Is the phone call dead in PR?

Is the phone call dead in PR? | Public Relations | Scoop.it
This PR pro asserts its death has been greatly exaggerated. Here's why.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

We've talked about this in class but I agree, I think more PR people should pick up the phone and call people. You DO stand out. You get LESS e-mail and you get personal contact that doesn't happen with other methods.

Victoria's Secret Wants to Win Over Millennials With Its Own Mobile Messaging App

Victoria's Secret Wants to Win Over Millennials With Its Own Mobile Messaging App | Public Relations | Scoop.it
Victoria's Secret wants to see what today's millennials are talking about with a new twist on mobile messaging.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I think this is brilliant on VS's part. They launched themselves into something to brilliantly simple like messaging into their app that people already use. By connecting with people who are similar they are probably saying things they wouldn't normally say with their friends. The app comes with their own brand of emojis and regular ones.

Wait. Were people really expecting Victoria's Secret to run an admirable body image campaign?

Wait. Were people really expecting Victoria's Secret to run an admirable body image campaign? | Public Relations | Scoop.it
They aren't in the business of making people feel good about themselves.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

Well well well, VS not only changed the slogan of the Perfect "Body" campaign they now have a model who claims to hate her body or something. Did they wake up one morning in the PR dept and go "Let's make a video of one of our models comparing themselves to another model and people will relate and love it" and I swear that's exactly what they did. Why they thought that was a great idea is beyond me. They just need to think it out fully before they decide to throw it out in the world for more controversy.

Kim Kardashian's Paper magazine photos are lewd, shrewd PR

Kim Kardashian's Paper magazine photos are lewd, shrewd PR | Public Relations | Scoop.it
The reality TV star's risqué photos in the magazine are an example of how taking risks and being authentic can generate a lot of buzz, for a person or a brand.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I am so conflicted with Kim K. A part of me like others such as celebs is shouting from the roof tops "YOU ARE A MOTHER". Give it a break Kim, go be a parent. Kourtney doesn't ever pose like that and she's got three kids. Take a page from your sisters book and be presentable. North is going to see this when she's older and it's going to be like "Mom, what in the".

Then the PR girl in me, saw the tagline of the Paper article (even before the pictures) and thought "Oh okay, pretty good PR stunt even though YOU'RE A MOTHER". But she controlled the situation, created her own buzz for her brand and literally broke the Internet. I don't know one person who isn't talking about it and even if people are like me and aren't a fan they are STILL talking about it. And that's exactly what she wants.

Fact Check: Susan G. Komen giving as much as they should?

Fact Check: Susan G. Komen giving as much as they should? | Public Relations | Scoop.it
Times-Union readers want to know:
Is it true that Susan G. Komen, the huge breast cancer organization gives only 20 percent of its donations to cancer research and pays its CEO $684,000 per year?
These elements are true, but deserve some explanation.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

Did someone leave the hot water running? Susan G Komen seems to be in it again. This time not only does it involve past incidents it's now been discovered how they only use 20% of donations to cancer research. Sad. But yet what's really unsettling that the CEO is making $684,000 a year ironically the same amount of money they pulled from Planned Parenthood originally.

Tragedy of the would-be Victoria's Secret lingerie king

Tragedy of the would-be Victoria's Secret lingerie king | Public Relations | Scoop.it
As the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show heads to the UK for the first time we reveal the story of Roy Raymond, the man who brought sexy underwear to the masses.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

What I liked about this article was that gave you the history of how it all came about. I did work for the Canadian version of Victoria's Secret, LaSenza a few years ago and my employer was Limited Brands (aka: Limited bought LaSenza and brought VS to Canada). I actually had ZERO idea about the history and bad marketing (and of course why they should of hired a PR firm) that landed them selling and becoming depressed. I think it's fantastic what the original concept was. As a woman, I don't like going to boxed stores to purchase that. I want to feel girly and fun. That's what both Roy and the Limited brand did. Yes, it became more commercial but that's how you make the money and it still feels less like a department store when you want in.

Why do reporters hate PR pros so much?

Why do reporters hate PR pros so much? | Public Relations | Scoop.it
Reporters talk on Twitter about how much they hate looking in their email inboxes. Here's how PR pros can change that.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

What a great article, it tells you how to change the relationships you have with the reporters so they don't in fact hate you. I always hear how they don't like us, blah blah blah. But this article also tells us to remember we need them. No coverage = no client.

Victoria's Secret CEO talks branding and passion in Huntsman | Public Relations | Scoop.it
President and CEO of Victoria's Secret Sharen Turney made her way to Penn as part of Wharton’s Leadership Lecture Series to discuss the qualities that make a successful leader and brand.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I thought this was pretty interesting to see her personal path to get to where she is now and what she wants to do as a company. I liked how they said they touch on an emotional level. What is sexy? It's going to mean different things to different people and that's how they try to do the concepts for the stores.

Susan G. Komen Targets a New Generation

Susan G. Komen Targets a New Generation | Public Relations | Scoop.it
Judith Salerno, CEO of Susan G. Komen, says the breast-cancer nonprofit has to stop focusing on how it did things in the past and find new ways to market itself, reignite its supporters and appeal to younger people.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

First and foremost: The Planned Parenthood scandal circa 2012 is back in this article and the comments on the actual make me laugh. Clearly some research is in order. But enough about that.. They are aiming to my generation.. I think that's a good thing because we should be as educated as possible about it, however they need something bigger than using Twitter and Facebook to grab our attention. When she said the Ice Bucket challenge, I think from a PR point of view they need something viral like that to get the attention of my generation.

Public Relations Has a PR Problem

Public Relations Has a PR Problem | Public Relations | Scoop.it
It's easy for a journalist to tweet snide remarks about PR people, but our symbiotic relationship should not be overlooked....
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I thought this was great insight on someone who chose PR and why the majority of us love it and of course the general Journalist - PR pro feud added some humour too it. But I do agree with the writer we do this because we love it. The client who was mentioned almost crying about getting into the Wall Street Journal? That's why we do what we do. If I ever (and I hope to) have clients that excited I know I'm doing my job.

Charities Won't Take Porn Money Unless They Can Keep It a Dirty Secret | Public Relations | Scoop.it
It’s not that nonprofits won’t take money from the adult entertainment industry. Oh no, they simply wish the whole affair were a little... well discreet.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

A bit of an older article but wait, what did we just read? Women rejected $75,000 from PornHub due to the name of the company. Even the article states the whole Planned Parenthood thing (LOL). Komen makes some really great decisions some day's and then does something else the next.. I'm really starting to think a new PR team is in order.

Victoria’s Secret may hold fashion show overseas again next year

Victoria’s Secret may hold fashion show overseas again next year | Public Relations | Scoop.it

This The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is making its London debut this year and could go overseas again next year. Sharen Turney, CEO of the L Brands lingerie chain, spoke of the possible move during the Columbus-based retailer’s conference call with Wall Street analysts about its third-quarter financials, released yesterday.

Amber McGuirk's insight:

This is a great way for VS to continue to expand their customer base by having the fashion show over seas in coming years. UK women were recently against the brand and petitioned to change the slogan of their Perfect Body campaign and it actually worked. By doing that action and continuing to bring the show overseas VS is proving to the women of the UK that they mean business.

A movie about talking toys has a surprising amount of insight about how to be creative and stay relevant.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

When the Lego movie came out the little child in me was beyond stoked. I dragged my younger brothers there and honestly, it was fun for the whole family. I actually didn't really think of it as a PR tactic to revive the brand when I saw it. But the points that were made in the article make a lot of sense after I read and it recalled the movie. Good job Lego, good job.

Victoria’s Secret heeds the cries of unhappy customers | Public Relations | Scoop.it
Victoria’s Secret recently altered their lingerie campaign slogan after much public outcry and a petition.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I had some really low hopes for VS on changing the tagline. As the article said big brands don't normally change their ads. It's Victoria's Secret it can basically do whatever it would like and no one really is going to get that annoyed and stop shopping there. I'm not sure if they changed it because the Fashion Show was in London this year or what but kudos to you VS.

'Alex from Target' becomes Internet sensation

'Alex from Target' becomes Internet sensation | Public Relations | Scoop.it
A lowly Target cashier is taking social media by storm. Will the brand be able to boost its PR efforts by capitalizing on the trend?
Amber McGuirk's insight:

I believe it was Monday night. Causal night on Twitter when the #AlexFromTarget appeared. Who is this Alex from Target? Why is every teenage girl freaking out about it? Well, some girl (assuming) decided that Alex from target was the hottest thing since One Direction and tweeted him out to the Twitter world. Now was this planned by Target as some speculate? No, I highly doubt that Target was that smart to think of #AlexFromTarget. Should they capitalize from this? Oh yes. They still got hit from the data breach last year so go have some fun with this Target.

JD Williams hits back at Victoria's Secret 'perfect body' campaign | Public Relations | Scoop.it
They say their campaign includes an image with a crucial point of difference - the models range from a size 10 to size 16, which, they say, promotes beauty as a source of confidence.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

This is still an ongoing issue in the UK, but this time a retailer has decided to go Anti-VS and create a campaign #PerfectlyImperfect. Which is great body positive image however it's a huge corporation that will not budge on the ad since it clearly says it's intentions.

Amber McGuirk's insight:

I know I say this every time there's some form of controversy with Susan G Komen but it's my favorite topic right now. I think about once or twice every couple of weeks they are in hot water - again. So, this is expanding on the new scandal about them and Fracking and how activists would like them to cut the ties. Here's my favorite quote out of the article “You have a nonprofit that is raising millions of dollars to try to cure a disease,” Jaggar said, “and instead of taking steps to stop this disease, the same nonprofit is partnering up with industries that are causing the disease; Industries like fracking.” B-I-N-G-O. They are literally going against any form of progress they have done because they teamed up with a company that causes cancer. I mean really? DO YOUR RESEARCH.

This Victoria's Secret Advert Is Really Pissing People Off

An online petition is calling for Victoria's Secret to rethink an 'irresponsible' new product launch for their 'The Perfect Body' underwear range.

The accompanying advertising campaign features women - in their underwear, unsurprisingly - with the...
Amber McGuirk's insight:

So back in 2010 when the line basically got redone and re-released it got a lot of controversy. This time around we got a bunch of women in the UK not to happy about the new advertising. I agree with positive body image, I do but this is a little bit ridiculous. The ad CLEARLY has quotation marks around the word "body" and then states the perfect comfort demi bra. We know that the models are photo shopped, this isn't a new shocking thing. Would it be nice to see actual people rocking the line? Of course. But we more than likely will not see that for many years. Campaign for real models, not because you've misunderstood an advertisement that clearly stated it was a new bra.

Ottawa police offer shooting updates via Twitter | Public Relations | Scoop.it
The social media platform has become something of an information clearinghouse after a member of the Canadian Forces was killed in that nation’s capital.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

With the tragedy of what happened this week in Ottawa and all major reporters being present to report I think using Twitter to inform the public is a good way of crisis communication because they can get more up to date facts as it happens and then the full story on the news. It's a quick way to get the facts out.

Can you be a supermodel and a feminist? Tyra Banks thinks so.
Amber McGuirk's insight:

With the Emma Watson feminist talk going viral a few weeks ago I think that this is a great article because of Tyra's achievements as a women of color and also working the runway with 30 pounds of extra compared to the other girls. This also promotes a more positive body image when we see that in the magazines and on the runway.
