About.com: Exclusive Interview with 'Cosmopolis' Writer/Director David Cronenberg

About.com: Exclusive Interview with 'Cosmopolis' Writer/Director David Cronenberg | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Great interview with David Cronenberg from About.com where he talks about directing Robert Pattinson In "Cosmopolis"- "I'll Be There. I'll Be With You Every Moment"

Q.: In casting Robert Pattinson, it's kind of a double-edge sword, isn't it? You have his Twilight fans anxious to support him in whatever he chooses to do and then you have the people who dismiss him because he is 'that guy from Twilight'.

C.: Yeah. In a weird way, on the one hand of course I'm completely aware of all of those elements and also of course when you're making a movie that for an independent movie was relatively expensive, you have to have a leading character who is very charismatic and who can carry the weight and has the star quality and so on, because you're going to be looking at him. He's literally in every scene in the movie, and that's pretty unusual. So he has to have that. But at the same time, you want to forget the movies, you know? You want to forget his movies and my movies because we're creating this completely new thing and you don't know what audience you're going to get. So ultimately when you're making the movie you're saying, 'Okay, I'm here with these actors. They're wonderful actors, I cast them because they're terrific and they will bring great stuff to the script,' and then at that point you're just making a movie and you're not thinking about any other movie.

Q.: Needing an actor to carry the film by being in every scene, how did you figure out Robert Pattinson was the right guy to play Eric?

C.: [Laughing] Well, this is the magic of casting! I think as a director, it's part of your job. It's a really important part of your job. You as a director just have to intuit that this actor will be able to carry off this role. We often talk about chemistry, for example, in movies between actors, let's say.

Q.: It strikes me with Cosmopolis that the chemistry actually needed to come between you and Robert more so than between Rob and any of his co-stars.

C.: There's truth in that too. That is the unspoken thing is the chemistry between the director and the actors is the key. And at a certain point I think Rob would...you know, he's a serious actor and he didn't want to be the one who was going to blow this movie. He was kind of thinking, 'Well, I'll be alone in that limo because I won't have one person who is always playing opposite me. It's really a one-man show with a lot of day players coming in.' And I said, 'No, you won't be alone because I'll be there. I'll be with you every moment.' And so that is a real element.

Robert Pattinson, David Cronenberg make for well-suited pair - The Boston Globe

Robert Pattinson, David Cronenberg make for well-suited pair - The Boston Globe | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it
Filmmaker David Cronenberg and “Twilight” leading man Robert Pattinson rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange last week to promote their new psychological thriller, “Cosmopolis.” Both men agree that their visit was a bit strange.

Q. You just rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. What was that like? And what do you think the people there would think of this movie if they saw it?

Cronenberg: All through the halls of the stock exchange they have these monitors built into the walls, and they were all showing clips of “Cosmopolis.” All of the people there who were marshaling us were incredibly excited about the movie and really wanted to see it. And they were incredibly friendly and sweet, and I was suddenly thinking, “This is the wonderful, friendly face of capitalism. I don’t know why I’ve been fighting it for so long. I think I’m going to buy some stock.” [Pattinson laughs.]

Q. Mr. Pattinson, what did you think of the visit?

Pattinson: I’m so clueless about anything to do with that world. I was kind of just terrified that I was somehow going to mess it up. And also to see people’s enthusiasm. It’s so alien. Even people’s attitudes there. It seems so alien to me. I mean, I’ve met traders before, but in their own environment — everyone’s extremely happy, which is not what I expected. It doesn’t seem stressful at all. They were all excited about seeing who was going to ring the bell this morning. They had the American gymnastics team closing it that day. It looks like a really fun place to work.

Q. You guys seem like you like each other a lot. You seem so close during this publicity tour. I was thinking, when I looked at pictures from the stock exchange visit, that you actually look like relatives.[Cronenberg and Pattinson laugh.]

Q. Mr. Pattinson, how have you taken to the Cronenberg fan base? I imagine that it’s strange to see “Twilight” fans with people who love David Cronenberg movies.

Pattinson: Absolutely. We were in London and we did a Q&A and it was two very diverse groups of people who suddenly came into contact with each other for I think probably the first time. And, I don’t know . . . David’s horror film fans . . . and general “Twilight” female fans . . . are actually quite a good pairing. I think both of them didn’t see anything in each other first of all, but they’re quite a good, odd couple. When you see a bearded guy with long hair, who absolutely will weep [for Cronenberg] . . . and then a “Twilight” fan who will weep at that, they actually look like a couple.

Q. Mr. Pattinson, I have to ask, in reference to all of the talk show hosts who are asking you personal questions right now: I’m always fascinated by the ability of celebrities to just disappear during a controversy. How do you do that? Is there a tunneling system? Where do you go to hide when you’re so watched?

Pattinson: There is a netherworld where celebrities go. They’re the only ones that have access to it. A mysterious little network of boroughs. (Giggles.)

Rotten Tomatoes - Interview: David Cronenberg on Cosmopolis

Rotten Tomatoes - Interview: David Cronenberg on Cosmopolis | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Just when you thought David Cronenberg couldn't surprise you, here comes Cosmopolis, a hallucinatory express ride into modern oblivion that's unlike anything in the director's already distinct body of work.... Perhaps the most fascinating element to Cosmopolis is the performance of its star, Robert Pattinson. Having previously stepped sideways from his teen-idol status to mixed effect, Pattinson here throws himself fearlessly into Cronenberg's world, delivering an unforgettable, almost alien-like portrait of a young man disconnected from reality and willfully engineering his own spectacular demise...

RT: Robert Pattinson. There were plenty of people who were a little surprised when you picked him for the role, but I have to say he gives a really sublime performance. You knew what you were doing, clearly -- so what was it that drew you to Robert?

Cronenberg: Well, casting always starts in a very pragmatic way. It's, "Is this guy the right age for the character?" "Does he have the right sort of physique, the right screen presence?" "Is he available, and if so, can you afford him? Does he want to do it?" You know, all of those things. But then you do your homework as a director, more specifically, and you watch stuff. I watched Little Ashes, in which Rob plays a young Salvador Dali; I watched Remember Me; I watched the first Twilight movie. And I watched -- interestingly enough, I suppose, because people wouldn't expect it -- but you watch interviews with the guy on YouTube, you know. I want to get an idea of his sense of humor, his sense of himself, the way he handles himself, his intelligence -- all of those things you can't really tell from watching an actor play a role in a movie. I suppose in the old days you meet the guy and hang out, and go to a bar or whatever -- [laughs] -- but these days nobody has time for that, or the money, and so you do it some other way. And once I'd done all that stuff, I thought, This is the guy I want. I thought, He'd be terrific and I actually think he's a very underrated actor -- and it would be my pleasure to prove that by casting him.

Robert Pattinson’s Cosmopolis Punches Highest Per-Screen Average This Weekend

Robert Pattinson’s Cosmopolis Punches Highest Per-Screen Average This Weekend | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it
After a five day press blitz and trailing enough heat to power the Mars rover Curiosity, Robert Pattinson’s Cosmopolis racked up the weekend’s biggest per-screen average at the box office, beating out any other film in release “indie or studio.”...

Playing in just three screens in LA and New York this weekend, Cosmopolistook $ 72, 327 – which works out as $ 24, 109 per theater.

After its Cannes Film Festival debut and resulting mixed to positive reviews, following its U.S release this Friday the majority of critics reviewed Cosmopolis as compelling viewing, singling out Pattinson and Paul Giamatti for particular praise.

Right now Pattinson is enjoying the best notices of his career with Cosmopolis and his upcoming film slate is blazing.

New roles in David Michod’s The Rover alongside Guy Pearce and Mission: Blacklist a film based on the U.S military’s pursuit of the now dead Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, from the perspective of ex-Army Interrogator Eric Maddox who led the intelligence mission — Pattinson will star as Maddox.

Pattinson has also signed on to renowned German documentary/filmmaker Werner Herzog’s Queen of the Desert which will star Naomi Watts as famed explorer, British Empire attache and writer – Gertrude Bell. Pattinson will play T.E (Thomas Edward) Lawrence, best known as Lawrence of Arabia. A British Army officer and noted writer, Lawrence befriended Bell and the pair helped establish crucial dynastic changes in Jordan and Iraq at the turn of the twentieth century.

And it doesn’t stop there. Pattinson is also set to star in a film based on the life of The Band, the Canadian-American roots rockers who famously toured with Bob Dylan in 1965-66 (latterly 1974). Also on the table is Map to the Stars, an as-yet-still-seeking-financing collaboration with Cronenberg (again).

Robert Pattinson’s Cosmopolis Reviews Are In: Mixed To Magnificent

Robert Pattinson’s Cosmopolis Reviews Are In: Mixed To Magnificent | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it
It’s been a helluva week for Robert Pattinson. What with gamely dodging ‘the elephant in the room,’ a surprise ‘Opening Bell’ appearance at the New York Stock Exchange, a press junket, Times Talk and an MTV special — Pattinson and director David

Cronenberg are going all out to spread the word that Cosmopolisis coming to a theaters.

Back in May when Cosmopolis was screened to critics at the Cannes Film Festival, reviews ranged from baffled to rapturous.

Variety’s Justin Chang declared: “Pattinson’s excellent performance reps an indispensable asset,” in a film that was “an eerily precise match of filmmaker and material.”And even when some critics didn’t embrace Cronenberg’s surreal film noir, many praised Pattinson’s performance as his finest to date.

The best of them – and they were legion – trumpeted Pattinson’s arrival as a serious actor, one destined for even greater things.

Robert Pattinson to play T.E. Lawrence in Werner Herzog’s indie “Queen of the Desert”

Robert Pattinson to play T.E. Lawrence in Werner Herzog’s indie “Queen of the Desert” | Robert Pattinson Daily News, Photo, Video & Fan Art | Scoop.it

Just days before "Cosmopolis" opens in limited release, star Robert Pattinson has joined the cast of Werner Herzog's indie "Queen of the Desert," which will star Naomi Watts as English writer Gertrude Bell.

Pic will chronicle Bell's life as a writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer and political attache for the British Empire. One of the first women to graduate from Oxford at the turn of the 20th century, she traveled through the Middle East, defining the borders of Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Pattinson is attached to play T.E. Lawrence, a British Army officer whose writing earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, on whom David Lean's classic 1962 epic is based. Lawrence was a good friend to Bell over the years, as the duo helped establish the Hashemite dynasties in Jordan and Iraq...
