Remotely Piloted Systems
This is a media curation page for the PIRatE Lab's AARR Program.  We are developing practical, low cost programs to monitor resources in our coastal zone (the land near the ocean and the ocean near the land) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs aka "drones") overhead and subtidal Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) .  Enjoy!!

Northern Lights shot with a Drone

Exploring the Northern Lights in Iceland with a Drone, flying over epic landscape in Reykjanes Peninsula. Filmed with: Matrice 600 Camera: Sony A7sii Lens:…
PIRatE Labs insight:
Great images...those northern lights are REALLY bright!  Or perhaps stated RELATIVELY bright.  Still took some great sensor tech to collect this low light event.  I particularly like the shots with the street lights: they weren't so washed out/overexposed as to ruin the shot.

A traveling exhibit of Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s wind-powered Strandbeests (“beach animals”) makes its only West Coast appearance at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, opening tomorrow and running through Labor Day. We got a chance to talk to Jansen and see his massive creations up close and in action.
PIRatE Labs insight:
Very cool kinetic sculptures.  When they move, they are so organic.  I suspect each of these demos took many years and umpteen months of trail and error.

Back in 2014, Disney first submitted its patent to use drones in its themeparks as part of its entertainment mix. The drones would essentially serve as giant screens or programmable fireworks. In theory they could supplement or even replace existing light shows, fireworks displays, or even parade balloons. Th

The new technology would allow parks to project magical images onto screens or other surfaces at night.
PIRatE Labs insight:
We have posted about this before, but here are a few new images of the patent.  They are working to have the whole deal controlled by a single console/a single 18 year old kid.
