I was able to briefly borrow and test a preproduction Sony a7 camera along with the new Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.8, Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 55mm F1.8 and Sony 28-70mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS FE lenses. Unfortunately it wasn’t the a7R, in which I am more interested for the purposes of adapting rangefinder lenses. But this provided a good opportunity nonetheless to generate some images to help me (and hopefully also you) determine whether or not the a7 is a possible platform for rangefinder lenses...

A little over a decade ago, enthusiast photographers were clamoring for an affordable APS-C digital SLR. That dream has long since become a reality, but for some, the dream wasn't big enough. The good news is that Sony has now lowered the price of its full frame A7 camera to a much more affordable level and with that, your 20mm lens has the 20mm field of view again! I tested out the Pentax-M 20mm f4.

Life is all about compromises, but fans of full-frame and mirrorless cameras will be thrilled to hear that Sony has just removed a compromise we've long taken as an unfortunate fact of life. If you wanted a mirrorless camera, you had to live with -- at best -- an APS-C sensor. If you wanted a full-frame sensor, it had to come along with a bulky mirror box. There was no middle ground -- at least, not until now. With the simultaneously-launched, full-frame Sony A7R and A7 mirrorless cameras, the company has demolished the status quo.

Well, this is a pleasant surprise! Unless you already know this because you've been reading the rumour sites you'll be pleased to learn that Sony has just (Oct, 16, 2013) thrown the camera industry a bit of an aggressive curveball with the introduction of the Alpha 7 and Alpha 7R. An also new and fascinating compact, the RX10 was also introduced today.

I was able to spend a few days in early October with an A7R, and this is a brief hands-on report. The camera was pre-production and I had no raw software available, so I won't be commenting in any detail on image quality. But, given Sony's past excellence in sensor design there's little reason to imagine that it will be anything other than first-rate. It certainly appears to be, based on my informal testing so far.
