How Spotify’s Continued Expansion Is Killing Niche Music Genres | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
While the rise of streaming is, in many ways, responsible for the music industry's salvation, the vast majority of content streamed on platforms like Spotify generally tends to lean towards the pop/hip hop spectrum. As Thomas Steffens here explains could be bad news for more niche music genres lik
Leonel Lopez Rivera's curator insight, January 26, 2020 6:27 PM
I think Spotify is killing the genres that they want because most of the artists that they are promoting are of  pop and hip-hop genres than other genres. I think it's because those artist are investing a lot of money on promotions. I use Spotify and my experience is that most of the promotions are from pop artists. This is good for pop artists, but what will happen to music in the future? Where will the musical variety be?

My opinion on topic is a little bias. I believe that the money made in the music industry has diminished significantly. The money isn’t the same in the music industry simply because it’s taking more people to produce the tracks and more people are in the making. I believe that even though this scoop may be a creditable one I believe it could’ve been a little more accurate.

I think that youtube can easily compete in the music streaming service. Youtube already has a large amount of users and offering ad free music and videos is hard to pass up for any customer. Many music fans also enjoy music videos and can watch them on youtube ad free. This is where I feel Youtube has an edge.

This article seemed to be a credible source based on the provided statistics of the the topic. This article is very interesting to me because it made me wonder if CDs are completely out of the question now. CDs seem more and more like a lost era now I would've never thought vinyl would pass CDs. Another thing I thought was interesting was the fact the Hip Hop/R&B genre had more artist in the top 10 most streamed list than any other genre. Lastly what stood out for me was the fact that music streaming accounted for 54% of audio consumption. This article is from 2018 so I can only imagine what it is like now.

Its really impressive how important it is to cover yourself correctly. Make sure that as an artist you are really making what you deserve. Online royalties can really make or break someones career because most artist post all their music online first before performing for an open mic night. This gives every one the chance to earn honestly. Its wonderful that IMPEL can achieve such goals for today's independent songwriters and publishers.

Sony Music Masterworks Acquires Soundtrack Label Milan Records

Sony Music Masterworks Acquires Soundtrack Label Milan Records | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

Sony Music Masterworks announced it has acquired Milan Records, an international leader in film and television scores and soundtracks.  Founded over 40 years ago by Emmanuel Chamboredon, Milan Records has released the soundtracks to renowned and critically acclaimed classics such as DivaGhostBackdraftBenny & Joon as well as recent hits including The Revenant, Deadpool, Chef, Under The Skin, Birdman, Midsommar and Hereditary.  As part of this transaction, Sony Music Masterworks also acquires Milan’s sister label Jade, which comprises more than 500 liturgical and classical albums from across the globe.  Under the agreement, JC Chamboredon, Senior Vice President, Milan Records and son of Emmanuel Chamboredon, will continue to run Milan Records, reporting to Mark Cavell, Sony Music Masterworks U.S. Label Head and COO International.

This agreement enhances Sony Music Masterworks’ presence in the film, television and gaming soundtrack business and provides Milan Records with stronger and more unified global distribution, marketing and promotion resources. Milan Records boasts an impressive catalogue of film and television soundtracks as well as independent artist releases and works with some of today’s most prominent filmmakers including Nicolas Winding Refn, Gaspar Noé and Alejandro González Iñárritu as well as award-winning composer and artist Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Mark Cavell stated, “The acquisition of Milan Records, under the leadership of JC, underscores our commitment to soundtracks, further developing important relationships on the West Coast with both film studios and composers. I am delighted to welcome Milan Records to Sony Music Masterworks and look forward to bringing its projects, artists and unique identity to a global audience.”

JC Chamboredon stated, “I have been incredibly fortunate to watch my father, Emmanuel Chamboredon, run Milan Records for the past 30 years.  Witnessing his hard work through my young eyes was the most formative schooling in music and business I could have ever had.  I am thrilled that 40 years following its foundation, Milan Records will now join the Sony Music Masterworks family.  It was evident to both Emmanuel and me that Mark Cavell clearly understands what has always made Milan Records a special label.  I am honored to be able to build upon what my father started and bring Milan Records to the next level in this new and exciting time for soundtracks.”

Emmanuel Chamboredon stated, “My dream was to ensure that Milan Records and Jade, both of which I started 41 years ago, would continue once I hung up my gloves.  Today that dream has come true. Sony Music Masterworks is the ideal home for Milan and Jade, under the experienced leadership of my son JC and the label’s incredible team.  I am very grateful to Mark Cavell, who showed lots of energy and imagination in carving out the right place for Milan and Jade at Sony Music Masterworks.”

Sony Music Masterworks will begin working with Milan Records immediately on upcoming releases including soundtracks to films including The Farewell, The Lighthouse, La Belle ÉpoqueAtlantics as well as the hit HBO series Succession.

Spotify Lets Indie Artists Upload Music Direct, Bypassing Distributors | Hollywood Reporter | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
Beginning today (Sept. 20), Spotify will begin allowing a select group of independent artists the ability to upload their music directly onto the streaming platform through their Spotify For Artists account, the company announced.
Scottie White's curator insight, April 26, 2020 10:58 PM
Upload your music instantly as a independent artist on Spotify.  with the right tools you can achieve major label status with the new ways to get your music and content to the masses.

Billboard.com is a reliable source of information for the Audio arts/ music industry.
Danielle Green's curator insight, September 19, 2021 6:54 PM

Spotify doing this removes any potential distribution barriers between the artists and their fans. I'm not sure this function is still in place in 2021 but I imagine that when it came out, it made uploading music more convenient than before. I also like that it did so without cutting into artists' pockets, allowing them to still receive 100% royalties just as they would if they were using a middleman distributor like DistroKid.

*Billboard was founded in 1894 and began focusing on the entertainment and music industry in the early 20th century. It has been one of the industry's most well-known publications ever since.  Billboard is especially known for its music ranking lists like Hot 100 and Billboard 200 and most musicians have aimed to land on it.  This is a trustworthy source.

Jeremy Todd McConnaha's curator insight, April 24, 2022 11:44 PM
I personally use this as an indecent artist and it is a great tool Spotify is offering. I see the need for major labels still in some aspects, mostly from a financial front… however, Spotify is offering tips to artists in this as well and stats to see where your market is and what the demographic is. Such a valuable tool.

The downfall if this is that the consumers could be over saturated with material and this could eventually fall apart for certain independent artists, or if the grind becomes more than the gain is worth.
