Wanna Know If Students Are Learning? Ask Them These 4 Questions

Wanna Know If Students Are Learning? Ask Them These 4 Questions | ICT in Onderwijs | Scoop.it
Based on how I had been taught to be an educator the best ways to know if students are learning was to give them a test. If they failed, it was their fault and they needed to do better next time. It took me a long time to learn that in the process of learning the teacher and the student need to be partners.

Classroom Management For The Connected Classroom

Classroom Management For The Connected Classroom | ICT in Onderwijs | Scoop.it

Making changes to the way we teach and especially to the way we manage our classes can be challenging. It can initially lead to more disruption and distraction while we find out what works best for us and while our students adapt to this new way of working. However, if you involve your students and let them know what your doing and why, you might just find that the devices your students bring into class and their way of working with them can be a blessing rather than a curse.

The power of words

The power of words | ICT in Onderwijs | Scoop.it

New Findings Inform the Laptop versus Longhand Note-Taking Debate —

New Findings Inform the Laptop versus Longhand Note-Taking Debate — | ICT in Onderwijs | Scoop.it
Taken together, these recent findings show that the means by which notes are taken (longhand or laptop) seem not to matter much – and for delayed tests and when opportunities for studying the notes are given, not at all. The original explanation that a longhand-superiority may be due to the notes having less verbatim overlap does not hold because despite finding that indeed verbatim overlap is larger in laptop notes this did not lead to a reliable decrease in test performance later on.

Well worth a read, but we are still applying new technology to a very dated way of studying.

MrBieb's curator insight, March 1, 4:00 AM

In mijn ogen het belangrijkste in het stuk, the concluding remarks': "The main recommendation that can be given based on the studies presented is: Make sure that the students capture the main ideas and concepts in their notes that they will need to know later on. Emphasize those ideas when you teach, ask in-class questions about those ideas (retrieval practice), and return to those ideas at different points in time (spaced practice)."

En eigenlijk hoort dat standaardpraktijk te zijn.

We began with a sense of mission: to support teachers in making effective use of learning technologies. Educational research has done little so far to help teachers into the digital age; policy hardly anything at all.

Storytelling: the Single Currency for Media & Marketing

Storytelling: the Single Currency for Media & Marketing | ICT in Onderwijs | Scoop.it

At its best, content — or storytelling — is not slick endorsement of a brand or product. It provides solid, authentic information an individual can use in his or her life presented in an accessible and interesting way. But modern storytelling is requiring a constant stream of insights around audience preferences and an endemic understanding of how technology is influencing how stories get shared.

This is forcing marketers, media and academia to innovate. This means that the next generation of content creators will need enhanced writing and storytelling capabilities, even in an age of 140-character messages and texts. They must be empowered with contemporary philosophies, methodologies and skills for success.
