This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program. We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) . Enjoy!!
Today, the DoD’s Defense Innovation Unit is announcing not one, not two, but five such drones that have been tested, approved, and are now formally available for government use — including two from formerly consumer-focused drone companies Skydio (based in California) and Parrot (based in France).
The Songar drone is a regular unmanned aerial vehicle -- that just so happens to come with a mounted machine gun and 200 rounds of ammunition for riddling targets with bullets from the sky. Here's how it works, and how its aerial targeting capabilities could shape up on the battlefield.

Leo Guardados insight:
Modern warfare seems to be evolving with drones as fast, if not faster than civilian use. The power and advantage that AI and UAVs will bring to the millitary use will be astonishing, saving the lives of many service men and women that in other circumstance would parish in active combat. The trade off however is that this same technology that is being perfected to protect and save lives, can be turned around to harm us as well. This begs the question on morality in which, do we allow AI to protect us? Should we continue on to the path of weaponizing UAVs with various agents not limited to protictiles? The possibility of territorists groups arming a device with biological agents is not farfetch anymore, and the technology on miniturizing a nuclear weapon is advancing in other governments too . These are very concerning questions in my opinion, if we continue to develop this type of warfare technology.

The attempt to assassinate Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduras with explosives-laden drones has put the spotlight on technology used to thwart drone attacks.
Reality is hard to grasp in governments such as the information-free zones of #Venezuela and #Maduras but I'll given them the benefit of the doubt and say this might have happened. Funny how much press this story is getting because it has the word "drone" in it.
