Post Magazine - Scoring DIsney's 'Odd Life of Timothy Green'

Post Magazine - Scoring DIsney's 'Odd Life of Timothy Green' | Soundtrack | Scoop.it
Disney’s latest live action film The Odd Life of Timothy Green centers on a young couple struggling with infertility. In frustration, they bury a box in their backyard, listing all of the traits they could hope for in a child. To their surprise, their dreams are answered when a young boy arrives the next day, covered in mud having sprouted up from the soil.

Geoff Zanelli (www.geoffzanelli.com) was challenged with composing the score for The Odd Life of Timothy Green, which opened in theaters on August 15. Zanelli, who has worked from composer Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control facility since 1994, described the soundtrack as organic — no surprise considering the film’s storyline.

Emmy award-winning composer Geoff Zanelli shares with us his experiences working on some of the biggest blockbuster movies and discusses his new projects.

When we are literally four months into life, our ears work. Even before we are born, sound is our first gift from the world outside. In some people, recognition of that gift develops into an interesting career.

Geoff Zanelli is one of those people. He composes music for movies (The Odd Life of Timothy Greenand all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies), TV miniseries (Into the West and The Pacific), bands (Mest, Story of the Year) and singers (Robbie Williams, Pink, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell). Zanelli won an Emmy for Spielberg’s Into the West in 2006 and a nomination for The Pacific in 2010.

Emmy Award-winning composer, Geoff Zanelli, masterfully created the score for Disney’s upcoming fantasy drama directed by Peter Hedges, “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton, out in theaters August 15th. “Because this movie, in the words of Peter, is about what children can teach you if you let them, it would’ve been hard for me to get in touch with the film if I wasn’t a father.” Zanelli further explains how important being a father of a two year-old daughter was to writing a score for a film about parenthood. “It’s like method acting, or method composing,” he adds. “And this is the first thing of mine that my daughter has really responded to.” He explains how fatherhood has changed him, “Had you asked me five years ago if I could’ve written the score for this film, I would’ve said yes without really knowing that I actually couldn’t have. The fact that I’m a father has had a huge impact on the score that I wrote. Fatherhood has made me much more in tune.”
