Can Robotics Teach Problem Solving to Students?

Can Robotics Teach Problem Solving to Students? | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

"Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential to success at university and in later life. However, the traditional classroom model has done a poor job of imparting these skills to students. The way children have learned in the classroom for generations has focused on lectures and worksheets. Past generations would depend on group sports, clubs and teenage jobs to impart these vital skills onto students."

Carlos Fosca's curator insight, January 1, 12:04 PM

“A December 2015 report published by Taylor & Francis Online, explored the efficacy of teaching problem solving before programming in Robotics. The study group found the course rated highly for student satisfaction, over 92%. It was suggested that further exploration of problem-solving skills would garner better results. Thus cementing the idea that Robotics and problem solving are co-dependent of each other.“

Advocacy in the New Year | Knowledge Quest | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it
It is often difficult to "toot your own horn"; however, advocacy is not bragging. It is simply supporting a cause. Our cause? School libraries matter. Every student has a story. Fake news is real and fact finding must be taught. Will you join me in making 2019 our year for advocacy?

Magic Art of Tidying Up the Library Part 2-Genre-fying. | Read and Think Librarian

I only genre-fied fiction in my middle school library and I would never go back. My circulation  increased 175% and kids can still use the catalog. What has disappeared are my kiddos that wandered aimlessly and then just grabbed a book. I know that it is a great skill to be able to find a book on a library shelf, but I work at a public library and we have popular collections and staff who WANT to help you find a book. It starts a conversation and builds relationships. I can really say the same thing about having those great book conversations with students. I still teach the basics of library organization, but with increased curriculum demands I have eased up on it.

School libraries supporting literacy - SCIS

School libraries supporting literacy - SCIS | School Library Advocacy | Scoop.it

Makerspaces. Innovative learning environments. Online communities. Augmented realities. Digital citizenship. In these times of rapidly changing technologies, increasing amounts of information, and often futile attempts to keep up with the latest trends in school librarianship, it is sometimes handy to be reminded that the core business of a school library is literacy.

A growing body of international evidence shows the significant impact that a school library can make on student achievement. However, simply having a building that is dedicated to the usual library resources is not enough; that building must be adequately staffed by librarians who can implement effective school library programs. These programs may aim to increase student knowledge of and skills in information and digital literacies, though it is important to remember that reading literacy underpins all of this. After all, despite the proliferation of digital devices in schools, our students still require the skills to function in a text-based society.
