Four Pillars of a Meaningful Life That Could Be Part of Every Learning Community | MindShift | KQED News

Four Pillars of a Meaningful Life That Could Be Part of Every Learning Community | MindShift | KQED News | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
When Emily Esfahani Smith went to college and embarked on her adult life she thought the key to a happy life was success. She was looking for the perfect job, boyfriend and apartment. But the longer she chased the things she thought would make her happy, the more anxious and adrift she felt. So she decided to go to graduate school to study positive psychology and figure out once and for all what makes people happy. But what she learned was that many people feel hopeless, depressed and alone.

"There's an emptiness gnawing away at people and you don't have to be clinically depressed to feel it," Esfahani Smith said in a TED talk.

‘A network of infrastructures’: Exploring Public Libraries as Infrastructure By Louise Rondel, Laura Henneke and Dr Alice Corble –

‘A network of infrastructures’: Exploring Public Libraries as Infrastructure By Louise Rondel, Laura Henneke and Dr Alice Corble – | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
To mark one year of Infrastructural Explorations, this CUCR blog entry reflects on our latest Exploration, curated by Dr Alice Corble. Join us for the next Infrastructural Exploration on July 26th in Beckton, East London. To sign up and for more info click here. Since June 2018, Louise and Laura have been co-curating a series…
Doug Mirams's insight:

"Library as Infrastructure". Great further discussion which builds upon the library as platform conversation noted previously but now from sociologists rather than librarians.

"..the library as a network of integrated, mutually reinforcing, evolving infrastructures — in particular, architectural, technological, social, epistemological and ethical infrastructures — can help us better identify what roles we want our libraries to serve, and what we can reasonably expect of them. What ideas, values and social responsibilities can we scaffold within the library’s material systems — its walls and wires, shelves and servers?"

Attend their July 25 meeting, if you can -- I will have to keep my FOMO in check and follow along from Canada.

Doug Mirams's insight:

Twitter thread: "Can public institutions [eg public libraries] be platforms?" is the essence of the ideas I am pursuing. Some great quotes here from @rdlankes ("library as platform") who participated,

"Also, recently I’ve been thinking along the lines of the library a a movement - not something librarians build for a community, but the joint action (and advocacy) of the community around learning"

"That is a tension I wrestle with a lot. What unique value do librarians bring to the participatory culture. That’s where I come back to facilitation as a skill guided by values (we have a point of view) and grounded in learning/knowledge."

Just brilliant.

Handing Over Our Library Space to the Community

Handing Over Our Library Space to the Community | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
We have had some fabulous heart-wrenching, scary, wonderful moments being part of Fun Palaces. And a big part of that was letting go and handing over our library space to the community and saying it's yours, what would you like to do?
Doug Mirams's insight:

Best quote (it is a long one):

"The best things we do are the things where someone from the community has come in and said 'I have this idea ...' If we can go with it we will and the process of that idea 'becoming’ is the most raw, creative, owned, people-led thing. It's joyous to see.
And libraries, because we are a public space are a level field for people to come to and for us to discover creative solutions together. As Stella says ‘there is no austerity of brilliant people.’

Designing Libraries - Sustainable furnishings in Stockholm's Old Library

Designing Libraries - Sustainable furnishings in Stockholm's Old Library | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
Stockholm's National Museum reopened its doors in November 2018 following a five-year restoration by architecture firm Wingårdhs.
Doug Mirams's insight:

Just as libraries should collect and distribute local authors back into their communities, they should also support local industries and crafts. And it should be especially true to demonstrate new and innovative ways to furnish it's spaces. Stockholm's National Museum has done just that: "To mark the occasion, the institution asked five Swedish designers to work alongside 21 local manufacturers to produce furnishings that could decorate the museum's new rooms."

Social Capital for Libraries | Princh Library Blog

Social Capital for Libraries | Princh Library Blog | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
In this post, it is discussed how libraries can gain an advantage by growing and leveraging their network by improving their social capital.
Doug Mirams's insight:

Best quote from this post:

"“Unlike financial capital that depreciates with use, social capital actually grows the more it is used. Reach out with information about what libraries are doing and how they can be supported to do more. Reciprocity happens! No, it’s not simplistic thinking. What librarians make happen to others, they will help to make happen to libraries. However, when our intentions are solely to ‘use’ people to achieve what we want, it can backfire badly.”
