THE ONLY THING you know for sure is that you are conscious. All else is inference, however reasonable. There is something in your head that generates experiences: the words you are reading on this page, the snore of a bulldog on a red carpet, the perfume of roses on a desk. Your experience of such a scene is exclusive to you, and your impressions are integrated into one unified field of perception. It is like something to be you reading, hearing a dog, smelling flowers.
You’ve seen the headlines: “Robots Will Destroy Our Jobs—and We’re Not Ready for It.” “You Will Lose Your Job to a Robot—and Sooner Than You Think.” “Robots May Steal as Many as 800 Million Jobs in the Next 13 Years.”
An idea over 4,000 years old may hold the key to the future of refrigeration without electricity. A startup called Evaptainers, based in Somerville, Massachusetts, is designing food-storage containers that cool food using evaporative cooling—the same process that keeps us cool when we sweat.
There is no need to emphasize that the internet is the foundation for technological advancements necessary to build a bridge to the future for cities and their governments. But connectivity isn't yet at its peak in most cities across the U.S., and many still experience huge digital divides that manifest in lost opportunities for cities and residents. In fact, a new report from the National League of Cities (NLC) and the Internet Association (IA) titled "Here They Come: A Look at the Future of Cities in the Internet Age," finds that the internet alone contributes an average of 3.3 percent to city jobs and businesses. Moreover, cities with stronger internet economies are more likely to have a higher median income as well as lower levels of unemployment and poverty

No, “humble narcissism” is not an oxymoron; it’s a combination of qualities that the best leaders and companies have. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant explains why.
Did you notice how Google Search has changed? Or how speech recognition and language translation has got better? I am sure you haven’t missed the personalized recommendations on sites like Amazon and Netflix. That’s machine learning and artificial intelligence at work as it shapes our everyday lives. It’s also an in-demand career that is future proof for now. For experienced programmers, machine learning skills are also not too difficult to learn. It is just another programming challenge that can solve big problems.
Google is planning to adopt a blockchain-like ledger system, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. Google will use the tech, the report states, as a means of differentiating its cloud business from rivals. The company would also supposedly license the ledger system so that other companies could run it on their own servers. Google was the second most active corporate investor in blockchain tech from the 2012 to 2017 period, according to CBInsights, just trailing after the Japan-based SBI Holdings. The company has also been investing and acquiring startups with digital ledger experience, the anonymous source told Bloomberg.

The science of happiness is of increasing interest to psychologists and to society in general. The questions at the heart of this discipline are: what makes us happy, and what sustains this happiness over time?

"THOUSANDS have lived without love; not one without water,” observed W.H. Auden. He omitted to add that, as with love, many people have a strong moral aversion to paying for the life-sustaining liquid. Some feel that water is a right, and should therefore be free. Others lobby governments to subsidise its distribution to favoured groups. All this results in vast and preventable waste."

Broadband internet access is more crucial now than ever before for ranchers and farmers in Northeast Missouri, and finding ways to reach underserved rural areas in the region are top priorities for stakeholders from the local area all the way to Washington, D.C.
Every so often, something will unite individuals in outrage who disagree furiously about virtually everything else. For the moment, that something is Canadian psychologist Steven Pinker’s latest book, Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress.
The potential for conflicts related to large-scale land acquisitions could be cut down significantly if seven key pieces of information are included in every property transaction, land professionals say. The International Land Measurement Standards (ILMS) are the first global benchmark for classifying, defining, measuring and reporting land information with the goal to improve tenure security and enable fair compensation.
Many of us hope to live a long life, which includes being of sound mind and body. While there's lots of education and emphasis on physical health as a way to live longer--maintaining a healthy weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, etc.--not nearly as much is discussed around keeping the brain in good working order long term.

As you may have realized by now, Facebook can’t be trusted with your data, and has been caught out time and time again letting it leak out to places it shouldn’t. If you can’t quite bring yourself to close down your account—maybe there’s a support group or family connections you’d like to keep active—then here’s how to restrict the amount of data Facebook has got on you.
It was a Saturday night last December, and Oleksii Yasinsky was sitting on the couch with his wife and teenage son in the living room of their Kiev apartment. The 40-year-old Ukrainian cybersecurity researcher and his family were an hour into Oliver Stone’s film Snowden when their building abruptly lost power.
