D Lang MusicPage's insight:

I will have to agree with sir jones on this one pro tools is expensive.

Sir Jones's curator insight, March 9, 2013 8:16 PM

basically suggesting that pro tools is more for the trained engineer than logic.

Pros: pro tools industry standard, designed as a recording and editing tool, (logic is less expensive and more accessible, more user friendly, allows more interfaces to be used)

cons: pro tools is to proprietary, expensive, more knowledge based, (logic is only available for mac computers)

Dj Philosophy's curator insight, October 7, 2015 4:48 AM

There are many great reasons why logic has the upper hand for the "at home musician". pro tools was made for people with lots of training on how to use the program.

Pro Tools - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation for Microsoft Windows and OS X, developed and manufactured by Avid Technology. It is widely used by professionals throughout the audio industries for recording and editing in music production, film scoring, film and television post production, musical notation and MIDI sequencing. Pro Tools can run as standalone software, or operate using a range of external A/D converters and internal PCI or PCIe audio cards with onboard DSP.

Fundamentally, Pro Tools, like all Digital Audio Workstation software, is similar to a multi-track tape recorder and mixer, with additional features that can only be performed in the digital domain. It supports 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit float audio at sample rates up to 192 kHz, and can handle WAV, AIFF, AIFC, mp3, WMA, and SDII audio files and QuickTime video files. It features time code, tempo maps, elastic audio, automation and surround sound capabilities.

The Pro Tools mix engine has traditionally employed 48-bit fixed point arithmetic, but floating point is also used in some cases, such as with Pro Tools HD Native. The new HDX hardware uses 64 bit floating point summing.

This is very good facts about pro tools

this article is about the announcement of the new pro tools 11, and how its so call best production softwar yet

Deepanshu Gupta's curator insight, August 13, 2013 5:40 PM

1. New Pro Tools Avid Audio Engine  Delivers multiple times the processing power of Pro Tools 10 on the same hardware configurations.

2. It has a 64-bit architecture which exponentially increases the number of simultaneous virtual instruments and the performance to handle the most sophisticated sessions.

3. It has offline bounce which delivers mixes up to 150 times faster than real time. In Low-latency input buffer it ensures ultra-low latency record monitoring without sacrificing plug-in performance.

4. Dynamic host processing -- Maximizes plug-in count by reallocating processing resources as needed.

1. To Get Some Features You Have To Buy HD
2. Pro Tools 11 is not cheap, there are other DAWs on the market that offer far more for less, in some cases at a fraction of the price. If you don’t need to buy into a Pro Tools workflow and don’t envisage having to take your sessions to Pro Tools studios then Pro Tools may not be the best DAW.

3. Now that Pro Tools 11 is AAX only, that means some of your plug-ins may not work when it ships, they may never work.

Logic Pro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Logic Pro is a hybrid 32 / 64 bit digital audio workstation and MIDI sequencer software application for the Mac OS X platform. Originally created by German software developer Emagic, Logic Pro became an Apple product when Apple bought Emagic in 2002. Logic Pro is part of Apple's Logic Studio bundle of professional music applications.

A consumer-level version based on the same interface and audio engine but with reduced features, called Logic Express, was also available at a reduced cost. Apple's GarageBand, another application using Logic’s audio engine, is bundled in iLife, a suite of software which comes included on any new Macintosh computer. On December 8, 2011, the boxed version of Logic Pro and Logic Express were discontinued, and it is now only available through the Apple App Store at the price of $199, which used to be the price of Logic Express.

Logic Pro provides software instruments, synthesizers, audio effects and recording facilities for music synthesis. It also supports Apple Loops – royalty-free professionally-recorded instrument loops. Audio effects include distortions, dynamics processors, equalization filters, and delays. The Space Designer plugin simulates the acoustics of audio played in different environments, such as rooms of varying size, or producing the echoes that might be heard on high mountains. Logic Pro can work with MIDI keyboards and control surfaces for input and processing, and for MIDI output. It features real-time scoring in musical notation, supporting guitar tablature, chord abbreviations and drum notation.

D Lang MusicPage's insight:

I like the way wiki explained logic but wiki put way more info than it did for pro tools

This gives the full spec list to both programs and show the consumer who has the upper hands straight from the box if you understand the terminology.

Here you find out more about this particular form of music software. It also does a comparison of the different types of software. I recommend reading this before purchasing any music software.
