Storytelling is a universal human trait. It emerges spontaneously in childhood, and exists in all cultures thus far studied. It’s also ancient: Some specific stories have roots that stretch back for around 6,000 years. As I’ve written before, these tales aren’t quite as old as time, but perhaps as old as wheels and writing. Because of its antiquity and ubiquity, some scholars have portrayed storytelling as an important human adaptation—and that’s certainly how Migliano sees it. Among the Agta, her team found evidence that stories—and the very act of storytelling—arose partly as a way of cementing social bonds, and instilling an ethic of cooperation.
At first, Migliano wasn’t actually interested in storytelling. She wanted to know what qualities the Agta most value in their peers, given that they are nomadic and their camps continuously shift. So, her students asked 300 Agta to name the five people they’d most want to live with. They also asked the volunteers to nominate the strongest people they knew; the best hunters, fishers, and foragers; the ones whose opinions are most respected; and the ones with most medical knowledge. And finally, almost as an afterthought, they asked the volunteers to name the best storytellers. That, they assumed, was something relatively unimportant, and would make for an interesting contrast against the other more esteemed skills.

HACKING FACE ID, the facial recognition system built into Apple's iPhone X, isn't easy. Unless, it turns out, you're a very specific hacker—say, a rare 10-year-old kid, trying to break into the phone of whichever of your parents looks the most like you. Attaullah Malik and Sana Sherwani made that discovery earlier this month, when their fifth-grade son, Ammar Malik, walked into the bedroom of their Staten Island home to admire their new pair of iPhone Xs just after they’d set up Face ID. “There’s no way you’re getting access to this phone,” the older Malik remembers his wife telling her son, in a half-joking show of strictness. Malik offered to let Ammar look at his phone instead, but the boy picked up his mother's, not knowing which was which. And a split second after he looked at it, the phone unlocked. The parents were shocked. Ten-year-old Ammar thought it was hilarious. "It was funny at first," Malik told WIRED in a phone call a few days later. "But it wasn't really funny afterward. My wife and I text all the time and there might be something we don’t want him to see. Now my wife has to delete her texts when there's something she doesn’t want Ammar to look at.

According to MWP, online videos are watched by 55 percent of people daily, WordStream says that 90 percent of Twitter videos are viewed through a mobile device and more than 10 million videos are watched on Snapchat daily. Peter Shroeder also claims that click-through rate of emails with videos increases by 200-300 percent.

The 2002 movie “Minority Report” portrayed a futuristic vision of advertising as the lead character, John Anderton, enters a shopping mall that identifies him from retina scans and pitches personalized ads to him as he walks by: “John Anderton, you could use a Guinness right about now.” That scene influenced a generation of marketers.
I riffed on this premise with a cartoon a few years ago in which John Anderton is publicly subjected to ads for hemorrhoid medication and incontinence pads based on his purchase history (cartoon at the end of this post).
The rise of voice AI and the internet of things opens up another domain of personalized advertising more personal than the mall — the home.

The internet is overloaded with content. Even if you only set out to read the most important articles and watch the top videos, you'll never get done.
Just staying up-to-date and informed is a challenge. You have news to read, blogs to check, and YouTube hits you've got to watch. But instead of opening each site a half-dozen times a day, you can use an RSS app to curate your content automatically.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's a file that most websites update with their newest blog posts, videos, deals and more, so you can "subscribe" to sites and have new content automatically pushed to you. Instead of checking the 40 websites you follow, you can just open an RSS reader app and see what's new on all of those sites together.
In the years since Google Reader died, a wide range of RSS feed reader apps have come and gone. Today, there are still a number of great RSS tools that are actively being improved, apps you can use to follow your favorite sites—from powerful crowd favorites like Feedly to simple Chrome extensions like Feeder. Four years ago, FiftyThree—the team of ex-Microsoft creatives who launched a wildly popular iPad sketching app called Paper—was flush with venture capital and full of expansion ideas that they put into action. They started producing hardware: an iPad stylus called (unluckily) Pencil. They expanded the app to work on iPhones as a Post-it-esque idea jotter. They experimented with in-app purchases and a patronage model. They even soft-launched a whole new app called Paste, which lets Slack users pass visual materials back and forth with ease. But all this activity had a somewhat flailing feel: What was Fiftythree’s core business? Was it about productivity software, or creative apps? Now, with a relaunch of both Paper and Paste, the company seems to have its story straight again. And that story is . . . they’re about productivity and creativity. And making great slide decks....

Facebook’s customized newsfeed has left traditional digital publishers scrambling to find innovative ways to broadcast their content in a way that catches and, most importantly, retains readers’ attention. To aid this mission, British technology company Newsroom AI introduced a platform that will allow any publisher to create a similarly customized newsfeed of content to meet users needs. According to Mihai Fanache, the founder and CEO of Newsroom AI, the average user spends 40 minutes every day on Facebook, while digital publishers have a one-minute retention. He believes by customizing content for users, a publication can achieve higher retention rates, while also eliminating the need for overlapping content. Using a single line of code, Newsroom AI allows a publication to gather stories from across its site and to incorporate content from similar outlets. That permits it to fill in gaps in coverage without adding additional stress to its editorial output....

It started with a simple question: How long does it take to write a blog post? To find the answer, we reached out to 1000 bloggers. We asked a few other questions at the same time, and the responses gave us insight into the business of blogging.
Each year since, we’ve repeated this research. Over time, the data tells the story of a changing industry. Key findings:- The average blog post takes 3 hours and 20 minutes to write.
- In 2017, bloggers spent 39% more time on a typical blog post than in 2014
- Three years ago, 1 in 20 bloggers spent 6+ hours on a typical blog post. Today that number is 1 in 8.
