The American Youth Symphony’s (AYS) annual Hollywood Project concert, to be held on November 23 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, will honor composer James Horner and feature his score for Ron Howard’s Apollo 13. AYS Music Director, Carlos Izcaray will conduct the symphony in a live-to-picture performance of Horner’s entire Oscar®-nominated score. Tickets are $18, free for members, and can be reserved at aysymphony.org/tickets.

Started by AYS Board Member composer David Newman, this season’s Hollywood Project concert, Apollo 13 in Concert, will be the twelfth that AYS has produced. The Hollywood Project concerts have been widely praised for showcasing the technical prowess and musical maturity of the AYS orchestra, with Justin Craig of Film Score Monthly writing: “The American Youth Symphony stands high, mastering the challenge of performing film music with all its unconventional meters and rhythms. Don’t be deceived by the label of ‘youth’ orchestra; the AYS is the real deal.” Past concerts have featured works of several luminaries in the film industry including John Williams, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Michael Giacchino, and Alan Silvestri.

Hailed by critics and audiences alike, Universal Pictures’ Apollo 13 tells the incredible story of one of the most thrilling and suspenseful missions in the history of the American space program. Directed by Ron Howard and nominated for nine Academy Awards®, the film stars Tom Hanks,

Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton as astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise, who were selected to fly NASA’s third moon landing mission.

Having composed music for more than 130 film and television productions, James Horner was among the world’s most prolific and beloved film composers. He earned two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, eight additional Academy Award nominations, five additional Golden Globe nominations, and won six Grammy awards. Known for his stylistic diversity, his other film credits include Titanic, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind, and Braveheart just to name a few. Following Apollo 13 in Concert there will be an Apollo 13 themed dinner honoring the life and work of Horner, to be accepted on his behalf by his wife, Sara Horner. Dinner begins at 7:00 pm and reservations start at $450. Proceeds support the American Youth Symphony, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
