Recently, Google released a brand new version of Google Sites (see my thoughts on this here). Over the last few months, I have had the opportunity to work with several classrooms on creating digital portfolios using some simple keystrokes and a little bit of Google Apps.

Using technology for learning makes sense. Technology creates access, transparency, and opportunity. Any smartphone or tablet is media incarnate–video, animation, eBooks, essays, blog posts, messages, music, games. The modalities of light, color, and sound all arranged just so to communicate a message or create an experience.

But there is a difference, claims this graphic from teachbytes, between using technology and integrating it deeply into the learning experiences of students. This is, of course, what models like the SAMR model are based on–that idea of mere use to automate, to redefining what’s possible.

This is not a new idea, but what makes this graphic useful is the indicators offered that clarify Dos and Don’ts–kind of like an educator’s Goofus and Gallant.

That response brought to mind the in-class flip model. If you are not familiar with in-class flipping, it keeps all parts of the flipped model at school. Teachers pre-record direct instruction, which becomes a station in class for small groups of students to rotate through. While students are at their stations, the teacher would work one-to-one with some students, while others students spend time on independent activities or group work. Watch this video to learn more about in-class flipping.

Technology is not a tool. Heidegger proposed it involves two intertwined definitions: human/anthropological and technological/instrumental. He proposed that technology is about a way of thinking, acting, and speaking about, with, and through the tools humans use. In that sense, the line about technology being transforming is accurate. When the two definitions are separated, that is not the case.

Nice example of how a persons life and learning strategies became transformed by an experience at a young age (in this particular case it was an encounter with primitive computer technology, but in general it  could have been anything: e.g. hearing the saxophone played well for the first time, or "seeing" the mother of god in a cave)  

 

Alas, also a typical example of unwarranted educational proselytizing. The man is so enthusiastic about his new insight that everybody has to hear the good news. Worse, everybody has to convert and repent. The idea that Catholicism, Jazz or technology enhanced project based learning  does not work for everybody, never enters the man's mind.

 

Lets stop with this kind of "inspirational" stories in educational design. Lets stick to science (mainly cognitive and social psychology). I know it is boring, but it is our best shot at finding out what works for whom under which circumstances.

Why haven’t education reform efforts amounted to much? Because they start with the wrong problem, says John Abbott, director of the 21st Century Learning Initiative.

Because disaffection with the education system reflects a much deeper societal malaise, it’s imperative that we first figure out what kind of world we really want: a world populated by responsible adults who thrive on interdependence and community, or a world of “customers” who feel dependent on products, services, and authority figures, and don’t take full responsibility for their actions? The answer, he says, will point to the changes needed in all three pillars of education — schools, families, and communities.
