Back in September, Google launched a brand-new Panda update, which according to Pierre Far will impact on 3-5% of online queries and results. It has been specifically designed to target thin and inconsequential content more precisely, while also increasing the already sizable chasm between low and high quality websites.

As if this is not enough for webmasters to contend with, Google also plan to roll out a brand new Penguin update in the weeks ahead. Penguin 3.0 is also expected to be driven by more intricate and precise algorithms, while it will also work in conjunction with Panda to create more clearly defined and transparent lines between websites.

What Should Webmasters Expect?

In practical terms, it is the Penguin 3.0 update that will arguably have the biggest impact on webmasters. This is because of the ongoing work with disavow, where Google’s search team have worked alongside thousands of industry experts and previously penalized webmasters to leverage the best possible examples of poor quality links. This trend will continue throughout the current update, as Google utilize an ever wider range of user distributed data to streamline their results and deliver a more concise strategy....

...A user asked Cutts how algorithms parse the differences between popularity (high pageview totals) and actual subject matter authority. The question was framed in the context of social media: If social signals affect search algorithms, does Google trust the traffic coming from Facebook or Twitter as an indicator of expertise?

The video response was, while it’s a work in progress, search crawlers are getting better at assessing credibility. One of the ways they do this is the old reliable method – links. However, they don’t bestwo authority in a vacuum. Basically,  a website with a lot of inbound links from relevant (and well-known) sites will build authority on that topic.

This is a call for subject-matter consistency. If a business reliably provides resources and valuable information about a certain topic, it will accumulate inbound links that contribute to page authority....

...We are way past the one thing solution -- optimizing to the search engine. Even in social networks we are getting to the (saturation) point, needing social or native ads just to be discoverable. 


It will need to be a combination of things: both/and.


Consider this: Better is more


When your content has depth to it, both in format, functionality, and the quality of your writing, it goes from unremarkable to worth reading. You're not a bookmark or a destination yet, just worth reading, or scanning as it may be....

Search engine optimization (SEO) experts say domain-level link authority features—such as the quality of links to a website and its overall PageRank—have the biggest positive impact on Google rankings, according to a recent report from Moz.


The report was based on data from an in-depth survey of 150 marketing professionals who specialize in search engine optimization. Each respondent rated the relative levels of influence exerted by broad search ranking factors on a scale of 1 (not influential) to 10 (highly influential).


Domain-level link authority features received an average score of 8.22, the highest of any factor. Page-level metrics ranked a close second (average score of 8.19), followed by page-level content/keywords (7.87). Detailed definitions of each factor can be found in the full report....

This is a case study on how I built a website that receives over 100,000 visitors per month, in less than 1 year, without spending $1 on advertising.

This was done 100% through SEO and content strategy.

1. The website reached over 100,000 visitors in 9 months.
2. This was a new domain, registered just a couple months before launch.
3. This was done in a language I do not read nor speak (Japanese).
4. Japanese is a non-roman character language, making it nearly impossible to use most of the popular SEO tools.

Whew! That's quite a list. How are we supposed to remember all of those? Thanks to Single Grain and Backlinko, we don't have to.
