Residents seek to bring Little Basketball Libraries to more Eau Claire parks

Residents seek to bring Little Basketball Libraries to more Eau Claire parks | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it

Gavin Burke shoots over Conner Olafson last week at Boyd Park playground. The court has a Little Basketball Library of balls for people to borrow while at the park. Neighborhood groups are seeking to expand the concept to include more balls at more city parks.

Doug Mirams's insight:

The town that brought the "Little Sled Library" to Eau Claire's Seven Bumps Hills, expanded their Library of Things to include free basketballs at area courts. #IdeasWorthStealing

The Invention of Public Space Shows the City as a Product of Negotiation

Karen Kubey, an urbanist specializing in housing and health questions if the invention of Public Space is "Invented Or Agreed Upon?"
Doug Mirams's insight:

From the article:

"But Mariana Mogilevich’s new book upends this wisdom. The Invention of Public Space challenges the notion that the city’s open or free spaces amount to an “unalloyed, universal good” whose civic underpinnings can be traced to the ancient Athenian agora. It emends and dramatically condenses the historical trajectory of the titular spatial invention, dating it to the 1960s and 1970s, during the John Lindsay mayoral administration."

Doug Mirams's insight:

The University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) Child Care and Learning Centre won the 2021 Excellence Award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects for Small-Scale Public Landscapes.  And it was well deserved. Saying that it "sets an aspirational standard for children's outdoor spaces in Canada," I hope that the example it sets will start to appear in other parks, child care centres and public libraries.

10 Principles for Healthy Communities by Meg Wheatley | by Fabian Pfortmüller | Together Institute | Apr, 2021 | SocialLibrary | Scoop.it
One of the main questions we keep coming back to in our work is: what makes a community healthy? What allows a community to thrive in the long-term? How can it regenerate and sustain over time? As…
Doug Mirams's insight:

The principles are:

1. People support what they create.
2. People act responsibly when they care
3. Conversation is the way human beings have always thought
4. To change the conversation, change who is in it
5. Expect leaders to come from anywhere
6. Focusing on what is working gives us energy and creativity
7. The wisdom resides within us
8. Everything is a failure in the middle
9. Humans can handle anything as long as we’re together
10. Generosity, forgiveness and love

It’s a program four years in the making and a $20,000 grant the library received in partnership with Chattanooga Girls Rock was instrumental in making it happen.

TED Radio Hour | The Public Commons

How can we create public places that feel welcoming and safe for everyone? This hour, TED speakers examine our physical and digital spaces—how they run, who they serve, and how to make them better. Guests include community organizer Shari Davis, researcher Eli Pariser, Wikipedia Library founder Jake Orlowitz, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, and artist Matthew Mazzotta."

Doug Mirams's insight:

While this podcast is more than just about public libraries, I did geek out on the comments made early on by Shari Davis about public libraries, especially the example of Berkeley Public Library,

"Libraries are examples of these beautiful hubs that can take on the shape of whatever community that uses them really needs. And so this example of a library is exactly that."

Every librarian would love to hear their community say that back to them.

Mini Art Gallery Project (Art Gallery of Northumberland and Brighton Public Library)

Doug Mirams's insight:

Lovely community art project near my hometown. The Art Gallery of Northumberland (Cobourg, ON) has started the Mini Art Gallery Project at local area libraries (Brighton Public Library,  Cramaha Township Public Library/Colborne, and Port Hope Public Library) with the idea of sharing:

"Here’s how it works. Any time you come across a mini art gallery you have an opportunity to take a pieceleave a piece, or both. You just may find your new favourite local artist or, seeing what your neighbours are making might encourage you to break out of your bubble and make something new and unique! Get creative with your masterpiece. Within the walls of this gallery exp/erimentation and imperfection are welcomed."
