...When new B2C clients ask me what the benefits are of working with bloggers, I usually say something to the effect of: it's about marketing to people who will tell others about you (think word-of-mouth marketing).
Outreach let's you tap into influencers' reach and communities to get the right niche of people talking about your business, which ultimately impacts product/service trust and consumer purchasing behavior.
But, unless you're a smooth talker (which, I'm definitely not), then this elevator pitch won't be enough to convince your client to go with blogger outreach promotion. So instead, I've broken down 3 main talking points of why your B2C clients should want to work with bloggers....

To evaluate small business blogs, forget about the numbers. Instead, look to first impressions and storytelling.
Bloggingng consistently isn’t enough to drive business, there are other factors that go into developing a successful blog. One of the biggest mistakes small business owners make is to start a blog and then create content on auto pilot just to get stuff out there. Understanding how to evaluate small business blogs for effectiveness is important to know that your valuable time isn’t being wasted.I bet you think this blog is about the numbers, right?
Wrong, I very rarely evaluate the effectiveness of a blog on numbers – unless the numbers are trending the wrong way. I evaluate a blog on first impressions, content, storytelling and whether the blog is business-minded. I find asking questions around these core categories can help you understand if your blog is set up for success....

A brand is essentially the sum of what people say about it. We’re connected and social now. And that’s not all. We’re hypercritical, hyperactive and so hyper-online, we’re barely offline when we sleep. ...Along the way, it’s nearly impossible to avoid subjects such as blogging, search, social, and some of the other tricks of the trade. Why? Because the best website in the world won’t make you a dime unless people come to it and find themselves engaged with the content there. There I go again. I can’t stop spouting the gospel. I want my clients to understand the key to effective online marketing, or any marketing, is to get customers to know, like and trust you. That’s a high bar seldom achieved with a heavy dependence on ad or brochure-like communications. Ugh. Stop me now before I talk you into doing content marketing against your will....

Want to get more blog readers? Follow these easy-to-understand best practices as part of your corporate blogging efforts and you'll be amazed at the results.... One question I’m often asked when talking about blogging best practices is, “How do I get more blog readers?” My answer? Writing great content for your corporate blog is the easy part, getting it read is what takes skill. Understanding blog post optimization and doing your homework before you write your post can go a long way toward making sure your blog content attracts readers. Sometimes when I say that “writing is the easy part” thing, writers get all bristly (and yes, it’s a word if I say it is), but it’s true. There are lots of people out there writing some terrific stuff, but attracting readers often has nothing to do with how great your writing is. Knowing how to write for the web, which is completely different than other types of writing, knowing how to optimize your posts and understanding the importance of building your networks can make all the difference in the world. And that, my friends, is how you get more blog readers. Let’s talk about why....

Learn how you can use your blog not just as a traffic and lead generator -- but also as a lead nurturing tool.... When it comes to the role of business blogging in inbound marketing, there's no question that it fits quite nicely into the 'Attract' stage of the methodology. Because blog content makes excellent social media fodder and is naturally discoverable through search engines, it can be a phenomenal way to attract new visitors and prospects to your website. Furthermore, blogging also plays a critical role in the 'C onvert' stage, since we all know how effective it can be for lead generation. But there's another part of the inbound marketing methodology where blogging also fits -- and doesn't get enough credit. And while it may not be where most marketers would primarily put it, it can definitely have a significant impact here, as well. That, my friend, is in the 'Close' stage -- the stage of the methodology in which marketers are actively trying to nurture leads to a point of sales-readiness. Because not all blog readers are brand new visitors, right? I bet many of the leads in your database are reading your blog -- shouldn't you pay them some attention, too? That's right! Not only can your blog help you bring in qualified visitors that you can convert into leads; it can also be a powerful lead nurturing tool. A bit of a marketing Swiss army knife, that business blog. So, are you ready to start squeezing more juice out of your blog in the middle of the funnel? Here are 11 great ways to start using your blog as a tool to nurture your existing leads....

Don't blog in the dark. If your business has a blog, these simple steps help you set conversion goals and measure and track them with Google Analytics. First understand that blogging is an awareness channel, positioned at the top of the conversion funnel. Conversions assigned to the blog should be things that create another connection between you and the audience, like a newsletter sign-up or Facebook like. The goal of the blog is to have people actively choose to connect with you elsewhere, a position that will put you at the customer’s top of mind when a need for your product or service surfaces. A 2011 State of the Blogosphere report from Technorati Media surveyed bloggers, and the results of the question, “How do you measure the success of your blog?” saw a variety of responses....

Blogs are more influential than social networks in shaping consumers’ opinions and purchase decisions, according to Technorati’s 2013 Digital Influence Report. Below, additional findings from the 2013 Digital Influence Report, based on surveys conducted among 1,200 consumers, 150 top brand marketers, and 6,000 digital influencers. Having trouble figuring out which blog metrics matter? This post tells you exactly what to measure, how to measure it, and how often.
The challenge isn’t so much measuring our efforts, as there are enough tools out there that make this easy. It’s more about knowing what to measure, how to do it, and most importantly, what to do with the data once it’s been uncovered.
The focus here is to let you in on what we measure most frequently -- and, perhaps most interesting to you, the tools that allow us to do so....

My friend and podcast co-host Tom Webster recently penned a really honest and thought-provoking post called “Authorship.”
In the post, Tom laments that the more he guest posts and syndicates his writing, the less relevant he may become. I know that sounds counter-intuitive but he makes some good points.
The web cares about CONTENT, not necessarily authors, and Tom postulates that in our frenzy to write and distibrute content, we may be creating more and more work only to become less and less visible....

...Technorati released a great report at the start of 2013 showing that after retail and brand websites, blogs are the most influential for consumer purchases. The best part is that the majority of influencers blog, and quite a few have multiple blogs! So where’s the disconnect?
Why are brand marketers only spending 6% of their social media budget on INFLUENCERS? (Brands spend about 10% of their digital marketing budget on social, with 6% of it dedicated to influencers). It’s shown to be effective and that consumers trust blogs more than social advertising and other networks. Influencers have a community that’s built on trust. When they recommend something to their community, people listen and trust them.
Why are marketers still hesitant?...

As crappy content keeps adding to the clutter, the business blogging world will change for the better. If you haven't yet flipped through Velocity Partners' SlideShare deck, "Crap. The Content Marketing Deluge," it's definitely worth a look (we've embedded it below). It's no wonder the 2013 State of Inbound Marketing report revealed that 18% of marketers are making quality content their top priority this year. The good news is, while it's becoming harder and harder to get eyeballs on your content, the future is bright for marketers committed to quality. And because business blogging is one of the most effective ways for marketers to consistently deliver content to their audiences -- and because it's right in my wheelhouse as HubSpot's blog manager -- I thought I'd share with you what I think the future of business blogging holds....

Not to take away from the amazing results that can be achieve by reaching a large and highly targeted audience with your blog content, but not every benefit of maintaining a business blog is dependent on having huge readership. The reality for most business blogs, at least when they’re first starting out, is that readership can be low… very low. It can be discouraging to those who are contributing content, and working like crazy to keep a blog afloat to not see unique visitors, page views and subscribers come in droves from the get-go. Additionally, it can be tough to justify the ROI of your business’ blog to supervisors, management or ownership without having incredible reach. If this feels familiar, don’t sweat it. There is huge value to be had in maintaining a business blog, even if your readership is low....

Consumers consider blogs to be trusted sources of information – more so than any social networking site, including Facebook....
