11 Ways to Make Learning Easier | Social Learning | #ModernLEARNing #SocialMedia #PLN #PKM | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it

Learning doesn't have to be a "loner" experience.

Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky suggested that knowledge is constructed through our interactions with others.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Learning) leverage our inherent social needs by bringing people together to learn the same material in a virtual group. Students can express what they're feeling and experiencing with others in a shared space, making the learning journey more enjoyable and less daunting.

As people gain confidence, they often enjoy friendly competition with fellow learners to push themselves to compete exercises and assignments. Recognition is part of our need for building self-esteem—and some courses have gamification built in to reward student accomplishments and community helpfulness.

This is an interesting intro to social constructionism as it applies to eLearning.  I hope the MOOCs do what they suggest and are not just an attempt to throw jargon out there.

Interesting article outlining different ways that crowds and conversations   take place on twitter. It identifies how there are at least six distinctive structures of social media crowds which form depending on:

-the subject being discussed

-the information sources being cited

-the social networks of the people talking about the subject, and

-the leaders of the conversation.

And how each has a different social structure and shape:

-divided

-unified

-fragmented

-clustered, and

-inward and outward hub and spokes.

I don't know about you but Twitter is my favourite social media channel and I love it. There are a lot of Twitter tools out there and I use a lot of them.

The last few years I tried as many Twitter tools and apps I could find. Some of them were just OK, others were great. Many of them I still use today and others have faded.

Still today new ones keep popping up and the market is so saturated with Twitter tools that it's really hard these days to find the good ones that are reliable.

That's why I have decided to put together a fresh list of top Twitter tools. There is something here for everyone. From dashboards to very specific tools for analytics and hashtags....

Using Twitter as a teaching tool can boost engagement and enrich classroom debate and discourse

Using Twitter as a teaching tool can boost engagement and enrich classroom debate and discourse | Organización y Futuro | Scoop.it
Social media offers great opportunities for teaching. Wasim Ahmed and Sergej Lugovic have reviewed the literature on the use of Twitter in the classroom and have noted its benefits to both students and teachers. Not only can it increase participation and engagement, particularly among more introverted students, but it can also be used to bring new, popular resources into the classroom and improve student-teacher relationships.

As Albert Einstein once put it, “it is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge”. In our recent conference paper we set out to investigate how Twitter had been used in the classroom, and whether it could foster creative expression and knowledge. We wanted to study this topic as we have found from our own teaching that in the correct context Twitter can benefit both students and teachers in a higher education setting.

When students use Twitter within the classroom they are not passive receivers of information. Instead they can become active participants and shape their own learning. Gonzalez and Gadbury-Amyot found that students viewed the use of Twitter positively and considered it helpful for their courses. The use of Twitter increased student engagement, serving as an excellent resource for Q&A sessions. Ricoy and Feliz noted that tweets were often able to direct students to other resources available on the internet, so the use of Twitter can also allow new, relevant resources to be brought into the classroom.

Via Edumorfosis
Yeison Ossa Trejos's curator insight, October 6, 2016 1:14 PM
Eventhough many people consider Twitter as a platform which does not allow users to completely express their thoughts and opinions, some others regard this social network as benefitial even for educational purposes. I personally believe that bringing this tool into the classroom can contribute to enhance students participation and engagement in discussions on a variety of topics. Nowadays, most students have access to social media, this means they are constantly interacting with all kind of social networks and therefore are familiar with their use. If teachers are curious enough to adjust their use to fit their educational needs, both students and teachers may achieve positive outcomes.

I consider that by incorporating teachnological tools into the classroom teachers can help to improve students motivation and engagement inasmuch as the use of technology is seen by learners as an interesting fun way to approach and accomplish learning.

I really like this article because it is very effective at weighing the pros and cons of using twitter in the classroom.  Some of the supplemental links are also very helpful to look at and include content on how to teach with Twitter and how to avoid some of the pitfalls that can result from using Twitter in a classroom setting.   In general, I believe strongly in helping students to develop global competency (as we have discussed in class) and I believe that Twitter is one of the best and most convenient mediums to do this.  While I am slightly apprehensive about how and if it is even possible to use Twitter in an elementary school classroom I definitely see more potential in using it after reading this article.

Twitter (www.Twitter.com) is a great tool for sharing, discovering, and connecting with others who care about the same ideas and information. You can use Twitter right on your phone without downloading any software and even with just one teacher cell phone per class, contributions can be made and modeled anywhere, anytime. Twitter has become such a popular tool because it asks one question, "What's happening?" Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.
