SoundWorks Collection: The Sound & Music of John Carter

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes "John Carter"--a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). "John Carter" is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

Supervising Sound Editor Jonathan Null and Composer Michael Giacchino share with the SoundWorks Collection their extensive work bringing to life the planet of Barsoom.

Listen to a New Piece of Michael Giacchino’s Score for ‘John Carter’ | /Film

Listen to a New Piece of Michael Giacchino’s Score for ‘John Carter’ | /Film | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
Disney’s John Carter, the adaptation of A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, opens on March 9. The film is by former Pixar director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) and features Taylor Kitsch as a civil war veteran transported to Mars, where he finds himself in the midst of a new conflict.

We’ve seen trailers and images from the movie, and I still don’t know quite what to expect. Or, rather, I’m not sure how much to expect. The story is great, but I can’t tell if the movie is going to be quite the vision of Burroughs’ novel that I’d like it to be. I do expect the score will be good, at least, as it is by the reliable Michael Giacchino. Listen to three tracks below.
