Kevin Carr's comment, September 6, 2013 11:56 PM
We had a grand time - learned new repertoire from the playing of Juan Bellou Mallou, one of the last gaiteiros in Santiago who spent his musical life playing the old way - his music woven in to the fabric of daily life. We heard anecdotes about his life. We learned something about the requinta - the small flute played in Ulla region with gaitas. We played a lot of music, ate a lot of galician food and had a ball. Capped it all off with a presentation at the Freight and Salvage coffeehouse in Berkeley. Here is a link to a youtube video - apologies for the sound quality - the gaitas were a bit too much for the poor camera. Thanks to Casey Burns for music and camera work, and to Alexandre 'Cano' Cadarso for being our professor.

Santiago de Compostela has a celtic background ... go figure!
SpanishBagpipes's insight:

It's always fun to "rediscover" the existence of Spanish bagpipes and Celtic culture in Spain through other people's eyes. Joshua Santospirito is one such explorerer who recently discovered one of Galicia's hidden treasures and sketched it out. I love the shadow of the piper and the simple detail of the umbrella. It's a rainy, cool day and the sounds of the pipes echo off the archways with the quieter "drone" of the rain in the background...

Has anyone else out there done any drawings/paintings/sketches of Galician/Asturian bagpipes?

Cristina Pato: Galician-Tinged Bagpipes, In The Studio

Cristina Pato: Galician-Tinged Bagpipes, In The Studio | Spanish Bagpipes Today | Scoop.it
