the gaita tradition. Gaita is the Spanish word for bagpipe. The Galicians and Asturians of Northern Spain were the dominate immigrant groups in Cuba at the turn of the 20th century. When they settled in Cuba, they imported their musical and dance traditions."

SpanishBagpipes's insight:

What a small Spanish bagpipe world... it mentions here that Xuacu Amieva, an Asturian gaita player, is a mentor to Arturo. I met Xuacu a few years ago and I actaully learned how to play the pipes on a set of bagpipes formerly owned by him! Xuacu has devoted so much of his life and music career to help spread the Spanish bagpipe legacy. Be sure to check him out at his website: http://www.xuacuamieva.net/english/index.htm

Walking Tour of Galician/Asturian/Irish Havana, Cuba

Walking Tour of Galician/Asturian/Irish Havana, Cuba | Spanish Bagpipes Today | Scoop.it

"...The tradition of folk music and dance from Asturias and Galicia was exported to the Spanish colony of Cuba. The gaita is a Spanish bagpipe and today in Havana there are many gaita players and dance groups which preserve the tradition of their celtic ancestors..."

SpanishBagpipes's insight:

In a similar way that the British Isles "exported" the Scottish bagpipe around the world as the UK built its empire, so also Spain, from Galicia and Asturias, exported its own bagpipes to places like Cuba.
