Christopher Coleman's insight:

Amazing.  Few, if any, will ever make their living off of streaming music sites ... save the publishers and the streaming sites themselves. Props to Zoe Keating for being so transparent.  It will benefit many ... artists.

Get Ready For The Streaming-Music Die-Off

Get Ready For The Streaming-Music Die-Off | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

Streaming music gets one thing right. Services like Pandora, Rdio and Spotify are amazing for the consumer, and in that singular way, the music industry hasn’t been better in … probably ever.

At long last, we have the celestial jukebox we dreamed of a decade and a half ago. Nearly any song is at our fingertips in seconds and that privilege costs far less than what an album used to, if it costs anything at all.

This bubble of end-user bliss comes at the expense of almost everyone else, from artists right down to the people who pioneered the idea of renting music over the Web to begin with. How long can it last?

Top Streaming Consumer
Gage Wright's curator insight, December 6, 2015 7:36 PM

This website offered some interesting information on streaming music. However, it is now almost 2 years old since it was published the statistics and numbers provided are outdated. I think we need to find a happy medium between consumer convenience and demand and keeping music more personal and physical.

Trevor Gosnell's curator insight, December 17, 2019 2:12 AM
My opinion- The music industry isn't the world we dreamed of, sounds harder than people would imagine. You want to do what you enjoy, but you also want to make money while doing it. You see all these artists living well off and it makes you wonder how much work they're really putting into it. But like it said in a previous article that I read, you may not make money streaming but the concerts and shows is where you would make more in one night than you would 5 years streaming.

I think this is a credible source because the writer of this article, Taylor Hatmaker, is an author at ReadWrite. She explains in detail, with a graph, what artist really make and what percentages of the money made from the music goes to who.

Watch Out, Pandora: Apple’s Streaming Radio Service Could Launch In Early 2013 | TechCrunch

Watch Out, Pandora: Apple’s Streaming Radio Service Could Launch In Early 2013 | TechCrunch | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
According to a report out of Bloomberg, Apple may be working on a radio product to compete with Pandora.

Winston Mills's curator insight, July 15, 2013 11:33 PM

If Apple truly does decide to become a music streaming radio service, it could definitely be a major game changer. The article says, "it is expected to be the best internet radio ever," and I completely agree with that statement. Apple probably wouldn't have to abide by any licensing agreements with skipping songs, so that would make the listener or subscriber very happy. Again, if Apple does this, they will be number one, and very successful in this venture, as they are exceptionally successful in all things media driven.

Kyle Walker's curator insight, July 20, 2014 4:17 PM

Its interesting to see how iTunes will compete with Pandora. Letting the subscriber be able to skip songs continuously without stoping them is a big step forward in online radio. The article does not explain how money will get distributed. It kind of scares me to see how powerful this radio will be. It might even destroy digital downloads all together it says in the last paragraph.

Tiffani Tran's curator insight, November 7, 2014 5:51 PM

I don't think Pandora will be in competition with Apple's Streaming Radio because Pandora has been out way longer and is more known in my opinion. But Apple's Streaming Radio will probably be providing a little more than what Pandora has to offer. I honestly choose Pandora over Apple Streaming to explore my music and hearing new things than just what i know.

DRM died when Apple switched iTunes to unprotected downloads, right? Utterly wrong: music has never been more inflexible, protected, and non-transferrable. And for proof, here's a rundown of the padlocks installed by the largest music services in the world.

5 Things That Are Better Than Sharing Music Via Apple iOS 6 And iTunes - hypebot

5 Things That Are Better Than Sharing Music Via Apple iOS 6 And iTunes - hypebot | Soundtrack | Scoop.it

Apple announced a lot of cool stuff last week. Say what you will about the new iPhone (yes, it’s taller, and that’s okay) or that new Lightning dock connector (it’s going to be a huge pain, but Apple can do whatever it wants with its dock connectors, and it’s not like this is the first time it has upset everybody by changing its cable strategy), or even those EarPods, which took three years to make (yes, they’re better than the old ones, but no, they’re not as good as your $100-plus pair).

Mastered for iTunes – the saviour of great sound? | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
Apple’s new “Mastered for iTunes” has been causing quite a buzz recently – and causing lots of confusion.

I’m going to try and explain it all as clearly as I can.

[Update edit: I started out sceptical, but after new clues have been discovered about Apple's plans for "Mastered for iTunes", I'm actually very excited by the opportunity it presents - check out the "Stop Press" update at the end of this post.]

There are four five ways that the term “Mastered for iTunes” can be interpreted.
