Using iPads to support students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Digital books are transforming the way students of all ages learn today. The interactive elements of digital books enhance the learning experience, making it far more informative and interesting than before. Many teachers today are embracing this new media and producing some high quality student-made eBooks in their classrooms.



One of the most fascinating ways to create an eBook is using a mobile device, particularly, an iPad. StoryKit, Book Writer, and Book Creator are 3 apps my students have used to create some highly interactive, professionally looking eBooks. All three apps are excellent examples of tools that allow students to unleash their creativity and tell their own stories.

Though more than two years into my school’s implementation of project based learning, yesterday, I found myself excited all over again. I was helping a second grade teacher enhance her landforms PBL by using Padlet as part of the KWL process and suddenly realized that this approach to student-centered learning has truly become a part of who we are as a school.

My adventures in combining PBLs and iPads began with a gift of two carts. I had just started taking the PBLU online courses when the head of our independent pre-k through eighth grade school challenged each grade-level team to teach one unit using the PBL approach while finding authentic ways to draw in iPads. As the lower school technology integration person, I immediately went on a quest to find a guinea pig willing to plan and co-teach a PBL unit incorporating iPads. This is the story of that first experience. . .

Last month a teacher asked me on Twitter about using the iPad to aid the teaching of Newspaper reports with Year 6. The following week a teacher at my school asked me the same question. So these past few lessons I have been working with pupils to create a School Newspaper. What I particularly like about using the iPad for this task is pupils can take the photos and quickly add them into the template, meaning they can relate to the subject matter more. A nice touch in the app is the correct date is automatically added so we have been able to work on the reports over a few days without having to keep changing the date.
