It's Way Past Time To End Militarism - Alta Cali

It's Way Past Time To End Militarism - Alta Cali | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it
I can’t remember now if it was elementary or Jr. High School, but Way Back In The Day I was sent home for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. There had been some incident in the Dirty South; a lynching, shooting, bombing, or incident of voter disenfranchisement or other discrimination, and I had had enough. Ordinarily, being sent home from school would usually mean “Wait until your Father gets home,” which meant I was in for corporal punishment.

Pops served in the U.S. Navy, and had a scar near his eye where a Japanese bullet had grazed him on Iwo Jima. He had also trained to be a policeman, but wasn’t hired due to his race. Perhaps that’s why I didn’t get a whuppin’. Pops (actually my step-father) was a very light-skinned man from Baton Rouge. He definitely had PTSD, but managed to provide for my Mom, me and my sister in our series of flats in the Fillmore District of San Francisco. Normally decisive, I could tell he wasn’t as angry as I expected him to be. He asked for my explanation. I said something about “civil rights.” Having marched on Market Street some years earlier to support voting rights and/or protest another lynching, Pops conceded I had a point, one of the handful of times he admitted I was right. But having served in the military, he still believed I should respect the flag, despite his experiences in the South. I believe this is called Stockholm Syndrome. So instead of a flogging, my punishment was to stand at attention for an hour with a military salute.

It’s been rather amusing listening to people use racism to justify racism. The uproar over Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand for the National Anthem has shown that this is not “America The Beautiful,” but rather “America The Ignorant.” My favorite line is “Well MY relatives didn’t own slaves.” Yeah, but your relatives discriminated against dark-skinned people, and taught you to do the same. And you and your relatives benefitted from the work of those slaves; the wealth of this nation is a direct result of their labor, suffering, and death. But is is not at all amusing to hear people say really stupid things like “he should respect the flag because of the people who died protecting it.”

First of all, the people who died protecting “the flag” did so in order for for people to be able to express themselves, not so that they would have to do what YOU think they should do. Numero Two-o, the military has been used by the Congressional/Industrial complex to kill MILLIONS of innocent people since Day 1, so don’t even go there about their “sacrifice.” Indeed, many, if not most of those who “died for our country” were coerced to do so; conscripted as young as 15 years of age, given a weapon, and pointed towards the “enemy.” For these poor souls I do have sympathy. The wild-eyed yahoos who couldn’t wait to actually kill someone? Not so much.

I guess what is most disturbing is that Kap’s protest is being used by the Reactionaries to further divide the nation, as well as to whip up militarism. Unthinking, unblinking, unquestioning Americans have been acquiescing to whatever aggression “our” government decides on: Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Granada, Panama, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. The School Of The Americas has trained death squads that have killed tens of thousands of mostly civilians all over Latin America, especially in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras.

As for the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance and the song “God Bless America,” well, all those ceremonies are more than a little creepy. Having to stand and recite a meaningless pledge to a mythical “America” has obviously warped impressionable young minds; just look around you. God Bless America probably should be the National Anthem; at least it’s a plea for divine guidance, which is sorely needed in this country. But the Star Spangled Banner was written by a slave-owning attorney (!) who persecuted abolitionists in court. During the War of 1812, the Brits offered freedom to slaves (black and white) who fought against the renegade colonies.

Paul Brennan wrote: “During the War of 1812, the British promised freedom to any slave who would join them. Actually they promised more than just freedom, they promised a new life with free land grants in Canada. Thousands of slaves took the British up on the offer, and even helped Admiral Sir George Cockburn burn Washington D.C. And the British kept their word to the slaves, settling most in Nova Scotia. As for the revolting slaves who fell into the hands of the Americans– that's where Key's "the gloom of the grave" comes in.”

So…..no. It’s time for the “Star Spangled Banner” to be tossed on the scrapheap of history, along with slightly fascistic activities like pledging allegiance to…..anything. Someone singing or playing God Bless America during the seventh-inning stretch at baseball games is all the patriotism we need. Most people in this country don’t know that modern police forces in the USA are descended from the “slave patrols,” and many police departments still follow those protocols. America’s ugly little secret is no secret if you are a minority. If you really want to show respect for your country, wake up and smell the cordite.

Do "Americans" Have Stockholm Syndrome?

Do "Americans" Have Stockholm Syndrome? | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

The term “Stockholm Syndrome” was created after a famous bank robbery in Sweden, where the victims developed sympathy for their captors. The Wikipedia entry also suggests: Victims of the formal definition of Stockholm syndrome develop "positive feelings toward their captors and sympathy for their causes and goals, and negative feelings toward the police or authorities".[4]

Also: “Stockholm syndrome has also come to describe the reactions of some abuse victims beyond the context of kidnappings or hostage-taking. Actions and attitudes similar to those suffering from Stockholm Syndrome have also been found in victims of sexual abuse, human trafficking, discrimination, terror, and political oppression (all emphasis mine).[4]”

Aha! Discrimination and political oppression, perhaps the signature mechanisms of control in the good ol’ U. S. of A. And these work even better when the victim, in this case the voter/taxpayer/consumer/worker is not aware of the forces at play. You know, when the individual think that they are “free.” Again from the Wikipedia entry: “Symptoms of Stockholm Syndrome include:

1. Cognitive: confusion; blurred memory; refusal to accept the reality of events.

2. Emotional: lack of feeling; fear; helplessness; hopelessness; aggression; depression; guilt; dependence on captor; development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (autism, ADHD, "restless leg syndrome...whatever Big Pharma can convince you that you have).

3. Social: anxious; irritable; cautious; estrangement.

4. Physical: increase in effects of pre-existing conditions; development of health conditions due to possible restriction from food, sleep, or exposure to outdoors[19]”

Sound familiar? This pretty much describes the average citizen of not just the USA but of all of the Americas, especially those parts about: “refusal to accept the reality of events,” “lack of feeling,” “helplessness,” “hopelessness,” “aggression,” “depression,” “guilt,” “dependence on captor,”  “anxious,” “irritable,” “estrangement,” “increase in effects of pre-existing conditions,”

This last one is especially interesting, as it could help explain the deplorable state of the health of the general population in this country: “development of health conditions due to possible restriction from food, sleep, or exposure to outdoors.”

Mercury Retrograde March 5 - March 28 2019!

Mercury Retrograde March 5 - March 28 2019! | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

“To be forewarned Is to be forearmed.”

Yeah yeah, I know; astrology is superstitious nonsense. You know this because you have actually researched the subject, and found it wanting, right? Or at least you have talked to people who have been practicing astrology for 20+ years, and made your decision based on the preponderance of the evidence. What’s that? You say you don’t “believe” in Astrology? Because, why? You read a newspaper horoscope and what it predicted didn’t  happen? Your peers and families don’t “believe” in astrology, so you don’t either? Your X-Significant Other believed in it, and things didn’t work out, so bleep them, and astrology too? (OK, I get that one).

But in fact, many of the same people who “believe” astrology is superstition also believe in a hyper-personalized Super Deity whose attitudes and actions suspiciously resembles those of their Dad. Or they “believe” that the government is here to help us. Or that some faceless, nameless guy 10,000 miles away is somehow a threat to them getting enough beer or pie. Or maybe they believe modern steel-frame concrete buildings can collapse in their own footprints at free-fall speed due to kerosene fires. (A hummingbird full of kerosene will not bring down your refrigerator).

“These people” probably did not do their homework at school; nor were they very good students. Most likely, they were not interested in, or curious enough about any subject to Do Their Own Damn Research. You (yeah you) probably don’t even know how to perform a proper search on that fondle-slab you…fondle more than your Significant Other.

So you actually know next to nothing about the worlds great religious traditions (especially Islam) or metaphysical traditions You (yeah you) probably could not name more than three or four religions without going to Google. And for sure couldn’t explain how astrology and astronomy are different, and how they are the same. OR the origin and meaning of the word “astrology” (star logic), nor how old it is (it was described as ancient by…the ancients).

As to whether or not it’s real, how would you know? In fact, when is the last time you applied the scientific method to any area of your life? That is: observing, recording these observations, and comparing them. Pretty much the only way to know if something is true or not. It’s called “the scientific method.” Somewhere in there is also peer-review. But at no time are you asked to “believe” anything. If you see the same thing happen over and over again at the same exact time, there is probably a correlation. And while correlation does not necessarily imply causation, sometimes it does.

So, you lazy bums here’s your chance to participate in an unofficial, unfunded, but nevertheless empirical research project. You may have pay attention the Observable Universe instead of staring at that tiny screen (in portrait mode no less). If you don’t “notice,” some of these phenomena, it’s only because you weren’t paying attention.

From March 5 to March 28,, our little neighbor Mercury will slow down a bit in its 88 day journey around the Sun. This phenomenon usually occurs three times per year, and lasts about 22 days. As seen from Earth, Mercury’s apparent motion is backwards, or retrograde; like how passing a slower-moving car on the highway makes it look like it’s going backwards. And while there is no “logical” or “scientific” reason why this should affect things on Earth, here is your opportunity to see if it does, indeed; especially your life, you little narcissist.

During this roughly three week period (it will seem longer), all things involving communication and transportation will be affected by delays. Ha! you say, so what else is new? Well, what will distinguish this period from the normal grind is the frequency and magnitude of these interruptions. In the immortal words of Carmine from Philly: “Big! Big I tell you!”

Another easy way to observe this phenomena is to take a mental note of how often words that begin with re or de appear in print, broadcast, and your own personal life. The most common manifestations are repairs and delays. Misunderstandings, forgetfulness, and being late are easy to observe. Typographical and numerical errors abound. Media types will be retracting statements on TeeVee and correcting errors in print.

The generally negative effects of this transit include: losing or misplacing things (including, or I should say especially computer files), travel delays (count the broken-down cars on the side of the road), transportation snafus, involving dozens, scores, or even hundreds of vehicles, “technical difficulties” in broadcast media, misspeaking (watch that “send” button!), retractions, lost persons and pets (a noticeable increase in road kill), recovery of long-lost remains, abductions, big fires, big floods, recalls of products, food poisoning, false alarms, wrong phone numbers, demolitions, demonstrations, strikes, refugees, power outages, sports injuries (especially to star players), and of course the ever popular Celebrity (or other prominent person) Death Watch.

You or someone you know will almost certainly arrive at a place that is closed because of remodeling, has gone out of business, or has relocated. Ahhh, but its not all bad. Research pays off in the form of major discoveries or revisions in science or technology. Often new species of plants or animals or new planetary bodies are discovered. The phrase “first time in history” will be bandied about. Finding lost objects, and seeing people after long separations are common occurrences. There should be at least one national story about long-lost siblings being reunited, and the dog or cat who traveled _____ miles to find their way home. Perhaps a heroic rescue, or the payment of reparations.

The easiest way to observe this phenomena is in the World of Sports. It will be readily apparent that there are an uncommon number of records being set, as well as overtime games, ties, blowouts, upsets, and the aforementioned injuries to significant players. Instant replay will provide an unwelcome delay to games, and some teams will trot out their “throwback” (retro) uniforms and jerseys.

Even if you do indeed notice an observable difference in the aforementioned phenomena, it really proves nothing. However, if you see the same things happen during each of Mercury’s three retrogrades each year for several years, then you might conclude there is something happening that modern science hasn’t figured out how to measure yet. And that it’s a good idea to backup your hard drive and leave early for your appointments. All that will be necessary is to tie up a few supercomputers for a couple of years and compare the frequency and magnitude of these types of events when Mercury is retrograde, and when its not. “Modern” science will catch up with ancient science sooner or later.
But until then, “measure twice; cut once.”

Real People For President! - J.Thomas/BlackHorseMedia

Real People For President! - J.Thomas/BlackHorseMedia | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

Since most of our politicians are lawyers or businessmen, it should be no surprise that the solutions they propose for most problems involve either passing yet another law/bill/ordinance, or farming said problem or project out to a private business, be it a for-profit,or a “non-profit” corporation, otherwise known as an NGO. The only problem with these approaches to meeting basic human needs is that they are ineffective. Human Beings are constitutionally unnamable to obey laws; all of

human history confirms this. And most businesses fail.

Treating health, for example, as “billable hours” is both morally reprehensible, irresponsible, and inefficient. When it was seen that costs were rising out sight, the lawyers and businessmen got together to subsidize the insurance industry, rather that guarantee healthcare for all. So currently we have the specter of insurance premiums rising out of sight. Neither the legislative or the business approach produces an acceptable outcome for “the people.”  But “Obama Care” does make more money for the healthcare industry. This translates into raises for managers and corporate officers, bigger perks and bonuses,

promotions, Board of Directors. Not lower rates or better care for the public. And that’s because we are not “the people;” we are consumers. And that’s what the medical/industrial complex is all about; not healthcare.

We want our elected officials to have our best interests at heart. Political office should not be seen as a stepping stone to greater power or wealth, but as an opportunity to direct some of the stupendous resources available to this nation to be sure every child, woman, and man has the best life possible. Not the greatest number of gadgets; the best quality life; education, healthcare, housing, natural foods, clean water and air, and access to cheap or free transportation (if you have to own a car to survive, you are in no way “free”). Any laws/bills/ordinances that are passed need to deal with ensuring these basic human rights are addressed. Instead, most “legislation” involves figuring out which private entity gets tax-payer dollars.

Electing people whose background does not include history, science, music, and languages ensures solutions to problems that are…undiplomatic. Statesmanship is replaced by one-upmanship; an endless series of mini cold wars; many of which turn hot. Democracy? Hardly. We have a one party Corporatocracy with two branches; Jackasses and Wooly Mammoths. Both parties are war-mongers, corporatists, and morally opaque; relics of 18th Century Continental politics.

The United States is still very much a European (mostly British and German) project. In fact, all of The Americas are former European colonies, and as such, constitute occupied territories. And let us not forget that millions of Nazi’s and fascists fled Europe for The Americas; Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Columbia, and…the good ol’ U.S. of A. Many of these individuals became prominent businessmen and politicians in these lands. Some even continue to promote proto-facist ideologies in the halls of governments’ including our Congress and Senate.

It’s difficult to watch a room full of people staring at their devices instead of talking to each other. It would be different if they were texting their cohorts about a sit-in at Sen. Feinstein's office to protest her support of U.S. involvement in (choose one) Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Sudan,Mali, Niger, Somalia, Palestine, Ukraine, or Novorussia. But noooo, it’s some torrid romantic thing or some stupid online game or gambling or idiotic Hollywood movie. Don’t get me wrong, my generation had plenty of “fun:” in-between the protests. But when are we going to forgo cat videos in favor of a “Twitter Revolution?”

And how about electing some structural engineers, history professors, and “Mom’s” for office, instead of the motley crew of No Nothings we have now?

- Eupora, Mississippi -

(Music: David Banner, “Cadillac on 22’s,” Mississippi: The Album) – The Great Eastern Forest stretched from the  Atlantic Coast to the Mississippi River and beyond. It was the dark  of the  Moon, dark enough  that it  was possible to avoid  avoid detection by the klans, militias, and raiders who would kill a Black or Indian just as soon as look at them.   But  there was  still  enough starlight to travel by.  A person could  avoid detection long enough to get away if he could live like an Indian for a couple of weeks.

The Mississippi night was soft and black. Earles was ready. It was near midnight, time to start moving towards the rendezvous point. A band from the Creek  People was moving through the area, headed North and West. The plan was to blend in with the tribe long enough to get as close to Kansas as he could. For someone who had never been more than 10 miles from the house he was born in, this was a major undertaking.

The end of slavery did not mean freedom in the New South. Earles could not take  much more of being treated worse than an animal. He was afraid he would eventually  have to kill a white man. Then he would be summarily hung, shot, and burned. He was tired of stooping over to pick crops, tired of eating ‘possums and ‘coons and pig guts, tired of the lynching and house-burnings. He was also tired of the lack of curiosity in the people in his community. There must be something better out there, and he wasn’t waiting to die and go to Heaven before he found out.

Sensational headlines in a recent issue of the Central City Extra scream: “Gentrified:Tech Land Grab Has Nonprofits Crying For Help!,” “Study Center Victimized!,” and “What Can Be Done To Ease the Nonprofit Crisis?!” I won’t mention the story by a fake homeless guy.

Seriously? A “nonprofit crisis?” How is that possible when there are over 6,000 NGO’s in San Francisco; one for every 130 residents? What about “How The Tech Land Grab Has Longtime Residents Crying For Help?” Couldn’t it be argued that NGO’s themselves are part of the gentrification process. If the City has to exercise it’s right of eminent domain to properly serve it’s residents, so be it (you go, Gayle McLaughlin!).

How Your Smartphone Makes You Stupid

How Your Smartphone Makes You Stupid | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

thrall | THrôl |noun literary: the state of being in someone's power.

The main reason the United States is on the irreversible course it is on is because: physics. Let’s call it Historical Momentum; “an Empire in freefall will accelerate unless there is an opposite and equal force.” Or it will eventually dissipate into smaller units of organization; villages instead of cities, energy converted to matter instead of the opposite, human beings given the same rights as tram-national corporations.

The other main reason is that the majority of the citizens who are in a position to provide the equal and opposite force are instead in thrall to, or beholden to, The Powers That Be. This control is exerted by The Media. Everything you see and hear is motivated by the Mushroom Theory: keep the public in the dark, feed them shit, and they will be happy. Ignorance is indeed bliss.

The latest and most dangerous addition to the Soft Machine is so-called social media. Someone(s) figured out you could make money selling narcissism, gossip, vitriol, games, and cute animals. Not to mention cellular devices and accessories, airtime, and “data.” We’re talking billions of dollars and hours for no productive result. Oh I’m sure a Tweet™ or text or call did something somewhere for someone, but 87% of what occurs over the internet is non-essential. And like most statistics, that one was made up from scratch.

The message from “the media;” so-called news and entertainment, and our education system is always the same: the ends justify the means. Pretty much what we learn in school is that it was OK to kill everything and everybody from the Atlantic to the Pacific and the Arctic to Straights of Magellan because “we” were white and Christian. I’m not either, so I’ve always had a problem with that (I used to actively root for the “Indians” back in the day before they were inevitably massacred in the Western movies Way Back In The Day).

We also learned that although almost all of the actual work that was done in this country was done first with free slave labor (African and indigenous), then indentured servant labor, then underpaid immigrant labor, somehow it’s OK that a few European descendants own and control everything because: “white.”

Somehow lost in all this was the fact was lost that we were to prepare ourselves to spend the best years of our lives commuting to a window-less, airless room, hating our boss and co-workers, and being too stressed out to enjoy the few precious hours The Man, which is to say The Banks, allot us on weekends and “holidays.”

This process is facilitated by keeping us in enthralled by electronic hallucinations. It’s much more subtle than The Matrix, and much more direct. Every television show, every ad on radio and TV, every movie, most print media, billboards, packaging, “branding,” peer pressure; all compel you to conform to The Narrative. And the narrative is this: “If you are rich, you can do ANYTHING you like and get away with it. And you too can get rich…if you win the lottery, or hit a jackpot in a casino. Just keep working and consuming and take your Xanax…..

But the primary tool of control today is that damned cellphone. It has completely destroyed any pretense of literacy; typing with one thumb? Really? The few actual artists still working in the film industry must go crazy seeing people watching movies in portrait mode on those tiny screens. And the sound quality for music is simply not there. Many webpages won’t display properly on phones, and they are certainly not places to store information.

No, they are entertainment and distraction devices. And what worries me more than anything is that they are used as babysitting devices. Seeing a child with their device is really concerning. They should be developing their physical bodies, instead of laying around like little slugs. And they could learn two or three languages in the time it takes to get all the coins it takes to complete The Quest, or whatever.

The internet was created to share information. While cat videos are information in the strictest sense, I pretty sure that’s not what Mr. Berners-Lee had in mind. There is tons of life-changing information available on the WWW, but it’s very difficult to see on a phone; especially in portrait mode……

American Decline: Save the Children | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

That would be our children, here in the US of A, not some (generic images of a) starving orphan in foreign lands. For a nation that claims to love and protect children, the USA does a pretty damn poor job of showing it. The infant mortality rate in this country is three times that of Sweden, twice that of Germany, and not much better than many nations with a fraction of our resources, like Cuba. Statistically, our literacy rates are among the highest in the world, yet many “American” children don’t read at their grade level. Nor can they write cursive, print, or type proper alphabets, words, sentences, or paragraphs. “Texting” is destroying literacy even as we speak. If we really want to save children in foreign lands, we could start by not bombing them, or undermining their governments, or stealing their resources, or exploiting their labor (farm workers). And the children on “Indian reservations,” and in the hills of Appalachia, or on the streets of Detroit are in just as dire straights (relatively) as the children over-seas.

The Salesforce Tower: A Blight On The San Francisco Skyline - J.Thomas/BlackHorseMedia

The Salesforce Tower: A Blight On The San Francisco Skyline - J.Thomas/BlackHorseMedia | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

I can’t get myself to take a photo of this obviously phallic edifice, although it intrudes on the eye from almost everywhere in the City. So I’ve substituted a stock photo of an industrial air-conditioner (thanks Alex Mak/Broke-Ass Stewart). Can you really tell the difference? I think not…..

One of the worst decisions in the history of city planning, urban design, and simple esthetics was made during the administration of Mayor Diane Feinstein. She removed the height limits on new buildings downtown, and actively promoted the “Manhattanization” of the San Francisco skyline. Since the go-go 80’s, scores of hideous structures have blotted out the sky, created  wind tunnels, and inflated real-estate values. No one structure embodies all three more so than the Salesforce Tower.

The City and County of San Francisco cannot figure out how to get public restrooms or housing built, and yet somehow a monument to greed, a veritable Tower of Babel was allowed to spring up almost overnight. This hideous apparition is supposed to symbolize “tech,” but in fact it is the essence of everything that is wrong with the technology sector. Instead of improving life for the average person, tech has dedicated itself to making the wealthy even wealthier, mostly by selling things with no intrinsic value. "Tech" has exploited peoples desire to be liked by charging them a fortune for "services"  like "airtime" and "data." It has even figured a way to charge you to watch advertisements.

The Wikipedia entry says: “Salesforce is the primary enterprise offering within the Salesforce platform. It provides companies with an interface for case management and task management, and a system for automatically routing and escalating important events. The Salesforce customer portal provides customers the ability to track their own cases, includes a social networking plug-in that enables the user to join the conversation about their company on social networking websites, provides analytical tools and other services including email alert, Google search, and access to customers' entitlement and contracts.[17]”

This type of hyper-specialization and monetization of every single detail can only add to the cost of whatever product is being sold. If it’s Teslas, it really doesn’t matter. But if it’s consumer goods, it means YOU have to pay Salesforce for something of absolutely no value to you.

But that is the essence of tech these days. Innovation? What’s innovative about email? The “cloud” is where information has always lived. Lot’s of fancy terms to make things seem more complicated than they are. And charge for them. What is Uber but a "gypsy" taxi service that has managed to “disrupt” the incomes of people who have worked their entire lives to pay for a medallion? There’s a hundred apps that deliver food; something Chinese restaurants have been doing for 100 years. I confess to being an Amazon Prime member (special circumstances, heh-heh), but I was fine with UPS.

Technology is supposed to make everyone's lives easier and better. So far the only real progress towards this end has been in renewable energy. But not nearly enough; burning filthy fossil fuels is still how the “industrialized nations” get most of their electricity, as well as to charge up their non-essential personal vanity-mobiles. And bio-tech seems to be devoting all it’s energy in extending the lives of  few wealthy white people. Cure cancer? It is to laugh! They haven’t even figured out how to cure the common cold.

The Salesforce Tower uses more electricity than the City of El Cerrito. Well, maybe not, but where’s the “tech” in the energy use? A building this size should capture all the water it needs from rainfall and fog-drip, recycle and compost all of it’s own waste, and generate at least half of the electricity it needs. But I’m afraid it’s just another airless box to join the Millennium Tower, Rincon Tower, et. al. These buildings all have one thing in common; fossil-fuel dependent, overpriced, completely out-of-scale for the City... and they are no place to raise a child.

Capitalism Eats It's Young - Joseph Thomas/Alta Cali ThePlanetaryArchives/BlackHorseMedia

Capitalism Eats It's Young - Joseph Thomas/Alta Cali ThePlanetaryArchives/BlackHorseMedia | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

Graphic by AdBusters

Capitalism starts off with many inherent contradictions. One of the most overlooked is the fact while it brands itself as "efficient," it is in fact wasteful. And while it puts a price on everything, it recognizes the value of nothing.

Allow me to ruminate, cogitate, and elaborate. You buy a product. Unless the packaging is made from 100% recycled materials, and is 100% recyclable, you are paying for "garbage." Their word, not mine.

This garbage must be disposed of. You either pay for pickup, or you litter are up to your armpits in litter. Either way you pay. So part of the cost of most commercial items that you buy is for something that is supposed to be "thrown away."

Except there is no efficient way to dispose of waste, especially plastics made from hydrocarbons, which is to say "oil." That's the reason the entire planet is coated with plastic, from micro-beads to the Pacific Gyres. Capitalism forgot that if you eat, you poop. And you must deal with the poop.

The traditional Victorian approach to unpleasant things is to dump them in the nearest body of water. Out of sight, out of mind. The first thing Capitalism did was to turn our watersheds into sewers. And then empty the sewers into the Oceans. This is an actual cost that is not factored into the product. Hence the contradiction.

Marx, (Karl and Groucho), Jung, and Einstein were the greatest minds of the 20th Century. Karl said capitalism would devour itself, and it is in the final stages of doing just that. Communism has been long dead, Capitalism is next.

Then maybe Confucian/Christian/Hebrew/Muslim/Buddhist style socialism can take hold and become the Universal Code of Conduct. Only one law is needed: "First, do no harm." Compassion for all creatures, animate or inanimate would be nice. As would "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." "Love thy neighbor as thyself" might be asking too much.

But it's worth a try.....

The United States Is Not America - Alta-Cali

The United States Is Not America - Alta-Cali  | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

Something else most people do not realize is that at the present time, most of the world has been successfully colonized by European countries. Starting with the Roman Empire, and right through the Spanish, French, and British Holy Roman Empires, with an assist from the Dutch/German/Austrian/ Belgian Connection (New Amsterdam became New York), the wealth of Europe was only possible by expropriating precious metals, gems, and labor from the Darker Races in the Global South.

Most of the former colonies have been “granted” their independence. Thank you, ‘Massa. But often this independence is in name only. In point of fact, many former colonies all over the globe continue to support the arrogant, decadent, and unsustainable “Western” lifestyle. This lifestyle is exemplified by the Cult Of Personality, consumerism, greed and selfishness, absence of compassion, and complete lack of self-awareness.

Tenderloin Housing Clinic Cover-Up.pdf - Google Drive

Tenderloin Housing Clinic Cover-Up.pdf - Google Drive | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

The cover-up is always worse than the crime.

One might think it would be a simple matter to get the answer to a couple of simple questions, like:

1. “How long do I have to live in a building while being exposed to hazardous materials, like lead paint and asbestos?”

2. “How long do I have to go without the legally required number of toilets for my building?

3. “How are seniors and people with disabilities supposed to exit the rear of this building in the event of (another) fire?”

Ahh, but one would be mistaken. The answer to these questions depends on who you are. “But there must be building codes, and ultimately the law to protect you?” Au contraire, mon ami: “the law” is not a set of Commandments, but rather an amorphous and basically incomprehensible collection of archaic restrictions that are subject to interpretation by bureaucrats , lawyers, and judges. The laws in the United States of America were written to protect property, and IT’S owners.

Black Panther, The Movie: “Black Power” Or Imperialist Propaganda?

Black Panther, The Movie: “Black Power” Or Imperialist Propaganda? | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

For me, personally, Black Panther was just another incoherent, violent, over-long Hollywood spectacle; and not a very good one at that. I really can’t remember what the point of the movie was, other than that the “good guys” won in the end. Well I think that’s what happened,

because maybe I’m getting old, but I really can’t remember how the movie began, or the middle, or even the end. Somehow in my minds eye I see Captain America and space aliens? What, that’s another movie? Oh wait, I do remember one thing; the armor-clad rhinoceroses. Cool! I want one!

Far from “empowering” the African American community in any way, this flic performed the function of all Mainstream Media: it made some very few already rich people even richer, while lying through it’s rotten teeth about pretty much everything. Black Panther had nothing at all to do with Africa, Africans, African culture or history, or African Americans. Yet, like “hip-hop,” it is being hyped  as if it is some kind of revolutionary art that benefits the African-American community. Would someone please tell me how, exactly, “black people”  have benefited from this movie? I’m sure the writer and a few actors made some big bucks, but “Wakanda?” Really?

The fact they used European-style science fiction to tell the story of an advanced African civilization is insulting enough. The appropriation of genuine African tribal artifacts and cultural expressions is both insulting and patronizing to Africans as well as to the audience, whatever ethnicity. And as someone who grew up reading Marvel Comics, I was personally offended to see the same plot that has been over-used in The Avengers, X-Men, and other films trotted out yet again. Hmmm, lessee; a motley alliance of bickering “heroes” saves the world. Again. This time with the indispensable aid of …..wait for it, the Central Intelligence Agency; Hollywood’s handler.

The fact that this movie has made a lot of money is often used as validation of it’s worth. And I for one am glad that a lot of Africans and African-Americans “got paid;” although what this really means is that few a “stars” got a stupid amount of money, while most of the cast and crew merely got a salary, and may never work again. But, like the “hip-hop,” industry, how does this benefit the greater African American community?

What I see is dis-empowerment by how you say, “encouraging” people to believe; not “think,” but believe that wearing certain clothes and having certain gadgets means you are “cool.” Not “conscious,” but “proper,” or whatever term is popular today. Being dope, fly, or proper will not transform the ghettoes, educate our youth, or get junk food, tobacco, alcohol, and lottery tickets out of our neighborhoods. Being able to purchase Black Panther toys, games, and Halloween costumes may indeed make some youngster “proud” to be of African descent, but it’s a false and temporary pride; as hollow as the plot to this ridiculous movie.

If Hollywood wanted to shine some light on the Dark Continent (sorry, I couldn’t resist), there are a dozen real stories they could have built on. The Pyramids in Egypt have been overused as plot devices, but the fact that the Sphinx may be over 40,000 years old indicates there were very advanced civilizations a very long time ago. Maybe tie it in with the Atlantis legends and/or some Sumerian or Greek Myths.

And what about “Adam’s Calendar” in South Africa? It is the oldest calendar known to man. Estimated to be between 75,000 and 100,000 years old, it is only one of perhaps 100,000 stone ruins scattered throughout the mountains, most of whose purpose is not at all clear. The “livestock corral” theory has been disproven because many of the structures have no entrance or exits. Speculation runs wild, but that’s what Hollywood is there for; not to make propaganda films for the 1/10th of the 1%.

Unfortunately, the Black Panther teaming up with the C.I.A. is exactly that. AFRICOM, anyone? “Wakanda?” Wakanda this…..

Why Johnny Can't Read, And Doesn't Know Anything

Why Johnny Can't Read, And Doesn't Know Anything  | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

“In the United States, there is no history, only media.”

— Carlos Fuentes

Damn you, “social media!” You have completely hijacked the main purpose of the internet; sharing information. I don’t mean information in the technical sense; 0’s and 1’s. I mean information in the literal sense; as in “literacy.” As in “What’s Goin’ On” (Marvin Gaye, 1971). As in; WTF?! Instead, most people have been “socialized.” They have joined the various “social networks” in order to feel as if they have meaningful relationships. In fact, most of these interactions are trivial, meaningless, and come with advertising. Social networking exists only because huge multi-national corporations can make money. They sell you a device, air-time, games, “apps,” and expose you to advertising from other multi-national corporations. And it’s all good, right?

Well no, it isn’t. Socialization, conditioning, brainwashing; whatever you call it, the results are the same. Accept what authorities put in front of you, and do not question it. Sit still, and be quiet. Want to exercise your freedom and independence? You are free to purchase as much as you can afford, and then some more on credit. I mean, when is the United States going to have a real “Twitter Revolution?”

Socialization begins at birth, is reinforced by “parenting,” and by the time the average child is five-years old, they’re done for. Any ideas of independent thought have been squelched in favor of succumbing to peer pressure; even if that pressure is contrary to the child’s own self-interest.Then there’s pre-school, where “sit-still-and-be-quiet” and obedience to authority is ingrained for good. Parents contribute, usually with the best of intentions; just like like most of your school teachers have. Then more lies by omission in textbooks and literature, much of it presented as fact (Land of Freedom, anyone?). Contradictorily (and perhaps the source of mental illness), the child is taught that they are “special,” with a capital “S.” Specifically, that they are entitled to anything they want by virtue of the fact they are “Americans.” However, the only way most people can express their uniqueness in this milieu is…to buy something.

James Corbett refers to cellphones as “fondle slabs.” Perfect devices for games and self-reinforcement, perfectly lousy devices for writing (Thumbs in portrait mode? Really?), and therefore for doing research, or watching movies (Portrait mode? Really?), viewing hi-resolution photographs, or listening to music. “Smartphones” are not computers, but many if not most people think that because they have one they are In Touch With The Modern World. In fact, they are only in touch with like-minded individuals.

I’ve given up on asking people how they know what they know; this is completely beyond the kin of people who cannot even spell Buddhism or know who Carl Jung was, let alone actually know anything about them. When I ask  where they get their information, most people have a deer-in-the-headlight moment that immediately tells me that they have no idea. Some will name a specific social network like Twitter or Facebook. Others will name some  “mainstream” media outlets like CNN or MSNBC (nobody admits to watching Fox). A teeny-tiny percentage will name an liberal source like Democracy Now! or HuffPost.

Everything you see or hear is carefully controlled by the Idealogical Apparatus that starts warping your mind as soon as you started watching cartoons. Far from harmless fun, watching impossible things occur over and over conditions the mind to accept total bullshit as reality. This apparatus includes all social conditioning from schools, to "news," to entertainment, to deliberate disinformation from intelligence agencies. The majority of cellphone addicts believe the first thing that they see on their devices, no matter what the original source. And most people never bother to find the origins of a story, or to even check if it is true. In fact, most people don’t even know how to perform a proper search.

The entertainment industry continues the charade through toys and games that generally reinforce mindless consumption patterns at the least, and aggressive stupidity at the worst. I was fine with the early video games where drones fought mechanized gun emplacements, but first-person “shooter” games? Really? Gee, I wonder why Johnny shot up the schoolhouse? Oh, no connection of course. Freedom of speech and free enterprise, right?

The “news” is almost entirely controlled by the “intelligence” agencies; “sources” say this and that. And it’s no accident that almost every militaristic plot in Hollywood movies has played out in real life; either before or after the film was released. Not to mention propagandistic drivel like 24, Quantico, and the almost necrophilic obsession with dead bodies in the various TV series like…well, almost all of them. Supposedly harmless entertainment like the Star Wars franchise seem to be prepping us for a nuclear war. I mean seriously, do you think humans will survive long enough to ever get to fight wars in space?

The reason there is no history in the United States of America is because the MSM/Hollywood has immersed us in electronic hallucinations. Everything you see is “virtual reality.” Reality television is only the most obvious example, but reality itself has become all but impossible to determine without a major effort. Most people are shocked and in denial when informed that most of what they “believe” is not true.

And that’s the root of the problem. Many people confuse “know” with “believe.” That’s all the Buddha asked; how do you know what you know?” and “Think about what you’re thinking about.” Social media encourages neither; in fact, SM is all about acting on impulse; responding to stimulus; like, dislike, take a selfie, buy something. No deep thinking required, and certainly no research. Not by typing with your thumbs on that tiny screen…..

The End Of The Anti-War Movement? | Global Research - Centre for Research on Globalization | AltaCali: Original Content from Joseph Thomas \ BlackHorseMedia | Scoop.it

I have to wonder what’s up when only about 100 people turn out to meet and greet the President of The United States at an alleged anti-war rally in downtown San Francisco. There was at least five days advance notice, and Vice President Biden was in town earlier in the week, so it’s not like it was a surprise visit. No, in fact it was a $25,000 per plate (no seconds) fundraiser at the W Hotel in San Francisco. The plethora of stop-the-war, environmental, and workers rights organizations that have sprung up over the last few decades don’t seem to see the connection between their organizations mission statement, and other issues that are related to their cause. In most cases these issues are joined at the hip.
