Cirque du Soleil and the neuroscience of awe

Cirque du Soleil and the neuroscience of awe | The Power of Storytelling | Scoop.it
A group of scientists studied the mind-blowing effects of Cirque du Soleil shows. Here’s what they learned.
Art Jones's insight:

How visual storytelling affects your brain

Excerpt:

To study awe, the Lab of Misfits enlisted audience members at Cirque du Soleil’s O show in Las Vegas. Over five consecutive nights, they drafted 282 Cirque ticket holders — split roughly evenly between men and women — to let the lab into their heads during the show.

For 60 of the participants, the lab literally looked at what was happening in their heads. They fitted those participants with EEG caps that measured their neurological responses during the show.

What the lab found was that at the moment that audience members reported experiencing awe, the brain activity in their prefrontal cortexes — the part of the brain that is in charge of executive function, where we decide what our intentions are and then act on them — went down. “It’s as if they were losing their sense of attentional control,” says Lotto. “They weren’t focused on looking at things. They were just taking it in.”

The “F Word” in Storytelling and Business

The “F Word” in Storytelling and Business | The Power of Storytelling | Scoop.it
Failure with a small 'f" is storytelling gold for PR and business communications.
Art Jones's insight:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Winston Churchill

There are an awful lot of F words in Winston Churchill's quote, yet FAILURE is the F word focused on in this post.

Why failure, because no one is  perfect. Failure is a part of being human.

Why does failure matters in storytelling?  When we are engaged by a story where someone fails the struggle, the will to overcome failure is relatable. The best stories touch us because we see a bit of ourselves in the protagonist struggle.

Many companies discover storytelling when they have an immediate need to be addressed -- like growing the business.

But what I've noticed is that there is very little understanding about how to think more strategically about business storytelling and the impacts it has across the organization.

Hence this infographic I created. Enjoy!

Art Jones's insight:

Moment to Moment

A lot has been written about how to tell stories on social media platforms. All of us are wired for storytelling and story listening, yet when it comes to storytelling online we fail miserably.

Let's stop forcing all of the content we create to conform to a story formula. The easier and more natural thing to do is to use the power of the amazing social media platforms to share our most compelling moments.

In the short video attached Google gatherers interesting visual MOMENTS posted by real people. The moments presented are not seeking to tell us a story, more importantly, they all share compelling moments we can all relate to.

The art of storytelling: Researchers explore why we relate to characters

The art of storytelling: Researchers explore why we relate to characters | The Power of Storytelling | Scoop.it
For thousands of years, humans have relied on storytelling to engage, to share emotions and to relate personal experiences. Now, psychologists are exploring the mechanisms deep within the brain to better understand just what happens when we communicate.
Art Jones's insight:

When Neuroscientist conduct experiments on the effects of storytelling in humans, their finding consistently amaze.

Modern science provides proof what thought leaders like Plato understood to be true via observation nearly 2,500 years ago.

Humans are wired for story.

Excerpt:

Researchers found that no matter what form of story telling the participants used, the brain networks that were activated were the "theory-of-the-mind" network, which is affected by the character's intentions, motivations, beliefs, emotions and actions.

"Aristotle proposed 2,300 years ago that plot is the most important aspect of narrative, and that character is secondary," says Brown. "Our brain results show that people approach narrative in a strongly character-centered and psychological manner, focused on the mental states of the protagonist of the story."
