We may stand in line to get our hands on the latest technology and watch as record stores close their doors as more and more music fans turn to iTunes and digital downloads instead of physical CDs, but there is still something about vinyl records that keep people coming back for more. While digital files are crisp and polished, it is almost impossible for a studio to duplicate the richness that comes from vinyl – plus those little imperfections and pops that come from listening to a record can sometimes be the best part. Even though CDs may seem like they are becoming a way of the past, there is a new trend coming forward and one that seems to be popping up more and more with soundtrack releases – the option to get these compilations on vintage vinyl.

Arbitrage focuses on the life of powerful businessman Robert Miller (Richard Gere), a man whose world is surrounded by rich mahogany, dollar signs, and the insides of town cars. His life is one you would expect for a man in his position, but Cliff Martinez takes a more unexpected route with his score, giving this stiff and almost antiquated environment some real texture and vibrancy. The juxtaposition of these classic settings with Martinez’s more modern, electronic sound helps create a palpable feeling of anxiety as you watch these cracks start to form on these perfect lives while a more kinetic and unsettling sound begins creeping in.

Geoff Barrow’s Invada imprint has announced its second limited reissue project with composer/one-time Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Cliff Martinez (Drive,Only God Forgives, Spring Breakers). Due out later this year on black and white vinyl with two different covers, the Solaris soundtrack was written for Stephen Soderbergh’s 2002 remake starring George Clooney and Natascha McElhone. According to a press release, the director—who first worked with Martinez on his breakthrough film Sex, Lies, and Videotape—said the score was crucial as he developed a 21st century take on Andrei Tarkovsky’s art-house classic.

The Attention You Keep Review by Richard Buxton 2011’s DRIVE was certainly a milestone in the career of composer CLIFF MARTINEZ. The playlist for Nicolas Winding Refn’s savagely smooth drama burst into musical circles beyond film scores with its criminally cool tones, raising the profile of MARTINEZ dramatically in the process. THE COMPANY YOU KEEP is unlikely to make such musical waves - largely due to the film itself - but it is another indication that CLIFF MARTINEZ is clearly molding his own niche within film scoring and is continually improving with each score.
